Both of the Supremes are graybeards (or greybeards) in this pic from the family album...

Teenage-me, who read a lot of what we now call classic science fiction (but not this book), probably would have missed the social and political nuances.

Older-than-dirt-me is kind of appalled with all the characters, their actions, and their motivations.

Of the older SF books I've read and reread, this one is the most jarring when looked at with a critical eye.
