Ending the month with The Labyrinth Index by Charles Stross, the latest Laundry Files book which arrived on my Kindle two nights ago.
I just looked through my TBR pile (physical and virtual) and didn't get far before I realized that I'm trilogy-challenged. I found six 3rd-in-the-trilogy titles that I need to readNight Shift
Wasteland King
Revenant Gun
The Night Masquerade
The Dinosaur Princess
Siege Line
Odds are I can't finish these six books before I buy some other book. Pre-orders don't count do they? I can't be held responsible for pre-orders I made months ago.
These don't necessarily tick all your boxes, but they might be worth a look. The Garrett Files are a fantasy pastiche of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin mysteries, somewhere between cozy and mean streets. They are a lot of fun to read.https://www.goodreads.com/series/4949...
The first book came out in 1987 and the most recent in 2013.

Ruth wrote: "Something I really liked in this book was the way the mundane horrors of racism were contrasted with the weird and uncanny horrors of the Lovecraftian 'verse, with the weird stuff often coming off as less scary..."Same here. The contrast between real world and Lovecraftian horrors was handled very cleverly. I also like the way the characters confronted the weird, as just another everyday event to deal with, and with little of the emotional hand-wringing and hyperbole, that we see in Lovecraft's books and similar works. A very enjoyable read.

Finished a Dresden Files rewatch on the Roku channel. I hadn't watched since it was first broadcast. I still like Paul Blackthorne and Valerie Cruz as Dresden and Murphy, particularly in the last couple of episodes. I'd forgotten that the pilot, which was based on Storm Front, was recut and reworked into episode 8, which has no Bob, cameos from Mister, Susan and Bianca, and a brief discussion about magic between Dresden and Murphy. It's clear that they broadcast episodes out of order and it's a little confusing to follow. Nevertheless, I still get a kick out of live-action Harry. I hope the new option turns into more Dresden to watch.
The season finale of IRL: Online Life is Real Life features audio presentation of a pair of speculative fiction short stories describing what elections might look like in the future. Apparently I'm still coasting on books read in the distant past1 Donald Hamilton 42
2 Don Pendleton 36
3 Peter David 35
3 Ben Aaronovitch 35
5 John Scalzi 29
5 Arthur W. Upfield 29
7 Aimée Thurlo 26
8 Richard Stark 25
9 Various 24
10 Steve Brewer 23
Ben Aaronovitch is the only fantasy author in my top 10 because I've been reading his comics in addition to novels. John Scalzi is there because I read his serialized books. Most of the rest are suspense and mystery novelists that I read years ago.
John (Nevets) wrote: "Funny enough I recently watched the series for the first time, it was free on the Roku channel (if you have one) for a while, don't know if it is still there or not. "I watched the series when it was first broadcast. This discussion prompted me to watch it again. It's still streaming free on the Roku Channel, which I hadn't checked out yet. The first episode has two commercials, but they're short.
Ian wrote: "What if James Marsters (narrates the books, Spike from Buffy & Angel, Smallville, Torchwood, Runaways) is cast as Dresden?"Marsters is a good actor, but not physically imposing. Dresden is over 2 meters tall in the books.
Edit: A little googling tells me that Harry is 6-9 and Murphy is 5-0. Not a good height differential for tv or film.
