I personally love ellipses. I use them often it helps my fingers keep up with my mind. I just forget to go back and fill in all the left out info, so my post sometimes… ok a lot of the time, become disjointed.

I would like to use my time machine to watch historical moments play out. I think it would be interesting to see how accurate our interpretation of the past is. I have a heavy interest in the ancient world (Roman Empire) in particular. Something tells me they were a lot more sophisticated then we think. Looking at the complexity of the machinery they implemented was a shock to me.

As an example I would like to sight trebuchets *(Trebuchets were first made by the Chinese around 40 BC… or was it 40 AD?), the amount of math and the intricate design is impressive. With a solid mathematical understanding a society can accomplish great things. A lot of their lifestyle was probably fashioned of wood or less pure metals and thus we know nothing of them.

I would also like to fast travel into the future just to see if we straighten our shit up… I would advance slowly though, could you imagine how embarrassing it would be to exit the event horizon into a radioactive landscape thus killing yourself. Curiosity killed the cat. DAMN YOU CONN!

I am agnostic myself. I tend to lean away from organized religion period. I can see how someone well learned in science could come to the conclusion of intelligent design. I can also see how that same person could conclude that there are no divine presents at all. I am on the fence with this one because I simply don’t know. I have never felt a divine intervention… wait does the time I lost my virginity count? She was way out of my league!

I don’t think looking at the math of the universe proves the existence of a divine power, or prime manipulator, what have you. I think it is just the natural order of things.

Busy building my "contraption" Now I am back north. I am hoping to be around more, but I have a lot on my plate. With luck I will be able to knock it all out in a couple of days.

Are you implying that my home made "contraption" isn't safe Amelia? I'll have you know I spent a lot of my time perfecting the structure and counterweight of my "contraption, and it works flawlessly.

I would advise against that Charissa... the launch is a pretty violent action, you would probably have many broken bones. that would make easy prey for your lovely polar bears. I don't think you would like them to much when they are gnawing on your femur.

Varmint: I can kinda relate to your "industrial dating" I had a very closed dating/sex circle for years. Ultimately it ended because I ended up getting married to one of them. But the story goes like this.

I splintered off from this cycle and dated Melanae, who was brought into the fold of friends and thus lost me to Ann, who lost me to Lisa, who lost me Laura B. At this time I went into the military and married my wife a couple of years later. The whole thing was like melrose place, everybody was fucking everyone else, somehow we have all remained friends through this whole thing.



I am happy to be out of the dating thing now, it is just too exhausting. I like to relax and one can not do that when one is being run through the ringer by a hoard of overactive women. I know this whole thing probably makes me sound like some ginormous asshole but really I am the victim in this whole thing. I just finished building it yesterday... I just got home from a test fire series, using a 10.lb counter, and a 2 ounce projectile that comes to 170 inch pounds of energy

Amelia... did polar bears master space travel? where are they suppose to go? Yes they are still here in the summer... just up north. It will be about an 10 hour drive. And you can contribute as much or as little as you like. The fire will be going long and hard, lots of good conversation, and building, and hopefully the slinging of really large things.

it is pretty small. 4x6 base 3 tall. the knowledge I glean from this will be used to hurl the van. I am still planning on building a more "reasonable" traditional trebuchet for fun, and to sling "normal" sized projectiles. I also have no idea how much pitch weighs.

I apologize for not being uber articulate. my point being, Wiki "is" a good starting point but needs to be followed up with some real "hands on" time. Because it "is" so easily changed, and because it is a political issue there are many that want to push their sides agenda, despite the real facts. I see all the inaccuracies because I live and work here (for this particular subject). But there is a whole big world out there full of people that have never stepped a foot in Alaska. These would be the same people that believe Alaskans live in complete darkness 6 months out of the year. True it is dark but not total darkness we have a good 2-3 hours of sun in the dead of winter.

It is easy to bend facts, it just bothers me how much is taken as gospel. If it was gospel it should be in a text book... but oh that's right even those are being slanted one way or another. Is there any untainted information out there? I am thinking no. So what is one to do?
Make in educated guess. Start with what you "KNOW" to be true; add in what you "THINK" might be true, Check and see if it fits with what you know. It is kind of like cooking, add a pinch of this, a spoon of that.

My conclusion, this global warming bit is a lot of hype. There is no real evidence that human actions are altering the climate. There is geological evidence of a climate cycle though. The planet wobbles and tilts,thus shifting climates (Look at the Sahara desert it was a lush place a few thousand years ago, and it is still growing today.) The suns surface has a range of temperatures, it is not an oven set to a specific temp (it is an uncontrolled chain reaction after all)

One question I pose to you all is why are the volcanoes ignored when it is such a glowing beacon?

