Hm, Ilona Andrews comes to mind. Have you read her Kate Daniels series? The Innkeeper is also pretty good.

Yeah, longer books would really help for this particular quest, but I'm doing other challenges, with a time constraint, and the longer books would hinder me there. That's the hiccup of too many challenges at the same time. What I like about this one is that I can read whatever I want

Guess I'll keep reading the shorter books for now, then
