The Things We Wish Were True 3/22

1. Why did you decide to read this book?
There has been a lot of buzz about this book and I was curious. It also was in my February Owlcrate box. It is the BOTM read for several of my groups here.
2. Scarlett and Tella's Father punishes the sister that did nothing wrong. Do you think this is an effective way to keep the sisters from misbehaving?
It is a sadistic way for sure, but not too effective I am afraid.
3. What do you think happened to Scarlett and Tella's Mother?
She probably ran away from that sadistic husband of hers, i only wish she took her daughters from him.
4. Scarlett hopes her arranged marriage will bring a better life for her and her sister. What do you think?
She is desperately hoping for a better life. I don't think it will turn out that way.
5. Tella tells Scarlett, "There's more to life than staying safe.". What do you think Tella means by this?
Scarlett should take more risks?
6. Tella makes it appear as though the sisters have been kidnapped so their Father won't punish them when they get back. Do you think this will work?
No way! That man would never let it go unpunished. He seems to take pleasure out of hurting them.
7. An attraction seems to be developing between Scarlett and Julian. Did this surprise you? Do you like them together?
It didn't surprise me and I like them together. It seems like it is meant to be :)
8. Julian has revealed that he wanted another chance at Caraval. Why do you think he wants another chance at Caraval?
Not sure yet.

12 and 13 Dec.
1) We get to know our main players in these chapters: Ruth (the African-American nurse), Turk (the white supremacist father of Davis) and Kennedy (the white public defender). What are your initial impressions of them?
I love Ruth, I am terrified of Turk and I read the chapters about him in complete horror. I don't know much about Kennedy yet, but she is the least interesting of the main characters so far.
2) Despite his views, do you have empathy or compassion for Turk? Discuss why or why not.
I am just thankful that I was not born into a hateful family and wasn't raised like that. If you are brainwashed into hating others from the moment you are born, how will you know any differently? Having said that I still have a hard time finding compassion for him...it is very hard to read about the violent acts he commits.
3) Discuss your view on Ruth's nurse manager's stance to grant the parents' wish for Ruth not to be allowed to touch their child Davis.
Terrible decision! She should have never been allowed to do that! Complete wimp!
4) Discuss your view and/or understanding of the sibling relationship between Ruth and Adisa.
Their bond as sisters is very strong even though they are two very different people due to their past experiences. Adisa definitely is more realistic than Ruth and Ruth is finding out how right Adisa is about race in America.
5) What are your views on this book coming out at a time when in America race and minority rights are topics of heated discussion and demonstrations following President-elect Trump's election victory?
It could not have come out at a better time. Following the election a lot of these white supremacist groups are out of the closet and even more emboldened. Scarier times are ahead.

9. Were you surprised when Jason1 found his old Daniela at the art gallery and what followed in her apartment? Seems to me that the author is saying that certain currents in Quantum Theory just lead back to one another, like Jason1 and Daniela.
The author does seem to be saying that. I found this part very interesting, makes me think of things I generally don't think about.
10. I was shocked when the man shot Daniela. Why do you think he had to do that?
I am not sure why he had to do that, but I was traumatized. I didn't expect that at all.
11. In Chapter 6, Jason2 starts talking about the multiverses to Daniela. Do you think he's starting to open up to her, or get her ready if/when he says he's from another one of those multiverses?
He is getting her ready for sure and I am glad he was opening up to her.

12 Nov
Chapters ONE - THREE
1. Why did you decide to join this read? Have you read Crouch before?
This book had a lot of good reviews, so I decided to read it and boy am I glad I did. It is my first read by Crouch and I am now a fan.
2. I have a paperback copy of the book which is a really striking red with all the ends of the pages are also red. Do you think there may be a significance to this colour?
I didn't give this much thought, but it matches well with the pace of this novel. It gets your "blood" pumping...
3. So it sounds like the "other" version of Jason (I'll call him Jason2) put on a mask and kidnapped Jason1 and sent him back to wherever Jason2 came from, and now Jason2 will take over Jason1's life. Do you think it is an alternative dimension? Will we get into the idea of multi-verses here with lots of Jason's running around?
4. When Jason1 was kidnapped I did wonder why he didn't just drive that car straight into the bar and crash rather than keep blindly following the GPS directions. Do you think it was realistic that he would've just done as he was told? What would you have done? (or hope you would have done?!)
It thought it was realistic.
5. I love the pacing of this book, I hope it can maintain it as this could be quite the thriller. What do you think? Do we need to ditch the break day? Lol
we should definitely ditch the break day, lol!!!! I forced myself to put it aside because I was afraid I was gonna finish it in one sitting! And since the sentences are so short it makes it easy to fly through the novel.
6. Did you agree with Jason1s attempts at escape when we woke up? Should he have just stayed where he was and tried to learn more? Will the hospital have him comitted or will he be found and taken back to the lab?
I did agree with his attempts to escape, he was in such a fierce panic in the beginning.

