222868 Frisco... Besides a bicycle, my male cousin and I had mini bikes and 125cc motorcycles as our first modes of transportation too. I used to love dirt bike riding through the woods. Lots of scraped knuckles and twigs in my (then) long hair. I grew up with the boys and was faster and lighter on the bikes than they were. We went way too fast and way too far on those.

BJ, wow that is quite a tale. My Dad made sure that he taught his daughters as well as his son to hunt and fish. I grew up with guns, I respect them and cannot imagine how you felt with a gun pointing at your face. I'm not sure what a jump screen is, but I assume it keeps people from coming over the counter.

TINNGG... Misery loves company, I'm the repair person in our house too. I know how you feel and it's nice to know that there is another person out there who does what I do too!

Lulu... Not sure what he thought. I haven't encountered too many people like him in my almost 32 years in utility construction , but I have had a few. Before I worked for a public utility, I worked at a submarine shipyard so I was already battle ready from 6 years there.

HappyBookWorm... I did win the book lottery. It was a wonderful addition to the Hidden Legacy series. Catalina is such an evolved character, I really love her. I read the book in less than a day.

Now, I have no idea what I want to read. It's always hard after you read a favorite author's novel to get on with another book.

222868 Kristi... I had an old man stop in the street next to my work truck, (I was up in the bucket), and he started this rant about how I was taking a job from a man trying to support his family. I yelled back at him how do you know that I'm not supporting a family? A few minutes later a police officer showed up and said that there had been a complaint that I was blocking the travel lanes of the street. I asked who had complained and he said that he couldn't say. I then asked if it was an old man ranting about me taking a job away from a man trying to support his family. The cop couldn't hold a straight face and started to laugh. I just nodded and said that I had my answer. Sadly, he wasn't the only person who has said that, and worse, to me.

222868 It's your lucky day! You wished for Emerald Blaze, and you have been randomly selected to receive this book on NetGalley. Sign in right now to start reading.
OMG! Yay I finally get an Ilona Andrews ARC!! It's 10:50p.m. and I'm going to dive right in.

I've been watching a bit of TV lately. (The Old Guard for one).

I did finish listening to a couple of books.
I got this book on Chirp

29 Seconds 29 Seconds by T.M. Logan This is a bit of a deviation from my usual reading. The premise is that a young English professor being sexually harassed by her head of the department has a chance to make him disappear. A serial abuser, he is "bullet-proof" because he brings in large grants to the university where they work, has a popular BBC2 show, and is very good at covering all of his bases. I liked the storyline but the h was a dish rag at times. Virtually unable to lie, the h acts guilty about things that she shouldn't have to worry about. Separated from her husband who is off finding himself with his latest girlfriend, she actually has inner debates about whether she will take her husband back if he wants to return to her and their 2 children. The twist at the end of the book was surprisingly good, although it felt a bit out of place for the MC. It fed my need for revenge.

I also read More Bedtime Stories for Cynics More Bedtime Stories for Cynics (Bedtime Stories for Cynics, #2) by Nick Offerman These are "cracked" fairy tales. Most were mediocre at best, some were actually stupid. Sometimes I like this type of sketch writing in a book but this one didn't deliver.

Vinity I'm glad that you finally came around to my way of thinking, I think that Veronica Speedwell is a stronger character, (which I tend to like better). Julia Grey is a great personality, but she is more subtle and adheres to more social norms. Both are great and fantastically written.

Frisco... I've done non-traditional jobs all of my life. In college I was told by a potential employer (at a radio station), that he wouldn't hire me because "What will you do if it snows?" I didn't get what he saying for a second because I couldn't believe he actually said that. I told him that I would drive to work in the snow and he actually laughed at me. Needless to say, I didn't get that job. Many years later I was working at the company that I work for now but then I was a lineman. My boss half jokingly said that because it had snowed about 18 inches the night before that he half expected me to call out rather than drive in. (I drive pick up trucks). I gave him a good sneer and walked away.
My Dad taught me to drive in the snow when I was probably 14 years old. We used to do donuts in a snow filled parking lot near our house. Intentionally putting myself into a spin so I could steer out of it. Good Luck in your pursuit of another job! :-}

222868 Carol in Ilona Andrew's latest blog post, Gordon said to Ilona we're #44 on Amazon for Ryder. ..... She said "it had better not suck then" I'm paraphrasing a bit.

I haven't been reading much, I have been immersed in The Handmaids Tale on HULU. I read the book ages ago, but with the modernizing of the tech, and my poor memory, (it was a long time ago), I hardly recognize it. It's like a whole new world to me.

HappyBookWorm... I like his narration too. He made the Dragon's of Bloodfire series for me.

