35559 I'm so behind I won't be able to catch up. I was busier than I thought I'd be this week. Sorry! I wish I had been able to participate more.
35559 Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 1 – 7

1. Just so you know, I’m listening to the audio book and it is very atmospheric, with eerie music and sound effects popping up unexpectedly; very well done, but quite spooky. Are you all getting that impression from the written book?
It is a bit spooky. I hope it gets more so soon. I like spooky books.

2. I wasn’t expecting the setting to be in the early twentieth century, were you? Do you find you read books set in that era frequently?
It was totally unexpected. I haven't read many set in that era - mine are usually modern day, future, or way in the past.

3. Part one is entitled “Sojourners.” Makes me wonder how long they’ll stay in any one place. Any guesses? Or maybe it relates to Sorenson’s comment, “I appreciate you joining me on this short sojourn.” Comments.
I don't think they're going anywhere. I was very surprised they made it to The Cypress House so soon.

4. Would you want to have abilities like Arlen Wagner? Or any similar ability? Man-oh-man! It would be hard to discover that aptitude in the middle of a war! Comments. Think he’ll eventually be able to communicate with the dead?
Nope. That would freak me out. I would totally have a break with reality. I don't know if he can speak to them. Or even see them - unless I missed something *which is very likely*, he only sees that someone will die, not their ghosts.

5. If you were on a train or other community transportation, and someone gave a warning like Arlen’s, would you continue traveling, or get off?
It depends. If they looked like a crazy person, I'd probably ignore them. If they looked sane but freaked out, I might go.

6. I sure hope we find out what happed to the passengers! Also, do you think the train was in danger because of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Veterans Work Program, or maybe the highway bridge in the Keys?
Me too! Maybe the train derailed from the rain or something. No idea at the moment.

7. Do you like young Paul Brickhill? Why do you think he went with Arlen? Do you think his mechanical genius will come in handy at some point in the story?
I do like Paul. I think he stuck with Arlen because he was comfortable with him and he needs Arlen to get in on the bridge job. And yes, I'm sure his skill will come into play - they wouldn't have mentioned it so much if not!

8. Was your impression of Sorenson? Did he really just pick up Arlen and Paul because of the fortune teller, or did he decide to pick them up on the road by some other means? Did he know Arlen had his hand wrapped around a knife in his pocket when he made that comment about not wanting one in his back? Later, why was he sweating? Did he know to have them bring in their suitcases? What was in the black case with the silver latches on the passenger seat of the burnt Auburn? Do you think he is really dead? (I was totally surprised by that!) If so, why didn’t Arlen know his demise was imminent?
I have no idea about Sorenson. He seemed a little shady, but I think he did believe Arlen about seeing what he sees. I want to know what's in the silver case.

9. Why wasn’t Rebecca Cady rattled by what happened to Sorenson? How was she related to him? How – and why – did she know to warn Arlen and Paul to “go on your way”?
So much weirdness in this town. I don't know what to think of Rebecca. I don't like her much so far. I think she wanted Arlen and Paul to leave before they got stuck there.

10. Man-oh-man! What a place to stop the story! Did you read on? If not, how will they get out of jail? By the way, isn’t Tolliver a piece of work? Or is he too much of the cliché ignorant/prejudice sheriff?
Ugh. I hate those type of law enforcement people. I have a feeling he'll get worse.
35559 This is going to be a busy week for me, but I'll try to keep up and participate as much as I can. Looking forward to starting it this afternoon - looks interesting.
35559 Woo level 3! Doubt I'll make it to 300, but it will be fun to try!

35559 @Stefani

#50 - When they first realized Kira was a Partial, Samm was confused about her not being able to Link. No Linking means no pheromones, I think. No pheromones means she can't use herself to cure the babies. I remember someone saying that only the military Partials were given the pheromone capability. Kira is clearly not a military Partial, which just brings up so many more questions.
35559 Questions for Chapters 31 - 36

46. Another shocking plot twist - this time about Kira. I must admit, I had my suspicions that she was more than she seemed. What do you think of this revelation? How do you think her friends will react to the news?
I figured she was. When they were in the Senate hearing, something was said about her being able to 'feel' Samm's feeling of betrayal. I think her friends will be hurt and Marcus will not want to be with her anymore.

47. I was disappointed that Samm chose not to go with Kira and the rest of the group back to East Meadow, though I understand his reasons. What would you have done, if you were Samm? It seems dangerous for him either way. Do you think Samm and Kira will ever see each other again?
It was the right choice. I'm sure they will mee up again - in the next book if not before the end of this one.

48. How do you think Samm will work towards peace between the two species? Do you think the humans will be more likely to consider working with Partials once they see the cure for RM?
I honestly have no idea how Samm will do it. I don't know if the humans would want to work with Partials - I can totally see the Senate wanting to take some Partials prisoner to harvest the pheromones.

