21757 25.5 - Andy P’s Task: By the Number

This is a two book task. Please choose one book that satisfies the requirements for Book 1 and another that satisfies the requirements for Book 2.
No book with Children's genres can be used for this task.
The combined total of pages for both books must equal 500 or more pages.

Book 1. Read a book whose title (subtitles excluded) contains a number written as such. The number must be a whole number that stands alone comprised of integer(s) 0-9. Example: 1968: The Year That Rocked the World, The 47 Ronin Story,

Book 2. Read a book whose title (subtitles excluded) contains a number written in letter form. It cannot be a word that represents a partial number (half, quarter), unit of measurement, group (dozen), or plural (millions). Example: Child Zero, One Day in December

21757 25.4 - Nick KY’s Task: Hawkeye and B.J.

M*A*S*H is a favorite movie of mine from the 70s and the TV series is a favorite of the 70s and 80s. Though the character of Hawkeye’s buddy in the film and first 3 seasons of the series was Trapper John, the role of best friend passed on to B.J. for 8 of the 11 seasons of the TV series.

This is a two book task. Choose two of three options.
Required: State the options.

Option 1. Hawkeye. -- In the series Hawkeye was played by actor Alan Alda.

Read a book by an author whose first and last name begin with the same letter.

Option 2. B.J. -- In one episode, Hawkeye tries to find out what the B. and the J. of B.J.’s name stands for. All B.J. claims is that he was named after his mother “Bea” Hunnicutt and his father “Jay” Hunicutt.

Read a book that has both a B and a J in the title/subtitle and/or author's name.

Option 3. Hawkeye and B.J. are Doctors caught in an absurd world. Read a book from one o the following lists:
Medicine and Literature
These Books Will Kill You
Health Aging
Required: State the list and the page number

21757 25.3 - MAZZA1's task: Well Hello Number 9

In April we welcomed our newest Grandson to the family, although not without a little caution as, eager to meet us all he came into the world 13 weeks early and weighing only 1Kg. However now he is home and thriving although he may have hearing and visual problems

This is a 2 book task read one book for 2 different options.
Your total page count must be at least 501 pages. No books with a Children's genre are allowed.

Option 1
As he arrived early Mum and Dad were not ready with names for him and so for at least a month he was affectionately known as Number 9 (our 9th grandchild).

Read a book that has a number 9 in its series number- whole numbers only- ex. #9, #19, #29. The series number must show in greyscale in the Goodreads record.

Option 2
Eventually he did get the most beautiful name - Louis Paul Michael but a little part of me still uses his birth pseudonym of Number 9.
Read a book by an author who uses a pseudonym. Your book may be written under any of the pseudonyms (or the real name) used by the author.
Required: If the pseudonym is not evident on the GR author page or GR metadata for your book, provide a reference link.

Option 3
I couldn’t write this task without mentioning Louis’ big sister 16 year old Avelyn, who stayed calm and made sure her mum got the help she needed and also looked after her younger siblings protecting them from what was going on. I am so proud of her. In honour of Avelyn:

Read a book which contains the word “TEEN” intact in its title or subtitle
e.g. Ghost in the Canteen I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death, The Velveteen Daughter

21757 There are just a few days left in the Summer 2022 Challenge, so there are some things you need to do NOW!

We post this message every season, so theoretically most of you should know the drill. This season is a little different, thanks to the GR changes.

Rather than repeating, I strongly urge you to read the Important Info for the remainder of the summer challenge.. You should especially note the additional genre tags that will be considered under the Childrens book rules.

And here are the standard reminders:
1. Post any tasks that you have already completed NOW. If your tasks are not posted completely and correctly by midnight Eastern time on August 31, you don’t get credit for them, no matter why they didn’t get posted.

If you post tasks at the last minute, problems may not be identified in time for you to deal with them and get credit for the task. Sometimes the problem is that you forgot to include required information, but if you don’t post until the last day, there may not be time for me to identify the problem and for you to correct it before midnight.

To get credit for a task, it must be posted with all necessary requirements in the post and the books must fit the task. If you have any doubts about a book that you’re planning to read at the last minute, you should get it approved in the help thread (and include that information in your post) to avoid any last minute disappointments.

If you're claiming a children's book, I suggest including the AR Bookfinder information, even if you don't notice the genre childrens on the main page. That may avoid problems.

