So it looks like we're reading Wilkie Collin's "The Woman in White". I hope everyone had a great New Years!

Apologies for the lateness of this. I've been a little caught up with the holidays.
The random number generator has come up with four new selections for the new year.

I've seen the adaptation and liked it but haven't read the book. If you like Gaskell I suggest "Cranford". It's an excellent book and miniseries.

What do you think of them? Who's your favourite?

Is she justified in the decision she makes? Why or why not?

I don't know about you but I've never read Henry James before. How does his style and characterization strike you?

I know last year we had a themed month for the holidays but this year I haven't had time. Hope that's okay.

Finally finished this thing last week. Very disappointing. It only got interesting after the first 200 pages. I won't be reading it ever again.

Why is Quasimodo the main character of this book? Was Hugo trying to communicate some underlying message to his readers?

Notre Dame de Paris plays a huge role in this book. Did Hugo do this on purpose and if so, why?

I keep thinking of Frodo Baggins everytime I read Frollo's name.
What kind of a villain is he? Do his own personal faults get in his way? What do you think of him?

I agree. The stakes felt higher with Crusoe because you see him surviving, goat hat and all.

Alright so our November book is Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". For those of you who've been here since our "Les Mis" discussion, it'll be interesting to see how this book compares. You have until Sunday before we start in on this book.

Yes, but which movie version? Apparently there are at least two movie adaptations and one BBC miniseries. Having taking a look at some, I like Leslie Howard's version though I am biased.

It's time to vote for our next book and the random number generator has given us a good selection.

I'm pretty sure I know who the SP is and I like how the Baroness occasionally drops hints for readers to find. Has anyone else figured out his identity yet?

I agree about the accents. Throughout a whole book they can become tiresome. Usually it's just easier to change sentence structure to imply the accent.
I loved how SP tricked Bibot. I wondered how he was able to stand being a regular next to the guillotine, occasionally being sprayed by blood.

No worries. I'm glad to hear you liked SP!

Compared to the horror that was "The Moonstone", this book is awesome!

Yup, that's right. You can always click on the word "here" in that post and it will take you to the poll. Or you can scroll down to the bottom of the group home page to get to the poll and vote.
Sorry I took so long to get Pimpernel posted. I've just spent the last week moving so hopefully I'll be able to keep to the schedule for the rest of the fall.
