36089 Jaws was scary.....of course, I haven't seen it since I was a kid.

36089 I'm going to have to check it out. Sounds like it might be right up my alley...

...just in case you wondered, my alley is the one with the secret back door that leads into the House of Magic. You never know what will happen there.

36089 I haven't. Sounds like you really love that movie.

36089 Oh, I'm looking forward to that!

36089 Per Ace's suggestion, I am starting a thread for general chatting.
Jun 15, 2011 02:38PM

36089 I'd be interested in clicking on your personal thread. :D

But a general thread for chatting would be a good idea.

36089 Ace, you've already made a thread for yourself under Reader A to G. You can chat about anything there--what you've been reading, what you've been writing, what you've been doing.

But I suppose I could also create a "chat" thread...

36089 I've contacted author Lisa Mangum of the The Hourglass Door to do a Q&A with us. She said that if I compile all the questions and send them to her, she will send the answers back to me.

So if you have any questions, please post them here.

I could almost hear Seth's voice saying "Hugo's awesome" when you said that.

You have good taste. I recently gave a copy of a Calvin and Hobbs book to my daughter (she's about to turn 9), and now I sometimes hear my kids playing Calvin Ball. A rather dangerous sport for inside the house.

Anyway, I think your mom is really cool to reward with a trip like that. I just might copy her example and give my kids some rewards for accomplishing some things this summer.

36089 I liked the present tense perspective in the prologue. It made the experience very poetic and dreamlike, and I thought it was an interesting twist, since the past (500 or so years ago) was in present tense, but starting chapter one was in past tense.

*** SPOILER ***
Later in the book, Abby's 1st person perspective switches from past tense to present tense shortly after Dante takes her to the river. Then it switches back to past tense when she wakes up at home.

36089 For finishing my editing, I sat down to read this book as my reward. The plan was to read it in small pieces throughout the month in order to savor the experience.

But I went to bed at 3 a.m. I have about 100 pages left.

The prologue filled me with questions--What was his crime? Who were the judges? What was this door? I think mystery and tension are the two most important things that keep a reader interested, and the author did an excellent job of providing both.

I've been trying to figure out who the girl was in the prologue. Was she a vision of Abby in the future? But he hadn't stepped through time yet, so he shouldn't be able to have visions or anything yet.

Was she someone else?

36089 Hello, Mastertswore. How very wonderful to have new victims people to talk to!

Do you like to write? What do you like to read? Favorite book? Favorite character?

36089 Have you guys seen the cover for the next book? It looks really awesome.

The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Olympus, #2) by Rick Riordan

36089 People are multifaceted, and we present different faces to different people. It only makes sense that gods would be too.

I'm about a chapter away from finishing, but I have some editing to do tonight.

After the last two battles and Piper's challenge of Drew, I have to say I'd love to be a daughter of Aphrodite if I could be like Piper.

Kate, I finally got to this scene, and I liked how Riordan played out Aphrodite. She's a multifaceted character, not the cardboard cutout I remember from the myths.

36089 What would you have chosen if you were Kendra?
Jun 05, 2011 05:34PM

36089 I've tried to post a comment here twice already, but goodreads said there was trouble saving it. So I'm trying again.

We went on a trip this weekend (halfway across the state for a graduation party), and so we picked up Rise of the Evening Star (sequel to Fablehaven) as an audiobook.

I have to say that I'm enjoying the second book even better than the first. Knowing the characters makes all the difference.

My favorite part was Kendra's dilemma at the beginning of the book: go to the movies with a goblin-like creature or leave her friends alone with a monster.

36089 I ordered the book on Amazon. It will be here Monday or Tuesday. I can't wait! This sounds like a great book.
