I'll pick a recent favorite: Station Eleven. It is "literary" science fiction about life after the collapse of civilization. I liked that it was interested in how average Americans react and cope with their changed circumstances -- so often, post-collapse stories are centered on elite military men or brilliant scientists. Station Eleven won the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Best Novel, and was nominated for several other F/SF awards. Plus, there are significant mentions of Shakespeare!

-- I almost picked Earth Abides, which has a similar theme, but as a 1949 science fiction novel, it may be harder to locate a copy than Station Eleven.

Wikipedia says: The Shadow-Line is a short novel based at sea by Joseph Conrad; it is one of his later works, being written from February to December 1915. It was first published in 1916 as a serial in New York's Metropolitan Magazine (September—October) in the English Review (September 1916-March 1917) and published in book form in 1917 in the UK (March) and America (April).

So I changed original publication date to 1916. It wasn't published at all in 1915; and the first BOOK form was 1917 but the magazines had the book in its entirety in 1916.