2. From here on out, you should post tasks as you finish them, rather than holding them to post a bunch at a time. And, please, before you post, read the task requirements! If something says REQUIRED, you must include it. Read through the task requirements one last time before you post, to make sure that your book actually works for the task and that you’ve included everything. And, for a list task, check again to make sure the book is actually on the page of the list that you're saying - if you found it on the list 2 months ago, it may well have moved.

Just do your posting as you read, and avoid any unnecessary problems.
Many posts at the end of the challenge make your moderators cranky. Please avoid that.

2. If you’re planning on reading any books that only exist in e-book form, make sure that they’ve been approved for length. Check the spreadsheet linked in post 1 of the ebook verification thread first, and if your book hasn’t already been approved, post in the approval thread NOW, so that there will be time to do the research and give you approval. You need to request ebook verification by August 30. Ebook verification will not happen on August 31.

Remember that the spreadsheet line or post # MUST be listed in your completed task post for any book that only exists in ebook form, and ebook only formats may not be used for tasks that require a specific number of pages or page limit.

3. Check your Readerboard totals for points, Golden Oldies, It's A Fact, and Big Books NOW. If they don’t agree with your records, first make sure that you check the post through which the Readerboards have been updated. Then check your math, check to see if you have messages in the ?/problem thread, check to make sure that you’ve actually posted the tasks that you think you have – GR has been known to eat messages! If checking all of those things doesn’t resolve the discrepancy, post in the ?/problem thread right away, giving as much info as possible so that I can try to resolve it.

If a problem was noted with one of your posts, be sure that you reposted the task in the regular posting thread - an edit to the old post, or a note in the ?/problems thread amending the post is not sufficient.

Let's try to have a smooth and problem-free end to the Spring Challenge!

21757 2. Book Formats, Page Numbers, Genres continued

12. Large Type books may be used. The mass market paperback edition of the title must meet the 100 page threshold. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition. Big Book tickets may be claimed for Large Type books if the mass market paperback meets the Big Book requirement. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition.
The non-large-type print edition determined via the method above should be used for tasks requiring page numbers.

3. Posting Requirements
1. To claim a task in Completed Tasks, the book you use MUST exist on Goodreads. Ask a librarian to add a book or edition for you if your book does not yet exist in the Goodreads database. You MUST include a link to the book edition you read. If you read an ebook or audiobook, you may link to the appropriate paper edition instead, but you should indicate that you actually read an ebook or audiobook edition. For instructions on adding a link, see Technical Help Needed? Ask Here in General Help. Further details on posting requirements can be found in Posting Requirements in the Rules folder.

2. New players and players returning to the challenge after seasons away must consult the Readerboard Names discussion thread to set up or verify the name they will use to post completed tasks. See the details in posts #1 and #2 of that thread.

3. It's fine to change your mind about which books you plan to use for which task at any point. You must first unclaim any tasks involved in the book move, then reclaim the tasks. Instructions are in Posting Requirements in the Rules folder and in the current season's folder.

4. To determine if a book fits a task moderators will rely on Goodreads’ main book page for information such as title, author name(s), Goodreads author status, page number, ratings, etc. The moderators will make their decisions based on the information in the book link you provide. Therefore, make sure that you provide a link to the exact edition of the book you read.

5. Task Requirements- SRC practices and conventions are explained in the Default Rules and FAQs in the Rules folder.

>1. For tasks that require a word in a title, only the title and the subtitle may be used. Series titles will NOT apply ex. "a novel of Series name", "A Series name book", "Book # of Series name", etc.. Task creators may allow series titles if explicitly included in the task description.

>2. For tasks that require a specific image or color on their cover, the player must read the book edition that has the required element.

>3. For tasks that require reading a book from a Goodreads listopia list or shelf, the book must appear on the list or shelf when you access it and the player may not add books to the list to be used for that task.

>4. For tasks that require books within specified genres the main book page's front page genre list will be used to determine suitability. Unless explicitly limited by the task creator, reasonable variations of genres will be accepted: ex. genre- mythology: myths, myths-and-legends, mythological, etc. would be accepted genre variations. The genre must appear on the list when you access it and the player may not shelve a book as a genre in order to use the book for that task.

