Tick, tock, tick, tock.
She put her hands over her ears and tilted her head downward, trying to concentrate on something else, anything else. But everything in her life had went up in flames recently. Just sitting there in those few minutes, she realized how much had gone on in the past weeks. 'Everything's happened so fast...'
Tick.
'What's going to happen next?'
Tock.
'Will Catrina lose her job?'
Tick.
'Will I get expelled?'
Tock.
'Will we lose everything we've worked so hard to build?'
Tick.
'How much longer can this go on?!'
Tock.
"Claire," the lady at the front office demanded, waving her finger. "Come in here now."

Claire gazed out the window and thought about home. She knew that Catrina couldn't work her entire life. She'd have to find a job before Catrina dropped out of high school. She sighed. 'An eighth-grader shouldn't have to think about things like this...'
"Hey."
Claire looked up to see a girl dressed in pink wearing a black leather jacket and biker boots. Her hair was curled elegantly and blonde with a large bow tilted on her head. She was the epitome of a rich, bratty girl. So her next words came as no surprise to Claire.
"That's my seat, Dweeb."
Claire sighed. Every middle schooler had to deal with a girl like her, didn't they? "Bugger off, Pantyhose."
The girl looked insulted but quickly recovered. "You don't know who your messing with, Trailer Trash."
Claire could feel her anger rising. 'Don't hit her, don't hit her...' "I said get out of my hair, Fly."
"At least a fly is prettier than that thing you call your face."
Claire ground her teeth together. 'Spoiled brat...' "Just leave, Brat."
She grinned. "Is that the best you can do, Goth Girl?"
Claire couldn't take it anymore. She stood quickly, shocking the girl. "I said LEAVE."
The girl laughed. "What are you gonna do about it? Call your MOMMY?"
Claire bit her tongue. 'Don't let her antagonize you...keep your calm and you'll win this.' "No, but you can go ahead and call yours."
"I don't need to. Besides, my daddy takes care of girls like you all the time." She pulled out her cell phone and began punching numbers. "I can get you thrown in jail right now." She held the phone up to her ear, waiting for an answer.
'If I get thrown in jail, Catrina will kill me...' "Look, what does your dad do?"
The girl grinned. "You don't need to know. Besides, I don't let things like this slide."
'If I give in, she'll just annoy me forever...' Claire curled her hands into fists then grabbed the girl by the shoulder, dragging her outside.
"What are you doing!?" she protested, wiggling underneath Claire's touch. She snapped the phone shut.
"Listen here, why don't you just go back home to your daddy and get home schooled. You're not cut out for middle school."
"I don't think I will. And your definitely going behind bars now." She opened the phone again.
Claire started to panic. 'C-Come on, she can't do anything too bad...right?'
"Daddy? Can you get the police here now?"
Claire bit her lip and debated her choices. But any way she looked at it, the answer was the same. She punched the girl to the ground.
She fell with a scream and a teacher yelled at Claire, grabbing her arm.
"Go to the office! NOW!"
Claire obliged but snook one last look back at the girl and noticed her phone, off. 'She was bluffing?!' She stormed towards the office with a growl.
