35559 Discussion Questions - Days 9 & 10 - Chapters 61 to end

18. Kwame sacrifices his life for the Diviners. Do you think it was necessary? Was there another way that the two sides could have chosen to do?

Could have been. I don't know.

19. Zelie gives up hope a few times of getting magic back into their world. Do you think she's a worthy leader of the Maji's? If not, who do you think is worthy of being in charge to the Maji? Why do you think Zelie was chosen?

I think she is. A leader who never has doubts must be blinded by their own hubris. It's good to be realist and be able to see how things can go wrong. Otherwise you just jump into it and it could have horrible consequences.
I don't know why she was chosen specifically. But she's headstrong, she knows the pain of the diviners. She knows what's at stake. But I guess others have these qualities too. The chosen one trope, you know...

20. Zelie's torture by the King and his men seemed to have affect Zelie profoundly. Do you think it made her stronger or weaker after she was rescued? Do you think it influenced how she was and what she did at the island?

Stronger. Traumatized, she might suffer from ptsd, but she'll be stronger from it in the end. It definitely influenced her in some way.

21. Do you think Zelie would have told the King that it was Inan that killed Kaea, if she knew didn't trust him completely and listened to Tzain's warnings of Inan? How do you think it would have changed the ending of the book?

Had she told the King, which I don't think she would have done, the king 'd just have killed his son, who in turn couldn't have saved Zélie and she might have died. So it's fortunate she didn't, really.

22. What do you think of the ending and the King's interactions with his children? What should have happened and would you change anything about it?

I knew his anger would be so great he'd try to kill his children. I've known from the beginning.

23. What was your favourite and least favourite thing about the book? why?

favorite thing: Nailah. I wish I had a Lionaire like that :)
least favorite: Inan trying to destroy magic in the end. I thought after all that happened he'd have understood where his father stood and that bringing magic back is the only thing to do.

24. Will you read the next book and the whole series? Why or why not? This book is going to turn into a movie. Do you see yourself going to watch it when it's out?

yes, I think so. I really liked this book.
Maybe I'll watch the movie too. If they indeed make one;

25. If you could choose, which Maji clan would you be in or which clan do you think you would be in?

I'd like to be a healer, from the Iwosan clan

Discussion Questions 7&8 May Chapters 33-60

11. Zelie wins the sunstone, and becomes "The Immortal" but at what cost? Is this where we start to see a theme of what makes a monster? Does the "greater good" excuse bad deeds?

It's the same question Inan had to deal with from the start. It's a question that is hard to deal with.
I think Zélie should stay away from Blood Magic as much as possible. It seems like a very dangerous business.

12. Inan accidentally kills Kaea. It shows how dangerous magic is if not taught. So what will happen if they do return magic to their world? Will it be chaos?

That's what I fear. Their should be soeone to train and teach them. Giving magic to anybody can be very dangerous indeed.

13. Zelie and Inan become allies, of sorts. Do you think it will last? Do you like the love story?

I kinda like it. But there's still some work to do between them, a lot of unresolved problems. And they also have to deal with their siblings

14. The way they use magic really comes together in this section with the animations, and Inan seems to have quite strong magic. Are these two special or is all magic this powerful? Is that why the King wanted to remove it from the world?

Maybe. I feel Inan is special, because he doesn't have the hair of diviners. Zélie is very powerful, but only with the stone. So maybe she's a normal maji.
I think the king is completely irational when it comes to magic. At this point, I don't care about his motivation. That mind is completely blinded by rage.

15. Zu and Kwame and the new community were an interesting addition. How is it that the King wouldn't know about them?

Does he really not know about them? His soldiers have found them pretty quickly, haven't they?

16. Tzain is so angry and Inan... and therefore Zelie. But seems to have an attraction with Amari. Do you think it is fair that he associates Zelie with what he seens Inan to be, but not Inan's sister?

While I understand his anger, he's a bit of an hypocrit. He was never so suspicious of Amari at the beginning, when they first learned she was the princess. Zélie on the other hand, was very angry at her at the time. Now the situation is reversed and he's viciously angry.

17. Quite the cliffhanger to end on "Father's men are here". Predictions for the end? We know this is a series so do you expect there to be any kind of conclusion?

One thing I know for sure is that Inan will have to face the fact that his father will never accept the maji. And that he'll have to be his father's enemy.
Tzain will also have to deal with his anger or at least put it aside for the battles to come.

ah, you already read them !
haha, I'm just always so determined to read everything in chronological order that I didn't think you could have read it before Harper Connelly. lol.
I'm glad you liked it. I'm looking forward to read it and see how different it is from the tv show. I loved the tv show. Do you know if they are doing a second season?

35559 I've gone through my read books to see if any of them could fit for a class

Mark of an Alpha by Stormy Glenn can be used for Care for Magical creatures, as the cover features shapeshifter cubs

And I'm not sure if that can work but maybe we could use Histoire du Canada Des origines à nos jours by Jean-Michel Lacroix in Care for Magical Creatures for localization, as it's about the history of Canada and features maps. we could also add as an argument that at the very begining of western history of Canada, the country was prised for beavers pelts, i.e. little creatures, so it give us the their location :)
35559 @Silje that's what I like about the book, (view spoiler)

35559 @Lauri you might be interested to know that they are doing a buddy read for Midnight Crossroad (Midnight, Texas, #1) by Charlaine Harris , which technically is a companion series to Harper Connelly, as we follow Manfred. I really want to read it, myself. I liked Manfred enough in Harper Connelly. And I've watched the tv adaptation, which I loved!
I'll try to join, if I have the time.
