Geez I really dropped the ball on this one guys. November was basically a wash for me as I've been recovering from a nasty flu. Trust me it was not pretty. I haven't even cracked the book yet even though I checked it out of the library weeks ago.
In short I just want to apologize.

I feel a little bad that Sinclair's message wasn't interpreted the way he wanted. But hey, he still had an impact on the public, even if they didn't all become Socialists.

I rewatched it recently and found that a young Christian Slater looks eerily like James Marshall from his "Twin Peaks" period. He played James Hurley.

It was suggested as part of out Classics list. No one asked me to remove it from the list so it's been left there.

What about "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair? Because of his book, the US passed the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. This made meat safer to eat; it was no longer diseased or being stuff with sawdust.

The movie is certainly full of enough grit and dirt to be believable for the medieval period.

Eco is most definitely an academic. The foreword was full of works I'd never heard of though I liked the idea that the story was one he'd found.

If the works of literature lost to time still existed, would they have any impact on our daily lives?

Does Sean Connery play Brother William well? How does the abbey measure up to the description?

Have you ever read Eco before? What do you think of the story so far?

You're right Charlene, Bronte doesn't really give any background for Lucy. In fact, we start off with Paulina who seems more central to the story. I was confused about Lucy's family situation. At first I thought her parents were deceased and then I thought perhaps Mrs. Bretton was sponsering her.
What I didn't undertand was why she allowed Mme. Beck to snoop through her things and consequently, make copies of her keys. Totally creepy if you ask me.

Wow September went by fast. I'm sorry this is so late guys this month has been extremely busy. I've extended the deadline on the poll into next month. We have some good selections that I'm really happy about.

Did you like or hate it? Was it satisfactory and did it tie up the story?

What do you think of the book so far?

Is she a reliable narrator or not and why?

How does Lucy stack up against Charlotte's more well-known protagonist? Are they comparable?

It's interesting to see how Hodgson writes Mary and Colin. Their speech is repetitive and the way their brains work in terms of understanding the world around them feels very childlike. I think she's done a good job within the context of the time period she wrote in.
