35559 I'm Alysa from NYC.
This is my 2nd TT (I was Jessi's co-captain last time *I Love You Jessi!*) and I've done Wheelathon and a few other team challenges here.
I've read a few Discworld books but not very many, and have long wanted to read more. I've read 2 of the 3 Discworld BOMs but not recently so I'll most likely do them again.
I've also read some of Pratchett's non-Discworld books, like maybe 4 of them, and love them all.

I have a bit less time for reading and chatting than I would like these days, especially compared to previous years. This is mainly due to big changes at my job, though I'm hopeful that the situation will improve over the next few months (even though it'll go crappy again in the fall for a while -- academic calendar!) so we'll see.

I'm looking forward to TT reading and getting to know all of you! I don't think I've played with anybody here except Jessi and maybe Karen?

Off to eat dinner and start a movie with my daughter. I have promised to show her GREASE for the first time, lol!

35559 Yeah it is TERRIBLE.
35559 No worries...
she says, having not started the book yet. *hides*
After work I'll finish my current read and then get to this one. Three Day Weekend!

35559 Go Team Carrot Ironfoundersson !

Thanks, Mods!

I was actually planning to read Guards! Guards! soon anyway, after recently considering it for something during the Apples to Apples game.
I did read a different Discworld book for that though, so all's well that ends well. :D

Wow, that is super impressive, Laurie!

35559 Congrats, fellow DEARs! Or is it DEARers? Droppers?
I’ll go with DEARs, haha.

Next year 12 April will be a Tuesday...
*attempts to plan day way too far ahead* 🙃

No biggie either way. I just like to look at my pretty coins. :)
There are some challenges like that, where you can do multiple rounds and get a coin each round, and others like this one where the coin rules seem somewhat ambiguous.

The writing was gorgeous, and the worldbuilding was quite impressive. Some issues with plot and weird meandering, like the author became a little too in love with her own book.
Overall I liked it a lot, but it wasn't quite 5 stars.

I'd recommend it but not for a reading sprint (the way I crammed it in for DEAR Day, lol) as I think it would have been better to spread out a bit.

35559 Hey, just thought... Do I get 2 coins because I completed 2 different mini-challenges? Or 3 total because I did the 3+ hours thing twice?

35559 Well I just finished reading A Stranger in Olondria which is very much about The Power of Belief and Stories!
Could fit some other squares too but definitely that one.
Apr 12, 2021 01:37PM

35559 Just finished my Olondria book!
Read intermittently for a few hours and then got in another 3+ hour stretch 1:15-4:30 my time.
So I finished two 3+ hour stretches, and a book published on 12 April.
😃

I may start my next book before DEAR Day is officially over, but definitely won’t finish, so I’m callin’ it.
Apr 12, 2021 07:01AM

35559 I didn’t end up reading much more last night after my 3+ hour stretch because my battery was dying, argh! I stayed up too late anyway, doing something else like a moron. Now I am awake and about to be reading again after I am assured that my daughter is busy 😆

Ooh, I read that a long time ago and have been meaning to pick up the next installment! I liked but didn't totally love it, though, so I haven't been in a rush. Curious to hear what you think!
Apr 11, 2021 08:38PM

35559 I started right on time at my 8pm, read for about 15 min before getting interrupted, then restarted the count at my 8:30pm, and have just now finished a stretch of 3 consecutive hours.
So that's one mini-challenge complete! I'm a little less than 1/2 done with my book.

It is really good! The writing is very impressive. Super vivid and lush without being purple. The story world feels old and lived-in. According to GR, I've encountered Sofia Samatar's work in a couple of short story anthologies in the past, but I would need to go back and refresh my memory as to whether her writing in short form was this good. Because it's reaaalllly good.

I'm taking a break just to post and then I'm going to read some more. I'll check in again in the morning, probably. I've been going to sleep way too late recently, but now I can pretend it was all preparation for going to bed late tonight, lol.
Apr 11, 2021 05:01PM

35559 Here we go!

I'm going to try for 3+ hours right now, so I should be checking in again basically before I pass out in a few hours...

A 700+ page military MM ? I hope it's good!
If it is, I might add it to my TBR too.
Apr 11, 2021 12:44PM

35559 Now that I have finished other books and have a clean slate, I am planning to start with A Stranger in Olondria !

It’s been on my TBR for a long time, and it was published on 12 April 2013 😀

I have some idea of what to read after that, but am trying not to get ahead of myself, heheh.
35559 Lol, thanks! I randomly have the 19th off work, and am hoping to use it to catch up if I’ve fallen behind at that point :)
35559 I'm in, and can also be a back-up for DQs, though I'm saying upfront that I might get a bit off-schedule.

I long for the halcyon days of yore when my job wasn't so obnoxiously stealing my reading & audiobooking time. D:
