Hi ladies.

I've been around and have noticed that its been quiet. I figured everyone is enjoying the quidditch battle. LOL but I have been adding books to the official sheet and also trying to see where the books may fit in the classes.

Nanci, I'm finishing up with Still Alice and I have to say I'm loving it. I think she is so strong to try so hard to get through all she's going through even though fear is something she is feeling too. I love her :) So that will fit in with the like so we need to see what else we can add to it. Yay!

Yes, I know we can use Lilac Girls just not sure where to place all of them at the moment. LOL but I'm sure some will be placed in the Spells.

Chapter 38-47

29. What did you think about the relationship between Caroline and Paul? Was it a satisfying ending?
It was just ok for me.

30. Which story was the most interesting to you, Caroline, Kasia, Herta? Why?
I didn't really have a favorite but I would say Kasia since she went through a lot and came out a bit stronger in the end.

31. “Lilacs only blossom after a harsh winter.” What did you think about the explanation for the title of the book?
I believe that it made sense for Kasia and maybe a bit for Caroline but not so much for Herta.

32. Many years later Herta wore Halina’s ring. Do you think she cared for Halina more than she would admit? Or do you think Herta was too cold hearted to really care about another person?
I hoped she did care a little for Halina but I don't think she had a cold heart and felt nothing even though she believed in what she did.

33. Did you learn anything about WWII and the years after that you did not know before? If so, what?
I really didn't know that the Polish people struggled long after the war. So horrible and sad.

34. Kasia got closure about her mother’s death. And in the end Kasia did positively identify Herta. Did you like the ending to the book? Would you recommend this book to others?
I was so happy when Kasia identified Herta so she can get that closure she so desperately needed. I would recommend it to people.

CHAPTERS 27-37 - PART 2

Q20. (CH 27 - CAROLINE) AS THE WAR STARTS TO WIND DOWN, CAROLINE LEARNED THAT PAUL WAS STILL ALIVE. WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT HER RUSHING TO FRANCE TO SEE HIM? HOW DO YOU THINK PAUL FEELS ABOUT CAROLINE?
I understand that she was in love with him but I don't think she should have went directly there. She should have found out what was going on with him before jumping into being his nurse made of some sort. He has a wife and whether or not they got along, she should have thought about how she would feel if things were reversed. I'm not sure if Paul really loved her or it was just something at the moment. He seems to believe he does but who knows with all that's happened to him.

Q21. (CH 28 - KASIA) KASIA SEEMS TO BE STRUGGLING MORE THAN ZUZANNA TO BEING BACK IN POLAND. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS?
She's lost so much more than her ability to walk. She feels that her mother's death is her fault and the guilt is eating away at her. When she can come to terms with that maybe she can move foward.

Q22 (CH 29-30 - CAROLINE) HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN CAROLINE CAME BACK TO PAUL'S HOUSE TO MOVE IN? WHAT ABOUT WHAT SHE WAS ASKED TO DO? WOULD YOU DO IT? AND WHY DO YOU THINK SHE ULTIMATELY DECIDED TO HELP?
I couldn't believe that she actually agree to it. I was like she's a better person than me. LOL Especially since she was thought to be dead and then to find out that there was a child, Whoa! But like I said Paul is Reena's husband so of course things went on with them that Caroline didn't see or know about. She didn't even know the woman and she only went on what Paul has told her. Did she really think that Paul was going to actually tell her that he was having sex with his wife!? But the good person that she is I knew she would help because that's what she does, help the orphaned kids. So wouldn't turn her back on any one of them even Paul and Reena's child.

Q23 (CH 31-32-33 - KASIA) WHERE YOU SURPRISED AT WHAT KASIA FOUND WHEN WORKING AT THE HOSPITAL AND HOW THINGS EVOLVED FOR HER? DO YOU THINK SHE'LL FIND HER HAPPINESS?
I wasn't surprised what Kasia found but I think it will help her get past through the hardship that she is going through.

Q24 (CH 34 - HERTA) WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS FOR HERTA? HAVE THEY CHANGED OVER THE COURSE OF THE BOOK?
I was happy to see she got what she deserved.

Q25 (CH36 - CAROLINE) - CAROLINE HAS STAYED IN FRANCE AND IS DOING HER VOLUNTEER WORK IN PARIS. WHY DO YOU THINK SHE WON'T READ ANY OF PAUL'S LETTERS? WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT THE TURN OF EVENTS AT THE END OF CHAPTER 36?
I think she didn't want to open the letters and be sucked into her feelings for Paul again. It was a better for her. Like a quick rip of a band-aid.

Q27 (CH 37 - KASIA - PART 3) 10 YEARS HAVE PASSED. WHY DO YOU THINK KASIA'S RELATIONSHIPS WITH HER FAMILY ARE WHAT THEY ARE? HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT HER AT THIS POINT IN THE STORY?
I was getting a bit annoyed with her. I think if she at least opened up to her family she may feel a bit better. She doesn't see what she's doing to them especially her daughter.

Q28 A LOT OF TIME WAS COVERED IN PART 2 AND THEN INTO PART 3 - DID YOU FORSEE ANY OF THE DEVELOPMENTS? DO YOU THINK WE'LL LEARN WHAT LILACS MEANS TO THE STORY?
I think the meaning for lilacs will come soon but wow there was quite a few surprises. I couldn't believe that Reena left Paul but hey she probably knew that being with someone who didn't love her was a waste and then Paul showing up with his daughter was another surprising moment.

Day 3 Discussion Questions
Chapters 16 - 26

Q15. We hear now of some of the experimental operations carried out on the "rabbits" How do you think the girls are managing to get through it and still help one another?
I think they are being brave and being strong willed is what's getting them through all the pain. I couldn't imagine going through something as horrible as that.

Q16 Caroline, still in New York, but no longer with a job in the French Embassy starts to sell war bonds. How do you feel about her character development?
I believe Caroline is a strong character and love how she is determined to do what is best for others and make others listen.

Q17 I am concerned that we are now over half way through the book, there have been some floral references but as yet we have no idea WHO the Lilac Girls are and WHAT their association is. Do you have any ideas on either the Who or the What?
I think the Lilac Girls are the Kasia and her sister and Caroline becomes a part of them somehow.

Q18 Herta arrives at your front door - knowing what she has been involved in what would you do?
I don't think I would have been nice at all. I would maybe call the police and turn her in. I was hoping for something better from her.

Q19 this is more of a general question. There are a LOT of Historical Fiction books that focus on WWII What is there in this book so far that will make it stand out for you?
How strong these women were. To go through so much and to still move forward from it is unbelievable.