You know, a spokesmen can say just about anything. particularly when they get most of there moneys from private people. So for a couple of spokesmen to claim "a strong scientific consensus" but where is the uproar? In the physics department there is a lot of hub bub about the string theory. it is all you hear about. If there was such a debate going on in the environmental house I would think to hear the same. But one doesn't. Why? Mainly because they are not scientist. they are researchers that don't look at the big picture. they are so close and focused on what they are researching it never occurs to them, that there might be something beyond the scope in which they are sniffing. Also they are so desperate for validation they they often; brush off, claim a tie to an evil oil Barron, as a reason not to listen to an opposing argument. Solar flares... really you don't think the sun can have an effect on earths climate? How could anyone assume to be so stupid as to think the sun might warm things up a bit if it was a little more active then what we are used to.

Volcano's: really you don't think a few hundred active volcano's spewing greenhouse gasses every day, every year for a few thousand years could be the main contributing factor? that couldn't possibly be the reason, nope notta.

I really don't see wiki as a viable information source. yes it can lead you in the right direction, but on any topic that has political strings I find it hard to believe that the info isn't tainted. Which was discussed in another thread a few weeks ago. Where does one find real information in the information age?

UH-13p looks prety sweet. you would need an exposure suit to play with it up here. I ordered a floating arm kit to get an up close viewing of how it works. Once I have the mechanics down I will start building a scaled up model.

Something I have learned this week.... Build the trebuchet around the weight. otherwise you will cause seriouse injury to your rideing lawnmower. This happends when what you build isn't strong enough to support the momentum of the weight.

The polar bears are fine. People need to remember most animals have been living and surviving on this planet for a lot longer then we have, and I am sure they will live long after we are gone (assuming the planet is still here and not consumed by a massive asteroid-comet-solar flare-whathaveyou). The Polar bears evolved into there current form from Grizzlies in less then 500 years, they are resilient beasts. All this crap about them getting stranded on break up ice is also crap. These bears swim for hundreds of miles. Yes they eat sea lions and seals and the ice is melting so they have to alter there diet. I don't see how that relates to them going extinct. They are bears they will eat just about anything. Already there have been Caribou found that fell victim to these massive white beast. Caribou have been left alone in the past not because polar bears don't eat them, but because in nature you follow the easiest route. which was seals and sea lions. well that has shifted now, and they are moving on to other prey. I say again Polar bears will be fine. And besides that their number are growing. I don't know where all this "their going extinct shit is coming from. We house members of the UAF Arctic research team at one of our pump stations and from what I have gleaned from them, the polar bear population is growing, they have tagged more of them in the last 5 years then ever before. So where is this information coming from of the great polar bear kill off? Where are the people writing this crap getting it from?

My guess is the same people that said the pipeline was going to kill off the Caribou because it was interfering with their migration routes... Again complete rubbish. These animals travel 1000's of miles of the most hostile terrain but a pipe is going to bother them? There are vary few places where the biggest of bucks can even touch the pipe with its rack. And yt you still today hear tour guides telling people that the pipeline is driving the caribou extinct. This kind of thing tells me that there are a lot of people that don't know what they are talking about printing shit that gets turned into Gospel....

Paul, I challenge your statement that "Most scientist" believe we are the cause of global warming. I have seen nothing to back that statement up, in fact everything I have come across says just the opposite.

I don’t think I have any weird habits… I am completely normal in every way.
I do have a tendency to go from a nice guy to a complete ass in just under a nano-second. This is usually followed up by a fit of rage and then an immediate conversion back to a nice guy again.

I am compelled to run to the TV when I first wake up, I have to watch the news until they start replying the stories (about 9 ½ minutes) I guess I am always wondering if my dream was a dream or really happened. My dreams usually entail mass carnage or some disaster. After my 9 ½ minutes of news I go and have my first wonderful smoke of the day.

I am an incredibly lazy work-aholic. I work 3 weeks at a time without even batting an eye… well until about day18 then I turn into the toxic avenger. Co-workers run in all directions in attempts to confuse the beast, and escape with their lives. I work at a rate that makes my friends…eh co-workers angry, so I have to slow myself down by fuck’n about on goodreads, drawing up plans for a trebuchet, and the like. I am apathetic about most things in life unless I am paid to care or become obsessed with a project (see retro ballistics thread). Then I turn into an un-stoppable beast that must fiddle and obsess about it till it is just right. (My wife hates this about me).
