Max looked at her suddenly, remembering something. "Bella, I know the hypnotism must have been hard on you. I wasn't thinking about how long the aftereffects would last. If you're too tired, we can go back."
"I don't like to abuse my power. I come out here and practice often, but just to exercise my mind. I don't want to be a control freak. When I heard about you, Bella, I finally felt there was something good I could do with myself."
He frowned. "Um...a hypnotist? I told you at the castle... Two times, actually, but the first time you were only half conscious."
He shrugged, frowning. "I can't really remember. My parents died when I was eight, and then I was whisked off to live with my aunt and uncle. That was around the time I figured out I was a hypnotist. They have no idea I exist now. As for your other question, word of your illness spread pretty quickly through the village...So I came to help you."
He closed his eyes, enjoying every moment she was with him. He tried to forget his sudden lack of self control.
He gave her a small smile, concern still mingling in his expression. His eyes flickered instinctively to the glowing moon, and he immediately looked away. He avoided making direct eye contact with Bella, afraid his eyes had changed back.
He looked up, hesitantly opening his eyes. He slid his fingers between hers. "You trust me too much," he murmured.
"I'm sorry. I didn't think...I didn't think it was that eas-" He shut his mouth abruptly, realizing he'd been droning slightly. He sat down on the ground, burying his face in his hands. Of course. He'd never needed much control during the full moon, because there was never anyone there to be careful around. The moon left him with so much energy, that it was hard to contain. "Ugh," he murmured, trying to block the silvery light from his vision.
He closed his eyes until he was sure he'd made them gray slates, without a speck of silver. He put his hands firmly on Bella's shoulders. "Come on, Bella." He felt deflated and sad. He'd thought he had more control over himself than that. He'd thought he could finally be himself around someone other than Jink.
He blinked, and forced his eyes back to gray. "Wait... You're kidding, right?" He frowned. "I wasn't even trying..."
Max and Bella came to a clearing surrounded by evergreens, except for one spot where the silvery moon beamed down at them, full and beautiful. Max's eyes were tinted silver in excitement.