49. Were you surprised that Gianna and Owen Tovar turned out to be members of the Voice? Did you expect this of either of them? I found Gianna’s story of why she joined the Voice ironic.
Gianna, no. Tovar, yes.

50. What did you think of the riot’s aftermath? 200 people were killed as a result of Kira and her friends’ actions that day. Do you think they could have found another way to cause a distraction? Do you agree with Kira, that the loss of those lives was worth it, if the cure works?
I think the riot ended up as bad as it did because tensions were already high about the lowering of the pregnancy age. I think it's worth it if the cure works.

51. Do you think Tovar’s plan to get Kira and her friends into the city will work as planned? What problems do you see arising?
I'm not sure. I want it to work. I bet Kira gets captured after curing Madison's baby.

35559 I saw Magic Mike today. It was pretty entertaining - funnier than you'd think. Yay sexy half-naked gyrating men. I've never thought of Channing Tatum as much of an actor or heartthrob, but damn, that man can dance. Also, Joe Manganiello, yes please. *fans self*
35559 Questions for chapters 28 - 30

41) So the Partials have no idea where things are on the island. Did Samm's lack of knowledge set off any warning bells?
I didn't think about that.

42) Partials can't disobey or they are traitors. That is definitely a military type approach to things. Could this come back to bite them later?
Probably. Just because someone is in charge doesn't mean they are right. But they have to follow them anyway.

43) The Trust is the senior command of the Partials which include 8 genrals from advanced templates. What do you make of this?
It's interesting. I wonder why they did not give those 8 expiration dates.

44) So the group got split up in the storm not good. Will the others find Kira?
I don't know. If they do, it will be because the Partials caught them.

45) Talk about a cliffhanger stopping point. Are you surprised Samm lied? What will happen to Kira? Did Samm do what Kira what she did to him? Gah!
I was totally surprised. She will probably be taken back to their base. I think Samm didn't want that to happen.
35559 Lisarenee wrote: "So the woman have to have babies from a certain age on. Just exactly how do these woman get pregnant????? Are we talking artificial insemination or something more sinister?"

Yep. Was 18. Now 16. They can choose how they get pregnant - boyfriend, older man, or artificial insemination. They just can't choose if they want to be pregnant or not.
35559 Questions for Chapters 24 - 27
33. Do you believe that Samm and the Partials want peace? He could be using this as a way to escape by playing on Kira's trust and curiosity. The whole we want peace thing seems too ideal and convinent.
I do think they want peace.

34. Kira found a new form of RM in the blood sample she received from the newborn. Why isn't this new virus affecting the adults? It seems suspicious than an airborne disease would only affect babies when everyone is breathing the same air (and the adults have been exposed to it much longer). Is someone intentionally trying to target newborns?
Maybe the Blobs the adults have act as a sort of immunity to the new virus. Or it is what the virus actually looks like when first attacking.

35. "You have to help me...My heart is stopping...The beats are too erratic."
Okay, I know this is fiction but I don't think anyone would say this while getting electrocuted (or immediately after). They would be too busy screaming their head off or passed out.
Yeah, this was a little cheesy. She totally would have been passed out.

36. Are you surprised that Mkele and Skousen killed Shaylon? Do you think they will attempt to kill Kira after her time with Samm is up? She won't be an "asset" if she fails to find the cure.
I'm not surprised. They seem like the type to kill anyone in the way, including Kira.

37. So many shockers! What did you did more surprising: the revelation that the Partials are dying, that the Senate blew up their own hospital, or Isolde's love child with Hobb (eww!) ?
Ugh, Isolde. How much do you wanna bet that Hobb was a strong advocate of lowering the pregnancy age just so he could bang Isolde? He seems like such a perv.

38. Speaking of Isolde should we be weary of her? She's friends with people who oppose the government but she's carrying the future child of 'Uncle Sam'. She can't possibly coexist peacefully without her choosing a side.
She will choose the government. It's where her baby daddy is.

39. The stupidity of the senate surprises me. They do something evil genius like  setting a bomb and using Samm as a scapegoat but then they let Kira "recuperate" and "take her time". Are they honestly stupid enough to believe that she's not going to do something? The same girl who defied them to find a Partial? How short sighted are they?
I think they are a bunch of idiots. They can't or won't think ahead.

40. I know why the humans would need the Partials (they hold the key to curing RM) but why would the Partials need the humans? I doubt anyone knows how to extend their expiration date. I guess I can say that I'm paranoid about the Partials too.
Maybe they just want to see if they can reproduce with the humans. Totally unsure about them. I just hope we find out by the end of this book - I hate waiting for sequels to find out important stuff.
35559 Questions for Chapters 19 - 23
25. Kira is obviously starting to form a bond with Samm. Do you think she will get in trouble for sympathizing with him? There are cameras watching their every move and no one wants Samm in town. I'm worried that she might get herself labeled as a member of the Voice.
Kira will definitely be in trouble. Samm is already a 'he' not an 'it' to her. Like it or not, she already cares.

