Carole,
Great advice, and some new ideas that I'll try. Thanks. Listing book tour sites is okay as long as it isn't your site. No self promotion here but sharing what works for you is okay.
Jess,
You might also want to check out 2 other threads here that deal with marketing.
BOOK PROMOTION SITES--THE ONES THAT ACTUALLY WORK!
and
BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK
Good luck with your promo efforts.

I post a review for almost every single book I buy and read. However, I am an author who appreciates reviews and knows other authors do too. Readers are more interested in getting into their next book. If it's mine, I'm all for that.

Hi Faith,
Another thread on Goodreads that has a lot of info on marketing is BOOK PROMOTION SITES--THE ONES THAT ACTUALLY WORK!
And if that doesn't help I'm sure Jack and I will try to help answer questions.

Virginia, Lee,
Thanks for sharing. Always worth hearing about other experiences and thoughts.

Aaron, I think you need a Librarian.

Sorry, Donna, I don't know if there is a right answer. Some books start pre-orders months in advance, others only a week or two. The few times I've done pre-orders I didn't see that it made much difference when I opened it up.

I think you need to see the help desk people on this.

Alexi, I hope you did send the message. I think a lot of readers would be thrilled to get a message from the author like that. If you don't get a positive response I'd be surprised.

Hi Alexi,
Here's what I got from official GR people. "In this case, I’d refer them to our Author Guidelines and say that as long as they aren’t messaging multiple people (spam) or trying to influence/get more reviews, then it’s okay to send that message, but just once! The key is for the offer to be authentic and not pushy, and it’ll probably be fine."
I think that answers your question and now I'll be interested to know how your message was received. Good luck.

I'm no expert on any website designs. One thing that comes to mind with the wordpress site is how you have the various paragraphs identified as because there are different types of headings or as a paragraph. I seem to remember that some of those settings put extra space between things that may show up elsewhere. As for the pictures, that's a mystery. You might try asking the librarians.

Alexi, I am not sure on this one. You might try the GR help page. In the meantime I've emailed the one GR person I know and asked your question for an official response. If (when) I get an answer I'll pass it along.

Fred - there are two good discussions going on within GR that address promo sites and methods. One is called "best bang for the buck" the other is something like "Promotion Sites - ones that actually work" you might check them out as there's lots of good info there.

I'm 100% with Jack here. Inclusion is the goal as long as people don't break the rules, I'll welcome everyone.

Well said, Jack. Authors this is your group. So bring on the discussion. Meanwhile I've got to get back to my current project.

Well shows that I don’t know everything. We’ll have to see what this new help section is and how it works.

There is a group called Goodreads Feedback which appears to continue to have GR moderators and where anyone can address things with the GR staff. Also there are the Librarians who can handle a host of issues that authors might need help with. It does not look like GR is abandoning us just turning this group over to us.

My experience with beta readers and with being one is that you will figure out between you what the expectation is and what kind of feedback/editorial exchange will take place. I've done several different swaps depending on the state of my manuscript. There are no rules here. It's a mutually agreed process.

I've always done the print book first so I can read the proof copy. No matter how careful the editing I always find a couple more typos when I have the print book in hand. Until my latest book I used CreateSpace and like some others I had an issue now and again. What I liked with CS was one click and someone called me to discuss and help fix the problem. Now all my print books are with KDP and with my latest effort there when I had troubles getting help was nearly impossible. Only place I've found with worse customer service for Indies is IngramSpark. For the time being I'm staying where I am but I am pretty sure there will be better sources coming.

Thanks. Looking forward to more great discussions.

Hi all, I'm officially registered as J, though most call me either Jim or Drew depending on how you know me. I too get emails when someone posts and am looking forward to working with Jack to make this group even better for the writers. Let us know what you think of the possible name change.
