35559 Lol! Absolutely. Has anybody read The Blade Itself (The First Law, #1) by Joe Abercrombie ? Apparently, this book is supposed to be a wannabe of that one. Both are dark fantasy.

Can't believe I'm reading another jumping timeline!"

LOL! Locke Lamora seems tame to Jorg. Except for (view spoiler) he seemed like a mischievous boy, you know?
35559 I'm at chapter 8 or so. I have to wait and see about the MC. I agree with Kristin. (view spoiler)
35559 I'm feeling much better, Kristin. I had lots of reading time yesterday so I managed to get my reading done (and also because I was behind for another BR)

I finished the book early today and I have to say, I'm very disappointed. I had high expectations (especially the romance) but I sort of feel let down.

My problems basically:
- Romance: It was basically insta-love combined with a marriage of convenience. I don't like insta-love - I just can't get behind it but I love marriage of convenience trope. While I liked the beginning, the whole not-communicating thing just threw me off. The device served only to annoy me instead of building tension.

- World: I'm usually the sort where I just go along with the story but I need some handle on the world (even if there are inconsistencies). I was really looking forward to Historical PNR so I felt that I was short-changed on both. There was no explanation on Miranda's powers.. nor if there are any other similar people there. The only background we got was on Archer but not enough IMO. The time period could have been anytime.

I know I'm probably nitpicking but they were so glaring (to me) that I couldn't really enjoy. I kept hoping the book would get better but then the ending. I was eye-rolling the whole time. In the end, I just couldn't hop on the ride. A meh book for me - 2 stars.

I'm sorry if I've spoiled it for you. :(
35559 I'm about 58% in and the suspense is killing me. I have no patience. LOL! I just want to make them both sit and talk.

(view spoiler)

Also, the time frame and the genre in this book is difficult to get a handle on. It is supposed to Victorian but to be frank, I don't get the feel. Basically, the world is not yet fully defined (or atleast quarter). Yet, I can't put the book down!

That looks good, Greta. Thanks. It makes tracking easier for us.

35559 Team, I was thinking - last round on, we did some team challenge that was either monthly or weekly. Just to make things more fun. It would run for a month (or any time really) and the person who reads the most for that challenge wins. Possibly the winner gets to set the next challenge.

For example, the simplest challenge could be a book with headless people on cover. You don't have to specifically read a book (though you can) so any books that fit the criteria counts. How does that sound?

35559 Greta, just a note that it is a BR (link also if you please) and if it is a BOM, whether you've done any discussion question. Thanks.

35559 Hope you're feeling better Sanz. I finished The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1) by Scott Lynch yesterday. I loved it too. I'm glad I finally got around to reading it.

I've now started Firelight (Darkest London, #1) by Kristen Callihan which is another BR. Also have three more BR lined up this month. Like I said, I have a problem with buddy requests thread.
35559 I just finished the book too - a little bummed that I couldn't join the discussion right from the start. But once I sort of hit 50%, I couldn't stop :P

The book was really great - there is a lot of buildup for the world and characters. I'm still digesting the book - I think I'll go re-read the last few chapters..
35559 I'm down with a cold so I just started it - at chapter 5 now so a little too early to say anything.
35559 Thanks :)
35559 I have another BR starting 16th. Would you b both mind starting on 18?
35559 I'll start it tomorrow.

35559 Yes to Red Seas Under Red Skies. I'll join when the thread is set up.

Amanda, I'm interested in reading Among Thieves (Tales of the Kin, #1) by Douglas Hulick . I have it on my TBR too. When are you looking at?

I was planning to read Firelight (Darkest London, #1) by Kristen Callihan this month too - mind if I join?"

Of course you can join us Kristin. See you at the thread

35559 I don't think so Nicole but I have to check the spread sheet to be sure. We'll have to wait for Karen to check in.

35559 Karen, I think read as a shelf doesn't show up by default. I can't see it for my books too. Also, river sprites is not a exclusive shelf so it has to be one of the other shelf. I can see them on her read shelf.

I know for some people it took some 2-3 books to click. It's actually a great series.

I wish. That would have been so good. But no, they are in India while we're in Singapore. We're celebrating her first birthday here hence the visit.