>5. For tasks that require information about a book or author, such as author's birthday or author's national origin, the Goodreads record will be used to determine fit. If the information is missing from the Goodreads record, a link to verifying information may be included in your post. Outside data cannot be used to contradict data existing on Goodreads.
Only authors that are identified as authors (or a default blank in the author role field), co-authors, or contributors may be used for tasks involving author information. Other roles or functions such as editor, illustrator, artist, translator, introduction, designed by, foreward, preface, assistant or afterword may not be used for author-sourced tasks. Institutional authors and publishers, such as Scientific American and Time-Life Books, may not be used for tasks involving author information. Ask about other roles identified in a Goodreads record in the season's General Questions help thread.

6. If a task allows a one book option where a single book must meet two different option requirements, the same element (word, object, etc) cannot be used to fulfill both options. Ex. a specific title word required for an option and a title word from song lyrics for another option = the same single word cannot be used to fulfill both options.

7. If information in a Goodreads record is incorrect or incomplete, you may ask a Goodreads librarian to update the record if possible. Information required for a task, such as missing print edition page numbers, should be corrected before you post.
Aug 24, 2022 06:38AM

21757 2. Book Formats, Page Numbers, Genres

1. Any form of a book (print copy, audio, or e- book) is acceptable unless otherwise stated in a specific task. See rule 7 for page number specifics.

2. Books in languages other than English may be used. Please provide information on the book and/or title to your English speaking moderators so they can understand how the books fit the tasks. Any task requiring a specific title (number of letters, number of words, specific word in title, etc.) should apply to the title that you use.
If you read an edition in a language other than English:

a) For a task that requires a word in the title you may use a direct word translation, such as required word purple A Cor Púrpura Purple is Púrpura in Portuguese

b) For a task that requires letters or a letter sequence intact, such as "MAN" intact in the title, you must find those letters or sequence of letters in the title you read. You could read Cumanda O Un Drama Entre Salvajes with MAN found intact in that title. You could NOT read The Old Man and the Sea in a foreign translation, such as Il vecchio e il mare as the letter sequence MAN is not found intact in that title.

3. Books must have at least 100 pages to be used for points in the SRC. This limit may be referenced as 100+.
Only 2 plays or 2 books of poetry may be combined to reach the 100 page minimum. Other genres of books must meet the 100+ page requirement on their own.

One book between 80 -99 pages may be used for ONE 5 point task.

4. If you're on the new book page (Aug 2022) , you can, and should, click on the "see more" at the end of the listed tags. The display may reveal up to 10 tags that WILL apply to your book. The “see all” genres do not apply to SRC tasks.
1. Any book that has "childrens" or "kids" or a related genre of Middle Grade, Juvenile, Chapter Books, Storytime, Young Readers, Childrens Classics, School Stories listed as a genre tag on its main page MUST be validated in the following manner:
a) The book MUST be found on ARBookFind: http://www.arbookfind.com/default.aspx and/or ARBookFind UK: https://www.arbookfind.co.uk/default..... ISBNs may be entered. If books contained in an omnibus or collected edition have the main page genre of Childrens or kids, the AR Bookfinder scores of those individual works will be considered, even if the collection itself is not listed.

b) Books with an Interest Level (IL) designation of LG are NOT allowed for points in the SRC. The AR BookFinder UK equivalent for LG is LY.

c) Books that have an IL designation of MG+ or UG may be used with no restrictions (other than general SRC and specific task requirements). The AR BookFinder UK equivalent for UG is UY. However, you must state the IL designation when you post the book.

d) Books that have an IL designation of MG MUST ALSO have a BL of 5.0 (or higher) AND AR Pts of 7.0 (or higher). The AR BookFinder UK equivalent for MG is MY.

All AR Bookfinder information including scores MUST be posted when the book is claimed for points or no points will be awarded (You can copy the AR BookFinder ratings)
ex. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
IL: MG - BL: 7.3 - AR Pts: 17.0

e) Books with the genre Childrens > Picture Books may not be used for SRC tasks.

f) If a book is clearly an adult book, but has "childrens" or "kids" listed as a main page genre and is not listed on AR Bookfinder, you may ask for it to be verified as an adult book in Not Kids Verification You must include that the book has been verified as having a special exception by including the post number or google document line approval when you post in Completed Tasks.

5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may only be used for 5, 10, and 15 point tasks unless specifically allowed in the task description for a higher point task. Task creators may allow the use of one book with a main page genre of comics, manga, etc. that fit the general SRC requirements per task.

Graphic novels, manga or collected comic book issues must be at least 100 pages. The one-time 5 point task exception does not apply.
Collections of syndicated, periodical or internet comic strips, single or short-format panels, or cartoons must be at least 200 pages to be used for SRC tasks.
Webcomics unless collected and published as an ebook with an ISBN or ASIN may not be used for SRC tasks.
Collections of comic books, comics or short-form panels do not work for tasks that require short stories.

