38077 Here is another convenient marriage. I love how in this scene heroine tries to learn something practical about her husband and ends up with something much better...

Her Grace, by the way, is a pregnant pug dog.

Heroine smiled. "If you don't like goose, what do you like?"
Her husband shrugged. "Whatever you see fit to serve will do well enough."
Heroine tried very hard to keep her smile in place. "But I want to know what you like to eat."
"And I have told you that it does not matter."
Her checks were beginning to ache. "Gammon? Beef? Fish?"
"Heroine..."
"Eel?" Her eyes narrowed. "Tripe? Brains?"
"Not brains," he snapped, his voice so low it sounded as if it were scraping gravel.
She beamed. "Not brains! I shall make a note of it."
Hero's sister coughed into her napkin.
Great Aunt Elvira fed Her Grace another scrap as she murmured "I like brains fried in butter."
Hero cleared his throat and took a sip of wine before setting the wineglass down precisely. "I have a fondness for pigeon pie."
"Do you?" Heroine leaned forward eagerly. She felt as excited as if she'd won a prize at a fair. "Í'll be sure and ask Mrs. Crumb to tell the new cook."
He inclined his head, the corner of his mouth tilting up. "Thank you."
She caught a fond smile on his sister's face as her sister-in-law looked between the two of them. Heroine felt the heat rise in her face. "What did you do today, while we worked on the house?"
Hero's gaze slid away as he took a sip of wine--almost as if he were avoiding her question. ""I usually frequent Basham's Coffeehouse."
Great-Aunt Elvira frowned and heroine had an awful premonition--her aunt held quite strong opinions. "Nasty things, coffee houses. Full of scandal sheets, women of low repute, and tobacco."
"As well as coffee, of course," Hero said with an entirely straight face.
"Well, naturally coffee, but--" Great-Aunt Elvira began
"How is Her Grace feeling this evening?" Heroine cut in hastily. From across the table, her husband shot her an ironic look that she chose to ignore. "I notice she seems to be eating well."
"Her Grace spent the entire day abed, panting quite dreadfully. That child overexerted her, chasing Her Grace about." Great Aunt Elvira stabbed her fork meditatively into a carrot. "Babies are adorable, naturally, but so messy. Perhaps if there were a way of containing them, especially around sensitive creatures such as Her Grace..."
"Like a small cage, you mean?" Sister asked innocently.
"Or a tether, set into the ground," Hero said.
Everyone looked at him.
Sister's lips were trembling. "But what about indoors?"
He raised his brows, his expression grave. "Ill-advised, I'm afraid. Best to keep them outside in the fresh air. But if one did bring a baby indoors, I think a hook set into the wall with ties made to fit under the child's arms would suit."
Great-Aunt Elvira's brows had snapped together. She wasn't known for her sense of humor. "Hero!"
He turned to her attentively. "Ma'am?"
"I cannot believe you would suggest tying a child to the wall."
"Oh, no, ma'am" hero said as he poured himself more wine. "You have me entirely wrong."
"Well that's a relief--"
"Ï meant the child should hang on the wall. " He looked kindly at the elderly woman. "Like a picture, as it were."

38077 I've been reading Alyssa Johnson's first series which while not up to the level of her most recent 3 books has still been a lot of fun. Thanks to Janga I've also been reading Margaret Marin's Deborah Knott books.
Apr 23, 2013 12:40PM

38077 About to read the Montlake rereleases of Alissa Johnson.
Are there other books only Montlake has released as Ebooks that I should be looking for?
Apr 22, 2013 06:12AM

38077 I haven't read it but I think I know the author.
38077 If so let me know!

38077 Oh thanks Janga! I will buy the Montlake ones now.

38077 Yeah they have that feel to me too and yet they don't feel awkward the way some trad regencies can.
I really like her books. I hope she keeps writing. Her website doesn't say anything about next books.

38077 I loved this book. She is a fairly new author and so only 3 of her books are available in e book. I can't figure out why her publisher doesn't put her earlier books in e book--there aren't many.
8th April 2013 (9 new)

38077 Yep.
8th April 2013 (9 new)
Apr 07, 2013 07:38PM

38077 I haven't read this but I suspect I know who wrote it
Apr 03, 2013 06:28PM

38077 Just read Ruthie Knox new novella. Wow. Also, in the first person, which is not something I usually like.
Apr 03, 2013 12:46PM

38077 I just finished Darius by Grace Burrowes. It's like a throwback to her first books. On the one hand, the development of the H and H relationship is wonderful and touching, in an emotionally complex situation. (I find this theme of husband seeks out man to impregnate wife a lot easier to imagine if I remember there were no sperm banks back then. )
On the other hand her plot has not 1 but 4 villains all unrelievedly and unbelievably evil acting in at least two separate groups and she forgets to tell us half the plot. Some of the plot she just tells us and doesn't show us. What is up with heros dad? Where does husband's natural son go and why? Why does hero set up a trust for heroines unborn child--his idea or husband's?
With a better editor she could write great books. As it is they are alluring but frustrating.

38077 Like Janga I'm waiting for tomorrow's releases including also the latest by Ruthie Knox, Thea Harrison, Christina brook and Julia Quinn.
I guess I should check out Heather Snow.
Apr 01, 2013 09:21AM

38077 I am pretty sure I know the author. I think its the first of her Chicago books, but I'm not positive...
Mar 29, 2013 11:59AM

38077 Just read the London List. Much lighter than the previous books I had read by Maggie Robinson. About to read the new Carr and Thayne. Can't wait til next week....I think I have 7 books pre-ordered!
Mar 27, 2013 07:07PM

38077 And on a very different romance front, I just entertained my family by reading Courtney Milan's analysis of the Supreme Court argument on California's law banning gay marriage here: http://courtneymilan.tumblr.com/
Anyone who can make a 15 year old laugh hysterically with her summary of a legal argument has my undying admiration. (Of course I'm already addicted to her books.)
Mar 26, 2013 06:56PM

38077 Thanks Janga! I've downloaded samples of all of them.
I finished With This Kiss. I liked it better than the two previous ones in the series where I felt the character development just didn't make sense.
But I wish she had really played out the emotions instead of using lust to convince Grace. She does have them talk but not really enough to persuade me of the HEA.

38077 I noticed Janga was reading the Sebastian St Cyr series, tried one and I'm hooked
