4170 I guess I'm old.

Which rules out "Star Wars" as we all know here that it's Fantasy 😉

4170 Does it mean that I'm old if I don't get it? 🤔

I know what an NFT is (view spoiler) but don't get the connection. 😕

4170 Rivers of London is the obvious one. There is enough source material to keep them going for many Seasons.

Thanks."

We read Temeraire (AKA His Majesty's Dragon) back in December 2013.

It was an alternate pick.

A) I don't need your approval. "

Andrew isn't questioning your right to choose what to read, what he, and I also find strange is that you've read the sequel to "Pandora's Star" without reading "Pandora's Star". That is unusual, particularly when Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained are really one story split into 2 books.

"Judas Unchained" wouldn't make sense without the set-up and character progression that happens in "Pandora's Star"

That's how I would describe "Lower Decks"

I dropped "The Orville" in S2 it was missing some key ingredient that I couldn't quite put my finger on. It was humorous without being overly funny. Ok storylines. Ok acting. It just didn't rise above mediocre.

4170 It was science. You don't get to the Scientific Method without the millennia of science development that preceded it.

They were fighting against the "God(s) did it" mentality that held back science ( and is still holding back science)

Medicine was improved by learning from the mistakes and successes of previous generations.

Maths and Technology is science. The Egyptians were using science to build their pyramids.

Eratosthenes, 2200+ years ago, was using science to calculate the circumference of the Earth, the Earth's tilt and the length of a year to a precision not matched for well over a 1,000 years

"Do you want fries with that"

" No I'm an Aussie and I want f***ing chips with that. Thank you" 😉

Fries = Chips (UK & Oz )
Chips = Crisps (In the UK)
Chips = Chips (in Oz)

Yes we weird Aussies says Chips for both Fries and Chips 😉
4170 It would be fair to say that sci-fi predates written history.

Of the ones we know and have records I would say the Gilgamesh story (already mentioned) is a contender (from 2100 BCE). It is a story that inspired the Noah story from the bible. I know many won't consider stories from the bible as sci-fi, but they are often retellings of earlier stories that do have SFF elements. Very little in the bible is original. The authors plagiarised much older stories. Even the Jesus myth is heavily inspired from Sumerian, Babylonian and Egyptian SFF stories.

Metamorphoses by Ovid (from 8 CE) is often cited as the first true Sci-fi book. But even that is based on many much older stories.

4170 I thought the Justine flying scene was amazing and that whole scene does become important for several storylines further along in both books.

Things that seem unimportant and people who seem like background characters will often become more important to the story later.

I had no problem with the pacing. I enjoyed the multiple POV chapters and the world building. It does all come together. Many characters and storylines will meet and overlap.

I know many of you won't get there, but the second half of Judas Unchained is a "put your seatbelt on and hang on for the ride" action thriller.
4170 The February book pick will be The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo

Veronica chose this book from a suggestion by Seth in Quick Burns. Because we a reading an extra long book in March (Pandora's Star) it was felt that a shorter book this month would give everyone more time to read the March pick.

Because it was so short (and cheap) I decided to buy the sequel as well

Rob is a bit late announcing it. It is past the 24 hour embargo, so it is safe to say we are reading

I was going off the Goodreads page for the book and the page count there.

Kindle length will vary depending on the Font and Font size you choose. Mine is 119 pages.

It should be a quick read. 112 pages.

Magician was, for many of us, a single book.

Only in the US was it split into 2 separate books Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master

Veronica and Tom were, more than likely, not aware that it is really a 2 book story, much more than it is the first Book of a series.
