35559 Quest Accepted - The Steelers Gang

Lady Karsyn runs into the tavern! Her hair is amok, her dress is amok, her shoes are amok, she is just generally amok. You inquire as to the state of her amokness.

"I've just been robbed by the Steelers Gang! I've always admired them from afar. They're just wonderful to watch work. All precision and stamina. But this is taking things too far!"

You agree that it's much better to watch and hear about thieves than be the subject of such a situation. You decide you should try to help to ensure that Lady Karsyn wants to stay in Novel Kingdom for a longer visit.

Read:
2 books about thieves or where something is stolen to get into their mind
A book about a trap being set to set your plan in place
A book with 300-310 pages to set the timer on the trap and watch it fall into place

Lady Karsyn is so pleased with the return of her valuables that she gives you 10 gold for your help.

One of your antiques has hit gold! It's way more valuable than you thought. Receive 10 gold for your hidden treasure. Unfortunately, the others are more like sandwiches...

35559 Quest Accepted - Lady Cathy versus Rat Stew

After being badgered for months by Lady Tea, Lady Cathy finally decided she would go into The Tavern and try that rat stew. Everyone says it's delicious, but Lady Cathy is a lady and she'd never eat something so disgusting as rat. Actually, it's not her first try. A few months ago she did go to Tavern but when the time came to make an order she asked for ale. Just mentions of rat in stew makes her feel ill.

To help Lady Cathy to brave her disgust of our local delicacy, read:
A book tagged as cooking or food or with food on the cover
A book with recipes to find the perfect one for stew that Lady Cathy will like
A book where the letters R, A, T can be found together (in any order) in the title to make sure there is a rat ready
Something delicious

After making such perfect stew, serve it to Lady Cathy and she'll reward you with 10 gold.

35559 Quest Accepted - Lady Teresa in Tights

Lady Teresa comes into the Tavern very excited. 'Have you heard? We are going to have a real performance in the Theater. Some group is coming to town and they are going to preform for us. Look!' and she pushes torn ad into your hands. You look down and see advertisement for troupe called 'Men in Tights' that are going to preform their version of Robin Hood. Looking at the image below the title you see that all actors are male. 'This should be interesting' you think remembering Robin Hood story. 'I know! And there is a prize! If you can answer the quiz question, you get to meet the actors behind the stage! Don't you think that would be great? But, I can't figure out the answer. I looked everywhere but I can't find what are the actors names.' She looks at you sadly and you decide you'll try to help her.

To figure out actors' names you need to read 2 books written by male authors and two books where author uses only his/hers initials instead of full name. Lady Teresa will pay you 10 gold for backstage pass.

16. Prunella is seeking out a husband to support her, which I can understand since women in that time didn't have many opportunities to support themselves. But in today's society, she might be called a gold digger. Do you think there is anything wrong with a woman seeking out a "man of means" to marry? Would you have liked to experience the courtship of that time, with all their parties and balls? Or are you glad to be living in our modern times?

I guess I'm old-fashioned. My husband supports me so I can take care of the family. I don't think there's anything wrong with a woman seeking a "man of means," because both sides contribute to a marriage. The husband's contribution in that situation might predominantly be, besides love, money and security. A traditional wife's contribution of taking care of the home, keeping the family happy, and raising children is definitely no less valuable.

I do wish we still had all the pageantry of coming out into society and had a more traditional, modest form of courtship! It would have been a lot more fun to have met my husband at a ball, haha.

17. I feel sorry for Zacharias being so alone and hated by his peers. I wish he would take his inheritance and travel the world looking for decent people to live amongst. Why do you think he stays in England even though so many people despise him?

I know, right? :( It makes me sad every time I read another instance of him just turning the other cheek. I think he feels an obligation to his country and mankind as a whole to ensure magic isn't abused, and as Sorcerer Royal he is in a good position to do that. Plus now he has the reformation of the approach to women's magic to lobby for!

18. So the magic was stopped up as a political bargaining chip! Do you think the Government will make Zacharias agree to help them in the future in exchange for their help in getting the magic flowing again?

I don't think that the government will be very helpful at all in getting the Fairy Court to remove the stopper, especially if Edgeworth is any indication. I think Zacharias will have to solve the plight of the lamiae and prevent any more suppression of women's magic in Janda Baik on his own.

19. I was a bit bored with Prunella's society life until that oracle's prediction! Any guesses on what the prediction actually meant?

The first line about her being the Grand Sorceress and her hands being covered in blood seem pretty clear, as does the part about her being the Keeper of the Seven Spirits. I'm guessing that "the Five Boroughs" refers somehow to Fairyland or a location within Fairyland. I'm not sure what is meant by the four points of the realm and her being the Undersecretary of Wonder. I loved how excited she made the sibyl, and to hear that "she will make their wicked Society so cross I am delighted to have seen her"!

20. Prunella is in love with Zacharias! Good, now they need to just get married already! Do you think they will end up happily in love and together by the end of this book?

I agree, they definitely should get married! They're so sweet together, between Prunella's hilarious boldness and Zacharias' impeccable manners, and all the wit they both possess. Unfortunately I don't believe they'll have a romantic relationship by the end of this book, but I'm thinking they will by the end of the series!
35559 Discussion questions Chapters 12-15

11. What a revelation about Prunella’s silver orb and how it activates the eggs. Do you think it is the voice of Prunella’s mother or do you think it is someone else?

Yes, that was awesome! "Who knows blood better than a woman?" I love that whole concept and the conversation with Mak Genggang and the later opening of the eggs were great.

