I want to play using the stack of books I've acquired this year, because a New Years Resolution of reading what I bring home has been shaky.

Speaking of which, Jex, how are you liking Seraphina? I read that from an award list a while back and liked it.

Dragon in Exile by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller
Finished: 7/3/17
Rating: 3 stars (fun but not exceptional)
BOM: Nope
Pages: 404

I haven't been this confused since the time my son started reading a book I had finished, so goodreads took it away from me and marked it currently-reading again. Sometimes kindle integration with goodreads is not a good thing!

Me!
I have to say, Lo is an unpleasant character. She drinks too much, making her unreliable, she seems self-centered and rather dim, and I wish the book wasn't in 1st person because I don't like spending so much time with her. Maybe she's just in a mess because of the attack, so if she sobers up a bit she could let a more competent person shine through... I hope!
Also, the author seems to be forcing things through -- the mascara borrowing seems odd (who knocks on a stranger's room first before calling the swanky concierge?). She's being coy about the pills, and about any other reason Lo has for being paranoid. It makes it harder to care about the book.

Hmm. Maybe we should get Audrey Jane on this.
When I look at your Tower Shelf, I see the "Date Finished" as "Not Set" for that book; all the other books have dates in that column. What is odd is that if I "view" the entry and see your progress with the book, it does say that you finished reading it on June 4.
Maybe you marked it finished as an update but then it somehow lost the date before it saved the record? It looks like goodreads copies the updated finish date into the "Date Read" spot but it isn't saved there immediately, so they could have a glitch and misplace it. Which might mean that if you look up the book individually it will show finished, but if you look at it as part of a shelf you see the missing date.
The Tower script is not picking it up somehow.
Sorry to keep circling this -- I feel like as Captain I should make sure you get credit for your books :-)

Never. I'm in it for my Tower Team, and because the library had it available. I'm starting to think I'm too wimpy for these BOM's though. Suspense is hard!
2. I have the impression that Lo suffered panic attacks and slight claustrophobia even before the break-in. Do you think there's much more to her past than we've been told so far?
She definitely drinks a lot, so something is up with her. I don't think we know anything about her past really. The drinking put me off a bit; I don't like dumb protagonists and even if she isn't naturally dumb if she spends a lot of time sozzled it's an excuse to let her make bad decisions.
3. Theories on the break-in? Does a burglar wear latex gloves and lock the occupant of the house in their bedroom while ransacking the place? How would he know she didn't have a phone in her room? Seems there's more going on here than a simple burglary
I was guessing it had something to do with her trip on the boat (that's why they stole her phone and stuff) but only because this is a book. I don't expect most people to have a land line anymore so that didn't seem unusual; didn't he already have her bag so he knew the phone was in it?
4. I can't quite imagine the boat. She said it isn't much bigger than a yacht and yet the descriptions make it sound quite large. Your thoughts?
The last yacht I read about was ginormous (it belonged to a Russian zillionaire in a Peter Mayle book) so it seemed reasonable to me.
5. Ok stupid question, but would you borrow mascara from someone?! (What a way to get an eye infection!) And also on this very expensive ship full of rich people the lady gives her Maybelline mascara which is a realtively cheap brand. A clue she doesn't belong there perhaps?
I don't wear mascara so this didn't occur to me except that no wonder the neighbor doesn't want it back. The way to "borrow" mascara is to get an unused one. Wouldn't you try the stewards first? And I think about half the people are the press, so it seems reasonable that the working people would help each other out, except that why did she think it would be a woman in that room?
6. Have you ever been so overly tired but not able to sleep? Do you think Lo is paranoid due to her lack of sleep and anxiety or is there someone watching her?
Yes and yes! I hate being so tired I can't sleep, and I think that Lo is exhausted and not thinking clearly but she won't really recognize what is going on.
7. Do you like the writing style? Is it an effective way to build suspense by using the emails to give us a glimpse in the future before going back to present day?
I don't like that part too much, but maybe it will pay off later.

Hi Claire! Did you see my note about In the Beginning Was the Sea not having a "date read" marked? I know you finished it ages ago.

The Circle came in too late to be a BOM for me, and my head keeps mixing up the main character with Beck from You so when that happens I put it down.
Dragon in Exile is a fun SF series book, but in hard back so I only read while I'm at home in a comfy chair.
The Ghost Bride is for a book club but it's feeling pretty dry so I keep putting it down.
I'm listening to The Inquisitor's Tale: Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog but with the kids out of school my commuting time has dropped so who knows how long that will take me.

* Claire's In the Beginning Was the Sea --- Goodreads isn't seeing the finish date for that one.
Thanks for pointing out the audio books -- it's helpful!

The Best of Connie Willis: Award-Winning Stories by Connie Willis (duh)
Finished: 6/29/17
Rating: 3 stars
BOM: Nope
Pages: 496

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
BOM: Nope
Read: 6/28/17
Rating: 3 stars (but mostly because my expectations were wrong)
Pages: 337

I think I'll like the author's other books even more because I'll know what I'm getting into. It's like the time I asked my mom if she knew any good movies for a date because we had (finally!) found someone to look after the babies, and she sent us to Sixth Sense. Great movie, but not at all what we were hoping for!

I'm currently reading A Man Called Ove which everyone told me was a light beach read, and I'm finding it really grim -- I was tearing up while reading it. Am I completely missing the point? I'm 1/3 of the way through -- does it get lighter? I mean, it's a good book, but not at all what I was expecting.

It's all Joe's fault.
