It was a dark and stormy night, pitch black except for a glow that came from a small white kitten. The Tropic of Serpents was renown for the many strange beasts that crawled and slithered through its jungles, but Kassandra knew that this was something new, something yet unrecorded in the thick tomes collecting dust on the shelves of academic libraries back home in Svarland. Into the Dragon's Maw she had climbed, daring jungles rarely explored by any but locals, to the consternation of her brother, the head of the Lilland family. But now it seemed all the criticism she'd endured had paid off: she had discovered one of The Secrets of Solace.
Her professors at The Pennyroyal Academy had lectured on them: beings from the otherworldly realm of Solace who assumed physical forms, recognizable by their wondrous glow. The most infamous Secret had been the Roller Girl, a being from Solace who had taken on the guise of a bionic girl and become a popular carnival attraction before breaking into the castle of the Queen of Svarland and abruptly disappearing in a great brightening of her glow. Her strange actions had aroused great mistrust in Solace and its inhabitants by many of the people of Svarland, who came to believe that there must be a ruler on One Dark Throne in Solace determined to challenge and upset humanity. It did not improve matters that the Queens of Fennbirn, a large neighboring nation, had taken the incident as an opportunity to challenge the security and stability of the Svarland monarchy; tensions were still uneasy despite the many years that had passed.
There had been a few sightings of the strange beings of Solace since -- a shimmering hawk over Lake Ilsa, an urchin boy in the city of Elantris who was thought to be too nimble to ever be caught -- but not many, and as far as Kassandra knew, this was the first outside of Svarland. The Last Wish she had made upon boarding the ship to the Tropic was for this expedition to prove worth at least everything she had endured to organize it, and here it was, her wish fulfilled in kitten form. The little creature's every strand of fur glistened like sunlight on White Sand.

The local barracks are getting a bit stuffy for your sensitive knightly tastes and you're looking to expand into something more cushy that can house your collection of miniature poodle figurines.
Steps to build house:
1) Clear Spot - Read a book set in the plains. (Any plains.)
2) Make Foundation - Read a book about someone getting an education to build their foundation.
3) Gather Wood - Read a book mainly set out in the woods.
4)
5)
6) Create Walls - Read a book where someone is closed off from the world either mentally or physically.
7) Add a Door - Read a book where someone moves houses.
8) Add Windows - Read a book with Glass, Window, Clear or See in the title.

Choose one of the two available houses to add to your possessions.
You get 2 experience for 4 steps completed, another 2 when 7 steps are completed and another 3 when all 10 are completed. Houses give you an excellent place to store things.
~~~A book with something pointy on the cover (knife, nail, stiletto, etc.):
A book where someone is framed for a crime:
Queens of Fennbirn by Kendare Blake
A book with flowers on the cover:
The local theatre offers an open practice session to allow Novelarians the chance to see free performances and the actors the chance to practice in front of a live audience. You saunter in to get out of the sweltering heat outside and start to eat your giant turkey leg and side of tomato. Lady Rachel is up on the stage facing a grubby little trained pet goblin when she trips over her skirt and falls backwards. The director yells at her, "You're supposed to kill the goblin! Not the other way around!" Both Lady Rachel and the goblin stare at the director. Seeing the opportunity to help, you jump up (spilling your turkey leg and tomato onto the floor) and announce that you know how to make a great goblin sword that can easily pretend to smite a pet goblin. Running out of the room you go and search for the materials.
Gather 3 goblin bones then read a book with a grey cover to gather the metal then forge the metal and goblin bones together with a book that has fire (exact word, though may be part of a larger word) in the title or series. The director will gladly pay you 10 gold for setting the show back on track.
One Shield to rule them all, One Shield to find them,
One Shield to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Broken Spines where the Shadows lie.
A shield has been recovered from the depths of the Great Novel Forest. It is rusted and grimy but radiates a great power. The local blacksmith speaks of a legend of 5 Gems of Power that when inserted into a powerful shield will grand the user many boons.
He then offers his services (up to 25% off and more!) to polish up the shield you found in hopes that it may at least make a good pastry plate.
The blacksmith needs some steel wool (a grey covered book) to polish the shield and smooth oil (a smooth book) to make it shine.
Then you must find the 5 Gems of Power and insert them into your shield: White, Purple, Blue, Red, and Green.
Reward: One Shield - Negates one attack point from physical enemy attacks.
The Gems must be activated to achieve their full power.
A scrawny little bird hops along the pathway. Hop, hop. It looks ridiculous. Almost all of it's feathers are gone, it's tiny and hungry looking.
You look back to your lunch and sigh. This bird needs your last bit of sandwich way more than you do. You take the last little bit of bread and toss it out in front of the bird. He looks startled, then grabs the tiny morsel, gobbles it up then flies away.
You look behind and see a beautiful Bird Feather lying behind where the bird was. This gives you an idea.
Befriend the poor bird by feeding him bits of sandwich. Each meal must be at least a week apart from the last.
To feed the bird, read 1 book with food on the cover and 1 book with a bird on the cover.
Feed the bird 3 times to befriend it. (No feathers are obtained until the bird has been befriended.)
Receive 4 Experience and a bird friend. Your befriended bird will come visit every Sunday and leave behind 1 Bird Feather. You may feed him again during the week to receive extra feathers.