I don't know who else the voice might belong to, so I'm just assuming it's her mother, especially after what Genggang said about family secrets passed through blood magic from mother to daughter.

12. I don’t understand why Prunella and Zacharias aren’t starting to work together. They keep meeting the same prejudices. Is it because Prunella doesn’t trust him? I find her rather ungrateful and disrespectful by the way she is treating him. Zacharias has risked a lot by taking her in. What do you think of all this?

They seem to make a great team when it comes to magic, so I don't agree that they aren't working together. I think they have a very normal amount of mistrust for one another, especially given that they have disagreements about very fundamental things, like Mak Genggang's freedom and the use of magic by women, which Wythe seems uncertain about encouraging, at least until Prunella survives the "birth" of the familiars because she is a woman.

13. Do you think Mak Genggang is right? Does Prunella meet a bad end if she keeps going like this?

I'm sure she'll have a rough time during the climax of the book -- it sort of feels like Cho is setting it up that way -- but I think everything will all work out for Prunella, given her bravery, cleverness, and resourcefulness. I think she'll remain the most powerful sorcerer through to the end of the book, though she might have to compete with Geoffrey Midsomer somehow.

14. The eggs have hatched!!! Do you think one of the familiars is going to be for Zacharias or will she keep all of them for herself?

I think she will keep the first three, and offer one of the unhatched ones to Wythe, but I am not sure if he will accept it. I think Zacharias inherited Leofric as a familiar after Sir Stephen's death. We read about the different ways one can get a familiar while Prunella scours Wythe's study, which felt pretty foreshadowy, and during the fireplace attack at the Blue Boar, he shouts, "Leofric, damn you, remember the bargain!" which sounds to me like it is alluding to the Exchange between a sorcerer and familiar.

15. Now that we are halfway do you have any favorite characters? Are there any characters you absolutely loathe?

I love Prunella! She's funny, clever, and really coming into her own through this adventure.

I really can't stand Edgeworth and Geoffrey Midsomer (as it should be!), though my strong dislike of Midsomer is counterbalanced somewhat by what strong comic relief his wife and her friends are. They cracked me up. :)

Interesting point about not seeing Zacharias perform much magic! I hadn't thought of that. Having not yet finished the book or learned the secret of Sir Stephen's death, I'm wondering if he feels he has a good reason because of what happened to Sir Stephen or simply because of England's dwindling magical resources.

Yes, haha, I loved that one, too! Pretty much all of Prunella's lines have cracked me up, as well, as did Mak Genggang's commentary on the normal activities of women when she was young: "I do not know if reading is quite natural for a girl. In my day females kept to enchantery and agriculture, trading at market and tending to the children, and that was enough for us."

35559 Chapters 6 - 11

6. What did you think of Prunella's decision to join the Sorcerer Royal? Was she a little bold? Will that make her a great adventurer or will she be a burden?

I'm very excited about Prunella joining the Sorcerer Royal! I think that she must have some of her mysterious father's penchant for adventurism in her. She has a really interesting and unique balance of innocence due to being so good-natured and worldliness due to hardship. I'm really loving her personality and sense of humor and I think she will make a great adventurer and become quite powerful by the end of the book.

7. The fire scene was kind of scary, but overall I find the book to be rather slow. Are you enjoying it? Does it feel slow to you?

I'm actually finding it to be quite fast! I was just wishing yesterday that it would slow down a bit so I could savor the story a bit more, as I'm beginning to really enjoy it. I guess I'm used to slower fantasy novels that involve a great deal more description and character development. No complaints, though.

8. In chapter 10 Sir Stephen says, "One's anxiety rises in proportion to one's incapacity to do anything about it." I find that my anxiety rises when I don't have enough information about something. If I can't do anything about it, I can resolve myself to that and move on. I'm more anxious if I think I am supposed to do something but don't know how. How about you?

I really loved that line because I feel like I can relate to it perfectly. I don't like being ignorant about things, either, but I do feel significantly more anxiety about what I'm unable to do than what I don't know much about. I'm struggling with it a lot right now having a new baby, since I can see plenty of things around me that I want and need to do (housework... good lord) but which I can't get to and handle with baby in tow. I'm really good at worrying about things I can't do anything about, haha -- but it's fun to problem-solve and figure out how you can expand your sphere of responsibility enough to be able to conquer those things. :)

9. What do you think is inside Prunella's eggs?

Oh, I just assumed them to be familiars, like Prunella surmised! If they are, and they all choose to serve her (if that's how it works? The part about magicians stealing familiars from Fairy confused me a bit), she's probably going to wind up being the most powerful magician in England! Even if she uses them as leverage against other sorcerers, they're still going to provide her with a great deal of power.

10. What did you think about Prunella's treatment at the inn? There are lots of biases and prejudices in this book. I hope they are there for the author to use for growth and change in the culture and the characters, otherwise I am going to be very annoyed!

Omg, I was outraged! I wish Prunella had shown Mrs. Lale what-for, but I can't blame her for her reaction; I would have found it laughably absurd but still just wound up blushing crimson, too. I don't really understand why the Lales treated her so despicably despite that she was accompanied by a matronly chaperone, even if Crawley is just a pile of linens. I didn't realize that mixed-race and darker individuals were sexualized so much at the time (assuming that part is historically accurate), and I really can't wrap my mind around why that would be, and why the Lales would just assume a person with a darker hue than them would have more of a predilection towards wantonness. It's crazy! Makes me feel lucky I live in 2016! I've got a dusky complexion due to mixed heritage and I don't feel I've ever been treated that way.
