35559 Challenge complete!
Message #111

My last book for this was a crappy Kindle Freebie from 2013, but hey! I'm done! :D

35559 It's orange to me too.
But you could use it for Gluttony: historical romance!

35559 I do so fantasize about winning:

◈ Gluttony
Highest number of points by the end of the challenge

◈ Wrath
Highest number of points from mini-challenges

◈ Envy
Highest BOM points participation

But there is also:
◈ Pride
Highest number of books read from your matching Sin
-- Out of reach if we don't read all the Brown, Space Opera, and/or Enraging! books we possibly can, at the expense of all else!

◈ Sloth
Most accurate reading to sign-up goals.
-- Potentially in reach, depending on whether we go for the middle or the high end of our 80-120% sign up totals. Would require very careful planning of reading LOOOOONG books plus mini-challenge and BOMs if we want to do 100% of sign-up goals and still win one of the point-based categories.

And finally:
◈ Lust
Higher number of Mod awarded points
-- But we all know how that might go for me, LOL...

35559 @Megan and Erin:
Are your respective edition links of Zorba and Part-Time Indian correct?
I am trying to get ahead of the game a little bit so I don't have to bother you later :)

35559 ATTENTION PLEASE!

We have some Sticky Posts with General info and BOM info, in case they weren’t up yet the last time someone checked. 🙂

Also the Nomination period for November BOMs is also still open for a couple more days, and the Poll will go up a little after that. Anyone who is inclined to nominate or vote, please do!

And if you have ideas for additional Sticky Posts that would be helpful to you, let us know.

Color cover is worth slightly more than genre. But in the grand scheme of things, the best ways to get points are LONG books, and BOMs. Don’t waste too much time looking for Bingos unless you really want to, just for fun :)
Re overall strategy, I think we’re gonna start out by going for the traditional “highest # of points” (just like everyone else, probably!), and then pivot to a different trophy goal later if it becomes clear that we won’t get to that one.

It’s hilarious to me that the “most books read” trophy might end up going to the team with the most point penalties for reading outside of their sign-up total. Like, they’re not gonna care about point penalties if they decide to just read a thousand short books a month, lol.
ETA: it might be good for us to aim for the higher end of the 80-120% range of number of books we can read with no penalty, but *only insofar as it doesn’t mess up our Read Longer Books strategy* 🙂

35559 @Allison re Swan Song and The Eye of the World:

Votes in Captains group say Yes to Swan Song cover being Red, but there is still a tie for Yes/No on The Eye of the World, so I don’t think it can be used for Blue.

Pretty much, yeah. If a book fits all 3 criteria (2 for Avarice), it’s Sin Bingo and worth slightly more points.
Suggesting the Bingo idea (though I didn’t call it Bingo) was actually the thing that originally got me a penalty, so to speak, but then Cat changed her mind I guess! 🙂

35559 I guess I should have done Sorcery of Thorns for the countdown after all. =P
Sep 24, 2019 01:45PM

35559 I added a book for Countdown Task #3 because I expect to finish my other 2 books tonight & tomorrow morning, respectively, and can read another between tonight and tomorrow night (or by Thurs morning at the latest).

BUT if anyone else can finish another even faster, and cannot do the remaining blank (Task #9), please feel free to replace mine. I will check in again here before I start the book, anyway.

Hence why Caps group is calling it Brown. ;)

35559 Ship of Magic -- BROWN. It's been voted in the Captains group that beige is in the brown family, and this book looks beige/tan for sure.

Swan Song -- No. That is way more orange than red to me.

The Eye of the World -- No, I don't think it's blue enough. Only about 1/3 of the cover is blue, IMO.

I guess we need some tie breakers.

That's why there is the Lava challenge for 2 more weeks... :D

How long are you going to leave up the link to the planning sheet?

I don't see why you can't tag books whenever you want, so long as you're not starting to read them yet.

Well anyone who wants to can start reading it for the BOM in mid-Oct, and even volunteer to write DQs! You just can't *finish* it until someone from another team has finished it.

My plan is to troll the BOM thread until I spot someone from another team who has definitely finished it. Then I'll report back here, and then y'all can finish it too.

Alternately, for whoever doesn't like stopping in the middle of a book and resuming later, you can simply read it after the last day of DQs goes up, when multiple someones on other teams are bound to have finished it.
Participation points can still be claimed up to 1 month after the start of a BOM (so in this case, until mid-Nov).

Congrats! Will you stay and look for a position in that area? Have you already been working in libraries too?

35559 I think Lexi and I are on the same wavelength again. I agree about “from” being different from “born”...

Yes, this. At least that’s what I assumed too. 🙂
Sep 23, 2019 11:19AM

35559 I've come to my senses and realized that I should not use a 450+ page book for the countdown when I don't have to!

I got so excited when I saw that Sorcery of Thorns would fit the "4th of the month" that I didn't think about the length. I'm still going to do that task, but I'll replace the book with one of three other [shorter!] books I found that will work. Haven't decided which book yet.

Then I'll just read Sorcery for SZ3 when there's more time. :)

35559 LOL @Erin, your "grumpy" book has a hilarious title!