"Coffee table", Art books, and other books consisting primarily of images or photographs without a substantial written component (essays, criticism, etc.) may not be be claimed for points. These books may often have the genre Art or Humor. Vanity Fair: The Portraits: A Century of Iconic Images, National Geographic Simply Beautiful Photographs, Signspotting: Absurd and Amusing Signs from Around the World, Stuff On My Cat: The Book .

6. Poetry and Plays may be used throughout the challenge. Regular page number rules apply, except as noted in Rule 3.

7. When determining page count, you should go by the copy you read- EXCEPT as noted below for ebooks, audiobooks, and large print books. Therefore, if you obtain (own, borrow, check out from the library, etc.) the hardback edition, use the page count for the hardback edition. If you obtain the paperback edition, use that page count.

If you read an ebook, or audiobook use the page count for the mass market paperback if one exists. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition.

>If there are multiple editions in a format:
From the editions page (click all editions on the main book page)
Set the Format, beginning with Mass Market Paperback
Set the Sort By as "num ratings"
Use the top edition result to determine the page number for ebooks and audiobooks
If there are no editions in MMPB, reset with Paperback and the same sort (num ratings). If there are no paperback editions, reset with Hardcover and the same sort (num ratings). If there are no print editions the ebook or audiobook may not be used for a task requiring a page number

> If the sort results in a Large Type edition at the top omit that book and move to the next record or format.

> If the sort results in an edition in a language other than English the edition SHOULD be used to establish length.

> If you have any questions about which edition should be used to establish page count please ask for a ruling by a moderator in the season's General Questions Help Thread

8. Using ebooks
If no print edition of a book exists on Goodreads, you MUST get the book pre-approved by a moderator in the topic "eBook verification-no print edition" in General Help.

ebooks without print editions cannot be used for tasks requiring a specific number of pages. ebooks can be used for specific page number tasks as long as there is a print equivalent that can be used to determine page numbers- see #7 above. ebooks without print equivalents can be used for tasks without specific page requirements, since it is usually possible to "guesstimate" from the word count that a book is at least 100 pages long.

If you claim a book in Completed Tasks that exists ONLY in ebook format, you MUST provide a reference to the ebook verification document when you post ex."Approved @ line #" or provide the post number in the ebook verification thread where it was approved ex. "ebook Approved post #"

9. Audiobooks may be used for SRC tasks. Page numbers should be counted as described for ebooks above. Audiobooks that do not have a written word equivalent, either published in paper or digitally, may NOT be used for SRC tasks.
Audiobooks that are noted as being “abridged” may be used to meet the general 100+ page book requirement as long as they are at least 2 hours in length. Abridged audiobooks may NOT be used for tasks with defined longer page requirements as there are no direct print equivalents.

10. Advance Reader Copies may be used to fulfill SRC tasks. Completed task posts MUST include a link to the book and identify the book as a publisher's advance copy.

11. Books identified as an "omnibus" (a volume of reprinted works of a single author or of related works), as a "bundle" (a digital collection of works of a single author or of related works) or as collected works (The Complete .... , anthologies, etc.) may be isolated into component parts and read separately as long as the isolated work has been published separately and meets the minimum page requirements.
The Harry Bosch Novels, Volume 1: The Black Echo / The Black Ice / The Concrete Blonde contains 3 independently published titles: The Black Echo, The Black Ice, The Concrete Blonde. These titles in this omnibus may be read as separate books.

If you choose to read an element isolated from an aggregate work, you MUST include a link to the book (isbn/asin) that you read AND provide a link to a separately published work that relates to the isolated title. The use of particular title words, cover colors, or cover images to fulfill tasks applies to the actual book that you read. That means:
>tasks involving elements in the title/subtitle are determined by the isolated work
>tasks involving the author/author name are determined by the isolated work
>tasks involving the book's cover are determined by the book that you read. If an omnibus includes individual covers for the isolated works use the cover for the individual title. If the only cover image is the cover of the aggregate work use that cover.

Page numbers should be determined by the copy you read. If a component part has 200 pages in the print edition you read, record those numbers. For digital or audio formats follow the page number guidelines in item 7 above for the isolated title.

