Riverboats work
Abandoned ships do not work

The overall idea is the adventure story or the disaster story.

Looking over your list, I think most of them will work. I am not sure about the ghost ships one.

36119 This year is the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table of Elements.

Read a book written by a single author whose first and last initial match a chemical symbol in order (e.g., Fe). For this task, authors with only a first and last name would be eligible (as listed on the GR page). Not eligible: authors with a listed middle name, hyphenated name, or listed middle initial(s). Include the chemical name in the post.

Please post any comments or questions about task 20.8 in this thread.

36119 In honor of Marie Curie, the only person to receive a Nobel prize in two different science disciplines (physics and chemistry), read a book classified as science or mathematics by any library. The books in the following classifications qualify: Dewey Decimal class 500-599 or Library of Congress class Q. If your source for the classification is not BPL, please provide a link in your post.

If your chosen book is shelved only in a library that doesn't use either the DDC or LOC system, please post in the help thread with a link, and we will consider your choice.

Please post any questions or comments about task 10.9 in this thread.

Please post any questions or discussion about task 10.8 in this thread.
Sep 02, 2019 02:55PM

36119 Read a book by an author whose name contains four of the six accepted English vowels.

Example: Jane Hamilton would work (four unique vowels: a, e, i, o), while Agatha Christie would not (only containing three unique vowels: a, e, i).

Historically, we did not allow books to be chosen more than once as a group read. In recent years, we have seen our membership change and make allowances for books to be recycled. I have allowed duplicates when there has been more than 15 seasons since the last use (almost 4 years). We have been doing this for a long time! And frankly, the duplicates I recall coming up (Crime and Punishment, Tess of D'Ubervilles and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) are all not only classics, but the definition of this group. These are the type of books this group was found to encourage.

I do not have a lot of hard and fast rules. I have asked for different recommendations from several people when they recommend a group read that has been used too recently. And, sometimes, if more than one person suggests a book already on our shelf (one repeat a season is enough.)

So, overall, I do not have a strict rule and yes, sometimes duplicates will be allowed. In a group such as this, I hope if you want to include a book, you would ask anyhow. With so many good books out there, we can't be hurt by a reminder of how good some of the old ones are. :)