26. "The Partials are engineered, she thought. A switch like that...could have been built right into them."
Could it be that the Partials were built intentionally to carry the RM virus with them? That the virus was 'manufactured' and not an accident?
I bet they were engineered to carry viruses like that, but not RM specifically. If used in warfare, they would need a virus that wouldn't spread as easily and acted quickly - killing the host before it could mutate and change contagion vectors.

27. Why would the Voice attack East Meadow for Samm? Were they trying to rescue him? It doesn't seem like they would go through all that trouble to capture and kill him. Is if possible that the Voice may have an alliance with the Partials?
Maybe the Voice is a group of Partials pretending to be humans. I don't think they are though. I'll be glad when we learn more about them.

28. "All we need is three and a half more days, right? Then we destroy it [Samm] and be done." Hobb shook his head. "It's not enough to just destroy it, like we've said before...we need to appear blameless."
What do you think this means for Samm? It seems like they are planning something bigger than death for him but what can be worse than death?
They are probably planning on releasing him and killing him as he's 'invading' Long Island. He'll escape though. With Kira's help, I'm sure.

29. I loved the little tidbit Samm shared about working in the mines and wanting (and failing) to advance with what he was given. It made him seem more human. What did you think of the exchange?
It makes you feel sorry for him. Partials aren't going to be the uber-bad guys they are made out to be.

30. Do you think the pheromones used to communicate will play a part in curing RM?
Not really. I wonder if it will be used to out Partial spies on Long Island.

31. Kira and Marcus's relationship started off very light and jovial. Now, it is transforming. What do you think of their relationship? Of Marcus? Is he trying to control Kira's decisions?
I don't really like Marcus. If Kira stays with him, I can see him become very controlling and maybe even abusive - emotionally, probably.

32. Why would the government lower the pregnancy age now? We knew it was a possibility but wouldn't it be better to wait until they had the results of Kira's experiments? Then they could reveal that they exhausted all their options. Are they stupid, desperate, or trying to provoke citizens?
It almost feels like they lowered it because of the Voice's message - like "Oh yeah? Let's see what you think about this." This could also be their way of outing Voice members - the people who complain the loudest must be Voice. Yay paranoia!
35559 Questions for Chapters 15 - 18.

18) Haru is not impressing me. I'm not sure what to think of him. He was the one who wanted to check out who was in the building and I think he made the right choice to go investigate. They were supposed to find a Partial after all, but some of his actions really bother me. I didn't think killing Scruffy was necessary and why was no one bothered by this?
I'm finding Haru very annoying. Maybe he's Voice?

19) Do you think Nick or Steve (aka Skinny and Scruffy) were in on the Partial takeover? We kept hearing that partials look like anyone else do you think either of them were in on it or do you think people are getting way to paranoid?
Yes - one of them at least. The paranoia is just going to get worse, I think. I wouldn't be surprised if someone comes up with a test - like the Cylon test on Battlestar Galactica. It's been said before, but this book reminds me so much of BSG.

20) Do you think it's wise to take a Partial into the city? They remind me a bit of weebles--weebles wobble but they don't fall down. In the case of Partials it'd go Partials can be blasted but they won't lie down. Those guys are tough buggers. images of The Terminator and Robo Cop came to mind.
Nope. We all know something will happen.

21) Do you think they're making Kira out to be a scape goat by letting her have 5 days with the Partial? That's not much time and why didn't they give her an assistant?
Feels that way to me. They wanted to limit exposure to the Partial, so no assistant.

22) Smoking hot Partials. Could this prove to be a problem for Kira? Could she end up attracted to the Partial?
Most likely.

23) It really bothered me that Marcus didn't volunteer to go with Kira. Could he be a Partial or a member of the Voice who couldn't leave his position to be suspect in anything?
I don't think so. He was just scared.

24) Partials can't reproduce. Does that mean the capability was taken away or it just never existed. Could they reproduce with a human? Could a genetic splice and dice take place? I wish we knew more about Partials. I'm wondering if they're like bionic people? Would there be enough human in them to make a non machine type child? But since they can think for themselves can they really be thought of as machines?
If Jurassic Park ever taught us anything, it's 'life will find a way'.
35559 Questions for Chapters 10 - 14

14. Wistful sigh. I know a lot of people enjoy that the romance in the book is minimal but I love the little scenes with Kira and Marcus. I wish there were more of em'!
I think they are cute, but I do like the lack of romance.

15. I'm actually surprised that so much research went into RM. Are the older citizens letting their past cloud their progress? Was the doctor right or wrong to deny Kira's request?
I think so - the past clouding progress. They're so afraid of the Partials, and you can't really blame them. They need to be realistic though - even without another war, the human race is dying out.

16. Whose resistance to Kira's plan shocked you the most, Marcus's or Madison's?
Marcus. Wasn't that surprised though. He just wants her to live.

17. What are some of the problems you foresee this group having while on their quest to find the Partials?
I totally agree with Mary. There will be some suspicion and accusations. Death too.
