35559 Ok we have the team covered. As for now, we will consider selections for the next match. No worries ladies ☺

Keli you'll be beater and I'm the seeker.
May 28, 2018 06:58PM

35559 Ok so I can try and do the beater but that still leaves me with no seeker. Hmm, I wonder if maria helena or Shelby would consider being our Quidditich players? 😉😆
May 28, 2018 04:09PM

35559 Well we’re player with other Ravenclaw teams so whatever you ladies are comfortable with. Nanci I can place you as a reserve and have Kelly and Keli take the other spots but it depends on who wants to be a seeker. It’s all in the reading so if you feel like you can’t do it I won’t push.

As for Lisbon time, yes it’s GM

35559 Oh and it starts 11am Lisbon time which is 6am EST for me
May 28, 2018 01:48PM

35559 Ok so we’re in need of a seeker, a beater and a reserve player. I can’t be a seeker due to I’m the captain. LOL But whoever is interested in being in Quidditch are you ok with being either of these positions?

35559 Discussion Questions - Set 2
Chapters 9-15

8. (Chapter 9 - Herta) - Herta arrives at the re-education camp and realizes that they are killing the prisoners. She also meets Fritz again, someone she knew from medical school. She says she’s going to leave because of what they are doing at the camp. Do you think she will leave?
No, I think she'll stay because she would want to do all she can to help her family.

9. (Chapter 10 - Caroline) - Paul returns to Paris, and then Hitler invades Paris. Paul gets a call in to Caroline. Do you think they will ever see each other again? How would you feel if your loved one was in the middle of a war zone?
I think that will be the last time she hears from Paul but she might hear about him from someone else. If I had a loved one in the middle of a war zone, I would be so afraid for them and would probably do whatever I could to get them to safety.

10 (Chapter 11 - Kasia) - Kasia and her family are caught by the SS and sent on a train to a camp. Kasia feels bad and thinks she brought this on herself. Do you think they are arriving at the camp where Herta works? Should Kasia feel guilty about bringing this arrest on everyone?
I feel like she will be there and no I don't think that any of this is her fault. It was probably bound to happen.

11. (Chapter 12 - Caroline) - Caroline takes on a top secret mission in locating all the camps - re-education and extermination. Do you think she might find Paul in one of them?
Hmm, that's a good question. Not sure but it could happen.

12. (Chapter 13 - Kasia) Kasia and her family are taken to the same camp where Herta works. Her math teacher is murdered in front of her and she is assigned to pull her to the pile of dead people. She must be facing such desolation and hunger. Have you ever felt this same sense of isolation, hopelessness and anger? How do you think you would handle it?
I've had family members that have been homeless and it was hard for them to get back on their feet even with help from family but I'm sure it was nothing like what these woman and their families have went through.

13. (Chapter 14 - Herta). Herta and Kasia’s mother Halina are working together now at the clinic. They seem to forming some kind of friendship. How do you think this will play out with Herta being German and Halina being German/Polish?
I think they will help each other survive the war and maybe become friends of sorts.

14. (Chapter 15 - Caroline) Caroline finds out that Paul and Reena are on the list of prisoners in Paris. She continues to support the orphaned children in Paris by selling some of her family silver. She stands up against anti-semitism in the shop. I really like this character’s gumption and willingness to stand up for what’s right. Have you ever been in that situation? If so, what did you have to do?
I also like Caroline's gumption too and I have never been in a situation like this.

35559 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS SET 1
CHAPTERS 1-8

1. LILAC GIRLS IS MARTHA HALL KELLY'S DEBUT NOVEL TELLING THE TALE OF THREE WOMEN CAUGHT UP IN THE HORROR THAT WAS WWII. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TITLE?
Not sure yet. Might come up towards the end of the story.

2. IN THE FIRST THREE CHAPTERS, WE ARE SEPARATELY INTRODUCED TO OUR THREE HEROINES, CAROLINE, KASIA AND HERTA. WHAT ARE YOUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF THE GIRLS AND THE PLACES AND TIMES THEY LIVE IN?
All three heroines having different personalities but I guess that's what makes them good friends. There's the good, the bad and of course the mediator, LOL. I like their differences because that's what makes helpful to each other in a way.

3. WHY DO YOU THINK THE AUTHOR HAS BEGUN THE NOVEL IN THREE DIFFERENT PLACES INSTEAD OF ALTERNATE POINTS OF VIEW WITHIN THE SAME CHAPTER?
I think the author was trying to give us a different feel to each character in their own setting.

4. DO YOU THINK PIETRIK HAS ROMANTIC FEELINGS FOR KASIA AND WHAT DO YOU IMAGINE HAS HAPPENED TO NADIA AND HER MOTHER?
No, I don't think so. I Nadia and her mother are hiding near by.

5. DESPITE HERTA'S POLITICAL BELIEFS DO YOU FEEL ANY SYMPATHY FOR HER IN HER SITUATION WITH HEINZ?
I think Herta is just caught up in all that's happening. She's young and I do feel bad for her with Heinz.

6. PAUL SEEMS TO BE THE EPITOME OF THE SAUVE, URBANE FRENCHMAN. DO YOU SEE ANY FUTURE FOR HIM AND CAROLINE?
No, I think this my just be something that's just at the moment of both being lonely situation.

7 ALREADY I AM FINDING MY EMOTIONS ENGAGED BY THIS NOVEL. SADNESS, ANGER, INDIGNATION AND HORROR FOR WHAT I KNOW IS TO COME. HOW IS THIS BOOK AFFECTING YOU SO FAR?
I do feel sadness for all the characters but need to get into the book more.

35559 TRANSFIGURATION

Transfiguration is magic which changes one object into another. It is possible to change inanimate objects into animate ones and vice versa. Some Transfiguration spells alter a part of something, such as changing a person’s ears from normal into rabbit ears

For this class you'll need to form pairs again. One book represents the initial object, the second the transfigurated one.

It's a cover hunt, and it's up to your imagination. Some examples are:
1) Person to Cat
The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen + Murder Past Due (Cat in the Stacks, #1) by Miranda James

2) Teapot to Tortoise
Death by Darjeeling (A Tea Shop Mystery, #1) by Laura Childs + The Tortoise and the Hare An Aesop Fable by Janet Stevens

3)Water to Wine
Magical Thinking True Stories by Augusten Burroughs + When Love Walked In by Charlie Cochet