21757 THE RULES: Effective Fall Challenge 2022

Part I

1. General Information

1. Everyone is welcome and can join in at anytime during a currently running challenge.

2. Challenge dates are:
• Winter = December 1st to February 28th (29th in a leap year)
• Spring = March 1st to May 31st
• Summer = June 1st to August 31st
• Fall = September 1st to November 30th
Note: Challenges start and end at MIDNIGHT EST on their respective start/end dates.

3. In order for points to be counted, tasks must be reported correctly in the Completed Tasks thread by Midnight EST on the final day of the challenge.

4. All books read during the dates of the currently running challenge can be used for that challenge, even if starting the challenge late.
For example, should you join the challenge after any start date (January 1st, for instance), you can include all books read in the period of that current challenge (in this case, from December 1st) into that challenge, providing they fit a task.

5. Tasks can be completed in any order

6. Each task can be completed only once for points.

7. Each book must be read completely and can be counted only once per challenge.
"Choose your own adventure" books or other formats that offer multiple reading paths or outcomes must be read to complete all possible options.
A book is a completed work of text that stands on its own as a product, whether printed, audio or electronic, that is eligible for an ISBN that is recorded in the Goodreads database.
Not all items with an ISBN are considered books for SRC purposes. Flash cards, tarot cards, workbooks, writing prompt books, coloring books, puzzle books, calendars, atlases, bound sheet music, librettos, collections of book previews, any other product with a purpose beyond traditional text reading, or other types of works specifically referenced elsewhere in the SRC rules or FAQs are not considered books.

8. Re-reads are acceptable unless otherwise stated in a specific task.

9. If you aren't sure if a book will fit a task, please ask about the suitability of the book in the appropriate Task Help thread.

10. Pre-reading: Books longer than 499 pages (500+) that were started any time before the beginning of a challenge can be used to fulfill a task if more than half the book is read during the challenge.
For example, if you were to read 249 pages (or less) of a 500 page book before the start of a challenge, this book would count if it met a task requirement. However, if you had read 250 pages (or more) of a 500 page book before the start of a challenge, this book would not count. Books less than 500 pages should NOT be begun before the start of a challenge.

21757 I can't promise that this will work on your computer, and certainly not on a phone, but we have found a way to enlarge covers that works for me.

1. Go to the main book page and right click on the picture of the book cover.
2. Click on "open image in new tab."
3. You should see a new tab open at the top of your screen that's a jpeg image.
4. Click on that tab. You'll see an enlarged image of the cover.
5. You can use Ctrl + or Ctrl - to make it larger or smaller.

I am working on a desktop using a Chrome browser and this works for me. I have no idea whether it will work for you, and I AM NOT a computer expert, so don't ask me to trouble shoot any problems you may have. However, it's worth a try.

nope. and it's fixed now. And questions should NOT be asked in the Fall Challenge Task list - you need to ask your question in the thread for the task in question or in the genre verification thread. Your question in that thread will be deleted tomorrow.

21757 25.2 - Amy FL’s Task: If I Only Had a Heart
Poor sentimental Tin Man spent the entire movie lamenting his lack of a heart, so let’s help him find one.

This is a two-book task. Read one book for two different options. The two books combined must be at least 500 pages.
OR
one book that fulfills two different options, but that book must be at least 500 pages long.
Required: Specify the options.

Option 1: Read a book with the word HEART in the title. It must be standalone (no hyphenated words) and cannot be possessive. It may not be a plural since the Tin Man only needs one heart.

Option 2: Read a book by a single author whose name contains all the letters in HEART.
Heather Young, Martha Wells

Option 3: The Tin Man was so sweet and sentimental, that the heart he was searching for seemed to already be there. The song Tin Man by America explains just that.

Read a book that contains a word in the title that can be found in the lyrics of Tin Man: https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/ameri....
The word must be at least four letters long and it must match exactly.

Example for the one-book option: The Ink Black Heart by Robert Galbraith (1,024 pages)
Option 1: Heart in the title
Option 2: Heart in the author's name

21757 25.1 - Sandy's Task - Use Your Alphabet

This is a two book task, and the page total of the two books combined must be at least 500 pages. No books with the tags Childrens, Kids, Middle Grade, Juvenile, and related synonyms may be used.

Book 1 - Read a book that includes all of the vowels, A E I O U, in its title/subtitle.

Book 2 - Read a book by a single author whose initials (all of them) are only consonants (that is, not the vowels listed for book 1). We will count Y as a consonant for this task.
