280669 The time travel narrative is a mainstay of the science fiction genre. From The Time Machine to Kindred to The Time Traveler's Wife, there's so much that can be done within the subgenre. What are your favorite time travel stories? Why do you like them? Why do you think this is such an enduring narrative trope?

Haha. That is totally allowed! Thanks for sharing, J'aime. Those are good picks!

280669 Thanks for sharing, J! For me, the character I most empathized/sympathized with was Palladin. I latched onto their intense interest in trying to figure out which parts of him/her are "programmed," so to speak, and which parts of them—and if that distinction even matters. I agree with you, though, that the plot was not the most intriguing part of the book. It was really just a chase narrative, but perhaps that relatively simple plot allowed for more experimentation/time spent on other elements?

280669 In Binti, we meet the Meduse, aliens that look like human-sized jellyfish.

"Their domes' flesh thin as fine silk, their long tentacles spilling down to the floor like a series of gigantic ghostly noodles," writes Okorafor. There are also some pretty scary stingers somewhere in there.

Aliens can look pretty uniform in fiction, but Okorafor goes to great lengths to describe the different physical and cultural differences in Binti's many species of aliens.

What are some of your favorite alien designs in fiction?

280669 Den of Geek talked to S.A. Chakraborty about what it was like crafting THE CITY OF BRASS. Here's what he told us...

"It was very much just a private project at first. I had studied history in college and I wanted to go to graduate school, but couldn't. I was working in an unrelated field and I had a newborn daughter and I just wanted to do something with all of the things that I read, that I still read, because I loved this world..."

280669 AUTONOMOUS is the story of a future where human-equivalent robots are a part of society. They are one of the many narrative tools Newitz uses to explore questions of people, property, labor, and freedom under capitalism.

What are some of your favorite examples of stories about human-equivalent robots in books, TV, film, comic books, etc.? Why?

280669 Hi, all!

I interviewed Sam Weber and Nate Taylor, two of the illustrators who worked on The Name of the Wind's 10th Anniversary Edition. (Sam did the book jacket and Nate made the maps.) They talked about their process, working with Pat, and bringing such an intricate fantasy world to life. I also had a chance to ask Sam, a professional, the age old question: Can you judge a book by its cover?

Check it out, if you're interested:

280669 Den of Geek wrote up a story on which fantasy book series would be able to rival Game of Thrones' place as a fantasy TV adaptation. The Kingkiller Chronicle is on the list (of course), along with nine other choices. Do you have other series you want to see make it to the TV screen?

280669 As we all know, The Kingkiller Chronicle trilogy is yet to be completed. This means new readers will need plenty of book suggestions to keep them distracted as they wait for the final installment.

Long-time fans, are there other Kingkiller Chronicle-like fantasy books or series that have helped you pass the time while you wait for the third book?

For new Kingkiller Chronicle readers, did The Name of the Wind remind you of other books or series you've read?
