I thought it was a searing indictment on stranglehold the church had over the poor and voiceless. The abuse inflicted on and advantage taken of Ireland's most needy was shameful. Donoghue didn't pull any punches to soften or sanitise the depravity the church inflicted. I appreciate that kind of brutal honesty. And she did the same in The Wonder.
Mine kindle is like $50. It isn't great in direct sunlight but otherwise brilliant. It's a tablet but i only us it for reading/audible and it's perfect for that. It's not waterproof, so no reading in a swimming pool. I only have 8 font choices and four background colours but I've never changed either, so i guess 🤷. It's not heavy or an awkward size. The battery definitely doesn’t last as long as the expensive ones though. Mine needs to be charged once a week.
I won't be finishing spider's bite this round but, like Danielle, will have a head start for the next round.I have a amazon kindle fire 7 (9th gen) and i don't know about temp control but i can make it yellow or blue. I never had it without blue until now. The yellow is weird but very easy on the eyes. Even with brightness controlled the blue is harsh compared to the yellow. So my two cents are if you read your kindle alot then look after your eyes but don't pay too much for it.
If read The True Tale of the Monster Billy Dean and Dead as A Doornail today. I have moved Spider's Bite to the next round as I don't think I will have it finished by tomorrow night. I'm still going to try, so it might sneak back in to round 3. I'll let you know the liklihood of me finishing it on time a couple hours before the deadline.
I've read exactly one book from all nominated. I thought I'd read a fair amount of 2021 books, but guess none worthy enough to be nominated. My one book was Klara and the Sun, a meh book.
I've crossed Down Under: Travels in a Sunburned Country and Girl, Woman, Other off my list. Down Under was boring. Didn't sell me Australia at all. And Girl Woman Other was underwhelming. It packs a verbal punch but instead of a story I got lessons in wokeness. They were a two and three star read, respectively.
On to the next.

Thanks for the challenge.
I'm so happy to finally be done, but also a little sad too.

The Fifth Season trilogy is well lauded too though. So it's good to know that that was rhe same for you.
I'll definitely go into killing moon with an open and positive frame but if doesn’t grab me, then I won't hesitate to dnf. That's one of the benefits of honest reviews and opinions. I don't need to wonder if there's a brilliant payoff at the end.

I've got Killing Moon in my big pile. It will be my first NK Jemsin. I keep putting it off. Three star isn't bad but hopefully I'll like it more.

Awesome your first reading challenge!!! 👏👏👏
Good luck.
I'm still trying to complete my first ever reading challenge. It was here at NRBC, the flowers challenge. Still looking for Kangaroo Paw.
Another two read and both four star reads.
a touching family story reminiscent of Running with Scissors but set in rural England. And
- I liked the movie, but loved the book. We got to know the characters so much better. And I was surprised to learn that the movie makers decided to remove the black folks from the story. Not only was it a black man who introduced Captain Kidd and Johanna, but he regularly rescued Native captives. So a hero and the catalyst for the story, and his son (also Black) is actually the only one who converses with Johanna in Kiowa, are completely deleted in the movie. I also removed a few from my tbr. If they're not available through my library and I'm not willing to spend money on them, they've got to go.
Just finished Storm Cursed. The last three books in this series have just been fantastic. So good. Will update SS now.

A little bit of both. We had a Halloween party but nearly everyone cancelled due to illness. Ah,covid, will it never end? But we still had fivr show up, so it was a wonderrful intimate night. We did build a giant robot, which the kids loved, but took up a good bit of reading time.
The downer was my poor dog. He managed to rip out one of his claws at midnight on sunday. He bled like a stuck pig. It was our third visit to the vet in two weeks. He also has conjunctivitis. A bit or stress and alot of money. 🙄🙄🙄
Like you Cat, I regret nothing. Glad you had a good time too.
I've got two hours left of Still Life, which has a U in it if needed. Or L or R or E. I'll have storm cursed finished by Saturday too. I think that will be it for me. Safly, a book short but real life took over for a bit.
I'm not sure what's happened but my News of the World seems to be merged with someone else. So I've cleared my name and book. Whoever read a book by a Peter with 40 dystopian tags, you will need to input your book and name.
Another three ticked off. 31/50 now. If I can get to 75% I'll be happy. Especially as I have deleted enough to probably make up the difference.