Start Date: 11/12/2016 end whenever
Not sure of my level yet, but I will try to find as many as I can! Wish me luck!

yes, I love that they are working together and trusting each other more.
15. How do you feel about August and Kate becoming a couple? Is it even possible?
I don't think it is possible, but i would not have minded if there was more romance between them.
16. Now that we're about 80% through with the book, and we've learned quite a lot about Kate and August's past, who do you like better?
I still like August so much more and find him interesting and intriguing. He has so much anguish in his soul...so sad!
17. Who do you think actually sent the Malachai? Who would wanna spark another war? And why?
I finished the book, so I won't be able answer this one.
18. When Kate called Harker for the first time, and there was worry in his voice, do you think that it was genuine?
I can't trust that man, so it is possible he was not genuine.
19. Do you think that August will go dark again? Or as he finally overcome his hunger for good?
I am afraid he may go dark again.
20. Did the way the book described Kate's injuries and August's stitching her up, as well as all the descriptions of stabbing and violence so far, make you cringe?
No, it was written so well.
21. Do you have any theories as to how this'll all end?
I am finished already, I could not stop reading so I will not answer this one :)
22. Just for fun, can you think up a nursery rhyme for the stages of going dark? (Anger, madness, sorrow, joy.)
Nov 06, 2016 04:06PM

Taking pills was not a good idea at all, but sadly it is all too common.
9. For August people are in parts. He said that they had distinctive sounds. What sound would represent you?
not sure of this one...
10. Were you surprised by Kate's reaction be being told no? Was it just a glorified temper tantrum?
oh yes, she loves to throw tantrums.
11. I was interested in the difference for August when he killed in a way that caused pain instead of using his magic. He was not satisfied when he fed and the cat could sense the "badness" in him. What did you think about that scene?
it was a great scene, I really like August so far...it depicted his inner torment well.
12. Ahhh so Callum says he sent her away for protection. Do you believe him?
I don't believe anything that man says. He is such a creepy character!
13. The element of using music to fight is really cool. I think it is a fun creative twist. And enough of the back story has been revealed that I feel much less frustrated. How are you enjoying the story? Does it remind you of any other stories?
I really love the book so far...
Nov 02, 2016 12:44PM

If I had to pick one I would pick Henry Flynn's method simply because I think Callum Harker seems like a monster himself, sleazy and very cruel.
2. With the three levels of monsters- the Corsai, the Malchai, and the Sunai- do you believe that the Sunai really are "good" monsters who bring justice? Or are they only good because they choose to only feed on bad people?
Sunai definitely seem to be the "better" monsters, at least they don't kill indiscriminately.
3. If a Corsai is "born" by violence being done and a Malchai is "born" by a murder being committed, what level of crime do you think creates a Sunai- something so bad that only three exist?
4. Why do you think Callum Harker keeps Sloan so close? Just because Sloan is "his own Malchai" or another reason?
I am not sure of this one.
5. Do you think Kate will be able to please her father despite her dislike of his way of life? Do you think she should be true to herself instead of trying to please him?
I think it is not possible to please him and she definitely is trying too hard, it is kind of sad but understandable at the same time how desperate she is for his love and approval. She needs to find herself for sure and give up trying to please him.
6. What do you think about August's reluctance to "perform justice"? Do you think he should embrace his identity or continue to fight for better control?
Both. He needs to eventually accept who he is and at the same time try to get control over his instincts.
7. How do you like Kate and August so far? Do you relate to one more than the other?
I think they are both interesting characters, but I like August more. He seems introspective, broody and more likable in general to me.

Oct 25, 2016 06:07AM

I think he is afraid of his gift because he can't control it. He doesn't want anyone to get hurt.
8. Hazel mentions spaghetti, meatballs and peas as a common childhood meal that is comfort food for her. Do you have a meal like that that you associate with comfort from your childhood?
9. Why do you think the prince was awakened and released now?
I am not sure of this yet.
10. I was surprised that Ben has not been to college to study music yet, but the fairies can collect on their seven year agreement. Am I misunderstanding something here? Is the time in Philadelphia the school that Hazel bargained for, or is it college?
It is the school Hazel bargained for.
11. I was surprised by how much Severin knows about the desires of Ben and Hazel. Is that part of his magic? Do you think he knows everyone's desires?
It is part of his magic.
12. When Hazel is thinking about her family she thinks "Normal was a lot more tempting when it was out of reach." Do you agree or disagree?
I agree!
13. Are you enjoying the story so far? Any favorite characters?
I am enjoying it, but I don't have a favorite character yet. I am mostly curious and intrigued by Jack and I want to find out more about the horned prince.
