Have you read any Wilkie Collins before?

All fixed. Sorry about that. I've been so busy lately that I haven't had time to take down our book from last month.

It's time to choose a book for August.
The random number generator gave me:

Brideshead Revisited.
The beginning! And on a side note, Happy Canada Day to my fellow compatriots!

Et In Arcadia Ego

Brideshead Deserted

A Twitch Upon the Thread

The End!

Gene doesn't seem the kind of person to push an issue. It seems like it was hard enough for him to get up the courage to go and see Finney while in his cast. Then, when he tried explaining to him and Finney wouldn't hear it, he just gave up and took the easy way out.

I doubt it.
I liked the book but was expecting more. I felt like I was always being kept on the sidelines. Yes we go into Gene's thoughts but I was expecting more of the school experience to show a contrast to the war.
I did like how Knowles made the war seem like a distant irritation, the mosquito you can hear but not find in the middle of the night.

This month we have some heavy hitters. The Random Number Generator gave me 28, 54, 48 and 51. Click

Also, if anyone's interested in heading next month's discussion I'd greatly appreciate it. Some months I feel like I'm not giving my all for this discussion group and I really do want to help foster discussions about our chosen book. If you're interested then please respond to this post.

I agree about the characterization and how tiny feelings of guilt and jealousy keep creeping into his thoughts. Most of the time though, I kept thinking of the boys as being younger (around 12-14) rather than 16-17.

It's interesting to see how the war affects the boys regardless of the fact that they aren't fighting in it. Even Leper who joins up but doesn't actually go.
I have a feeling Leper was hallucinating from lack of food and sleep. Poor kid.

I can already see this drawing parallels to "Lord of the Flies".
What do you think? Did Gene push Finny? I don't think he did but I do think he wanted him to fall.

I like the ominous introduction mentioning a "violent death". This isn't going to be your typical book.
I believe this book is going to have more in common with "Lord of the Flies" than "Tom Brown". Although I have to say I thoroughly disliked "Flies".
Besides, Gene seems to have this jealous streak running through him about Finney. He keeps passing it off as nothing though.

For discussion of the beginning.
Sorry this is so late guys. I haven't had access to the net in a few days.

For discussion of the middle.

For discussion of the near end.

For discussion of the end.

Well it looks like I'm going to have to break the tie. My pick is "A Separate Peace", having never read the author before.