222868 Aww heck while I'm posting a hundred times, D.B. Jackson, (David B Coe) has a short story about conjurers in a collective book, Galactic Stew Galactic Stew by David B. Coe I assume this takes place in the Thieftaker universe. He also has a novella trilogy coming out in the Thieftaker series later this year. That is an excellent series which is very good on audio. Set in Revolutionary times in Boston, Ethan Kaille is a conjurer able to do blood magic and his specialty is detective work, (a thieftaker). This series is a combination of the makings and division of the pre-Revolutionary war Boston residents and deep magic. With all of the prejudices that come with both. Thieftaker Thieftaker (Thieftaker Chronicles, #1) by D.B. Jackson
Jackson and Faith Hunter did a series of short stories with the Kaille character and a young witch (Hannah), who was a relative of the Everhart sisters of the Jane Yellowrock series. Water Witch Water Witch by Faith Hunter is one of those stories.

222868 I forgot to mention... Poison or Protect Poison or Protect (Delightfully Deadly, #1) by Gail Carriger by Gail Carriger is a novella in her new A Delightfully Deadly series which is set in her parasol verse. I liked the Parasol Protectorate series and I hope that this is written just a cleverly as those.

222868 Monadh... I have had that happen to me. I seldom write a full review except for ARC's and lesser known indie authors. I have never been charged with a guideline violation and recently my review didn't show up for over a day. By then, it was on the third page. Kick-ass heroine sounds awfully mild compared to what I have read. Good Luck!

222868 I was going to say the same thing. I just reboot my kindle and all is well.

LAB... Thanks for the info on the book store. I have a couple of friends that would be up for a road trip to a bookstore like that.

222868 Lisa... Those are problems to contemplate. I have a ton of books on my kindles because I never delete them. Between my DTB's and my loaded up kindles, I suppose that I have enough to read for a long, long time. Even my local library, (which is currently only open by appointment), has electronic library cards, I wonder if we will still have access to library ebooks if anything apocalypso, (to quote Monadh), happens. I doubt it. Who knows maybe there is an Amazon contingency plan if it all goes wonky.

LAB... How are you? It sounds like you and your hubby got quite a deal. If you don't mind, what town is the Used Bookstore Warehouse in? It sounds like a wonderful road trip destination. Is it open every day or just on the weekend?

222868 Kristi posted a link for a solar charger and a few of us here purchased one. Not that I don't have enough dead tree books to last a long time, but it is nice to know that I could keep my kindle going is the worst case scenario came about.

I finished Of Sea and Shadow. Of Sea and Shadow (The Elder Empire Sea, #1) by Will Wight Which is the other book 1 of the series from the point of view of the "Captain".

I listened to a short story about "Agent 355" the author's imagining of the role that an actual young woman played in the plot to thwart the conspiracy between the British and the traitor Benedict Arnold. (A side note, Benedict Arnold grew up and had a family home at that time about 4 miles from here. A mob dug up his father, Benedict senior's, interred body and threw him and his head stone into our local river called the Thames. The house was burned right after he escaped to England with his Tory wife).
Agent 355 Agent 355 by Marie Benedict coincidentally, the author's last name is Benedict.

222868 Melindeeloo.... Can you update me on the first Chicagoland Heirs book? I forgot what her deep dark secret was. Or, does the second book give me enough info? I can't believe I forgot. I do those books in audio so it would be a re-listen to catch up.

222868 Frisco... You are welcome to rant here. I live in CT and it is starting to be a more "flexible" attitude re: the mask wearing per the 20 & 30 year olds here too. The governor had to stop the bars from opening because of what has happened in other states. Lots of restaurants are still only opening their out door seating. I worry about some of our favorite local restaurants and if they will survive.

Young folks having "Covid" parties, really, really stupid. (They pool money, expose the party members to know Covid positive people and the first one who tests positive wins the pool). Great!

A Florida man was interviewed and he said that some people read, some listen to music, but he socializes. He said that he has a right to see his friends. When asked about him exposing others, he said that he knows the risks. When asked if he knew about all of his friends' medical histories he said that he didn't know anything about them. The interviewer then stated that the sound woman had battled childhood cancer and that while healthy now, she was "at risk". The guy then said that how was he supposed to know that. (She was never at risk, and it was a spur of the moment example, he wasn't using her to "catch" people and she gave him permission). It just goes to show how at risk we can be.

On to books, I have been listening to Of Sea and Shadow Of Sea and Shadow (The Elder Empire Sea, #1) by Will Wight still haven't finished it. There just isn't enough time.

Amazon has Amazon Prime days and makes the kindle unlimited price lower for a year. I renew it every time I see it and I am projected out for a while. This year's Amazon Prime Days are supposed to begin on September 7th.

Lisa... I do too. I miss downloading my next adventure on my kindle as soon as it was possible. Except for BDB, there aren't too many series that I have stuck with for so long. I read everything that Ilona Andrews writes, and there aren't many other authors that I can say that for. Patricia Briggs, Thea Harrison, J.R. Ward, are a few, but I can honestly say that I don't have to read them like I used to. I once stood on my cruise ship balcony so that I could download a Ward book in Puerto Rico, (I used the cell service there, it was free and internet on the ship was very costly). I usually listen to books so I hate it when the audio version comes out at the same time as the next book comes out, no fair!

Do any of you folks have authors that you have to read asap anymore?
