I picked up Dark Places because I enjoyed the mystery of Gone Girl. But Dark Places failed to fulfil my expectations.
There were no unpredictable twists and surprises in plots that leave you shocked for days. No characters so abnormal they leave you struggling to understand them.
Dark Places was (for me) classic mystery about a young woman who investigates the murder of her family. One small unpredictable twist in the story and that's it. This is not a book that would entice me to read more from the same author.
Now I am left wondering which of Dark Places or Gone Girl was a fluke and should I give Gillian Flynn another chance...

Thank you Linda. :)
Here's the link for the lazy ones like me: Steampunk Shelf

It seems it's the older Kindle version had those problems and they fixed it later. I just saw at Amazon people complain in reviews. I will have to check with their support if they somehow can switch me to newer version of the book.

So I will switch my pick to something quicker: Joy Ride tagged one time as owned-not-yet-read.

I am a mood reader so I don't even try to plan my reading in advance. Just read what my mood or challenge demands.

I have finished my Kickass Heroine book just need to review and post :)"
It was tough for me too. At the end I picked some random book by one of my favorite author. Never heard of it before, but hopefully it will not disappoint.

I'll mention it to Steph cause she'll need to edit the card. Her wifi isn't the best at the moment ..."
Thank you Jennifer for noticing and Sandra for notifying Steph. :)

Book: Blade Song by J.C. Daniels
Read: 15. Apr. 2017.
Rating: 4 stars
Spot: Assassins
How it fits: shelved 12 times for assassins
Blade Song was crammed into a huge pile of Kindle freebies I have. Who knows when I would have picked it up if I didn't need a book for a challenge (and I was on vacation so my options were somewhat limited).
For a novel that was a freebie and is self-published, Blade Song was not bad at all. At the beginning I felt like the story wandered around and it took some time until the plot focused. But when I got into characters, the second half of the book was so much fun: action, mystery, kick-ass heroine, witches, shifters and a bit of romance to spice it all up.
While it can never compare to urban fantasy series from big-shot publishers like Kate Daniels or Mercy Thompson, Blade Song was a cute little uf that I will definitely continue reading.
Recommended for fans of lesser-known urban fantasy series like 'Rylee Adamson', 'Blood Destiny', etc.

Book: Etched in Bone by Anne Bishop
Read: 08. Apr. 2017.
Rating: 4 stars
Spot: Series Finished
How it fits: shelved 2 times for series-finished
The Others series was never on a best day fast-paced and Etched in Bone follows that tradition. Honestly, nothing big happens in this book. This is the book where we watch the dust settle after big catastrophes in previous sequels. If you are expecting to be swept of your feet with romance, drama and action, you are looking at the wrong novel.
But if you want one more (and maybe last) chance to hang out with Meg, Simon and other Courtyard residents, then this is it. Steady pace, a bit of character development, some laughs and a hint of HEA.
The Others series will never be one of my all-time favorites, but it was an OK urban fantasy series. I will read any sequels or spin-offs that are published in the future.
