Fifth Business (The Deptford Trilogy #1) (1970) by Robertson Davies (Paperback, 266 pages)
ReviewI picked up the three novels of the Deptford Trilogy at a library sale over a decade ago. I kept them around because they keep showing up on “best of” lists. Fifth Business definitely deserves to be on those lists. The novel is supposedly the handwritten autobiography of a professor of history at a private Canadian boy’s school getting ready to retire. He’s led a very interesting life, and his autobiography is very interesting to read. The first 80-90% of the novel meanders from situation to philosophical musings to situation. The last 10-20% is very eventful. It also satisfyingly ties together all the meandering from the first part of the novel (so that the meandering seems purposeful rather than random). I’m definitely planning to read the second book in the trilogy.

Task 10.10 Group Reads The Inimitable Jeeves (Jeeves #2) (1923) by P.G. Wodehouse (Paperback, 240 pages)
Review:This is a book containing 18 interconnected short stories. The stories are all told by Bertie Wooster, an upper-class British aristocrat. His butler/valet, Mr. Jeeves, gets Bertie (and his friends!) out of scrapes and other uncomfortable situations. The two main vices of Bertie & friends in this volume are gambling and unsuitable romantic relationships. (Later volumes of Jeeves stories adds ‘heavy drinking’ to the list of vices.) The lighthearted stories are all set post-world-war-one, pre-world-war-two, and give a glimpse of life at the top of the British Class Food Chain. I laughed out loud at the end of “The Metropolitan Touch” (big spoiler: (view spoiler)) There is also an overabundance of 1920s slang – words and phrases like: Great Scott!, toodle-oo, pip pip, right-o, I say, “it’s a bit thick”, etc., etc. Overall impression: stories that don’t take itself – or its readers – too seriously.
