21757 TASK REQUIREMENTS

1. To claim a task in Completed Tasks, the book you use MUST exist on Goodreads.

--A) Ask a librarian to add a book or edition for you if your book does not yet exist in the Goodreads database.

--B) If information in a Goodreads record is incorrect or incomplete, you may ask a Goodreads librarian to update the record if possible. Information required for a task, such as missing print edition page numbers, should be corrected before you post.

2. If you aren't sure if a book will fit a task, please ask about the suitability of the book in the appropriate Task Help thread.

3. To determine if a book fits a task, moderators will rely on Goodreads’ main book page for information such as title, author name(s), Goodreads author status, page number, ratings, setting, etc.

--A) The moderators will make their decisions based on the information in the book link you provide. Therefore, make sure that you provide a link to the exact edition of the book the qualifies for the task and fits all SRC requirements.

--B) If the information is missing from the Goodreads record, a link to verifying information may be included in your post. Outside data cannot be used to contradict data existing on Goodreads.

4. Title requirements

--A) For tasks that require a word in a title, only the title and the subtitle may be used.

--B) Series titles will NOT apply ex. "a novel of Series name", "A Series name book", "Book # of Series name", etc.. Task creators may allow series titles if explicitly included in the task description.

5. Cover requirements

--A) For tasks that require a specific image or color on their cover, the player must link the book edition that has the required element.

6. Shelf or list requirements

--A)For tasks that require reading a book from a Goodreads listopia list or shelf, the book must appear on the list or shelf when you access it.

--B The player may not add books to the list to be used for that task.

7. Genre requirements

--A) For tasks that require books within specified genres the main book page's front page genre list will be used to determine suitability.

--B) Unless explicitly limited by the task creator, reasonable variations of genres will be accepted: ex. genre- mythology: myths, myths-and-legends, mythological, etc. would be accepted genre variations.

--C) The genre must appear on the list when you access it and the player may not shelve a book as a genre in order to use the book for that task.

--D) The player may request that the moderator or task creator note a listed genre when accessed in case the genre list has changed by the time it is posted as part of a completed task.

8. Author requirements

--A) For tasks that require information about an author, such as author's birthday or author's national origin, the Goodreads record will be used to determine fit.

----1. If the information is missing from the Goodreads record, a link to verifying information may be included in your post. Outside data cannot be used to contradict data existing on Goodreads.

--B) Only authors that are identified as authors (or a default blank in the author role field), co-authors, or contributors may be used for tasks involving author information.

--C)Other roles or functions such as editor, illustrator, artist, translator, introduction, designed by, foreward, preface, assistant or afterword may not be used for author-sourced tasks. Institutional authors and publishers, such as Scientific American and Time-Life Books, may not be used for tasks involving author information.

--D) Ask about other roles identified in a Goodreads record in the season's General Questions help thread.

9. If a task allows a one book option where a single book must meet two different option requirements, the same element (word, object, etc) cannot be used to fulfill both options.

--A) Ex. a specific title word required for an option and a title word from song lyrics for another option = the same single word cannot be used to fulfill both options.

10. More specific SRC practices and conventions are explained in the Default Rules and FAQs in the Rules folder.

21757 20.9 Moderator's Pet: Trishhartuk's Task - Crater Lake

Being a Brit, I haven’t been to that many of the US National Parks. However, one I have visited is Crater Lake (https://www.nps.gov/crla/index.htm), the only National Park in Oregon. It has been known to the Native Americans for thousands of years, and was considered a sacred site, but wasn’t “discovered” by the European settlers until 1853. It was designated as a National Park on 22 May 1902, and was only the fifth National Park to be established. I first visited in 1996 and have been back twice since, as it’s one of my favourite places on Earth. This task celebrates this wonderful place.

Choose one option and read a book for that option. As Crater Lake is the only National Park in Oregon, all books must be by a single author (no writing teams using a single name!).
Required: State the option chosen

Option 1- Crater Lake is in the caldera of a volcano called Mount Mazama. Despite having not erupted for 7,700 years, it is still considered active by the US Geological Survey. Read a book where the author’s first and last initials can be found in MOUNT MAZAMA. Letters may be used as often as they appear.

Option 2- It is the deepest lake in the US, at 1,943 feet. There is one trail which gets you down to water level, and is classed as “strenuous”: the trail is only 1.1 miles long, but it drops 700 feet. Getting down is fine. Getting back up however… It’s worth it, though. The view at lake level is superb, and you can swim (if you’re brave enough) or take a boat trip. Read a book with large, natural body of water (lake, river or sea/ocean) on the cover. Man made places such as swimming pools, or just water with no other features to indicate whether it's natural or not, are not acceptable.
Required: post the cover.
These work: Stillhouse Lake (Stillhouse Lake, #1) by Rachel Caine A River Runs Through It and Other Stories by Norman Maclean The House at Sea's End (Ruth Galloway, #3) by Elly Griffiths Halloween Moon (Cottage on Gooseberry Bay, #1) by Kathi Daley
These do not: From Below by Darcy Coates The Lake of Lost Girls by Katherine Greene You and Me on Vacation by Emily Henry

Option 3- If taking it easy, and driving round the caldera enjoying the view is more your thing, you can follow the Rim Drive, with its thirteen designated viewpoints. It’s a stunning trip. However, because of its altitude (6,500-7,900ft), and average snowfall of 41ft a year, it is only open from May to October. Read a book first published between May and October (inclusive) of any year from 1996-onwards.

Option 4- Two main islands break the surface of the lake: Wizard Island, which you can visit by boat; and the Phantom Ship, which you can only look at. Read a book with the MPG of Fantasy, Gothic or Ghosts (stand-alone or embedded).

21757 20.8 Nickels and Dimes: MEGSCL's Task - 2025 Goals

My task is based on my two personal reading goals for this year.
Required: State the option chosen

Option 1- Read more new releases and ARCs. For this task read any book first published in March 2025 or later.

Option 2- Read award shortlists. Read a book that has been longlisted, shortlisted, or won any of these prizes in any year.
Required: The award must be listed on the GR book page

Stella Prize
Women's Prize for Fiction
Miles Franklin
Booker Prize

21757 25.5 - Fly's Task - Celebrating Summertime
This is a two book task. Choose two different months and read a book for one option each.
State the options
One graphic novel may be read for this task.

June
Option 1 -June is the most popular month for weddings!
Read a book where a wedding or a wedding anniversary is essential to the story.
Required: If not evident from the Goodreads main page, provide a reference
or
Read a book that has a wedding dress, a wedding cake, Champagne glass(es) or wedding ring on the cover.
Required: Post the cover.
Option 2- In the northern hemisphere, June contains the longest day of the year :)
For this task choose one of the longest books on your TBR pile. Go to 'My Books,' choose the shelf 'Want to read,' set it to show 20 books per page, sort by number of pages in descending order, and choose a book from the first page.
or
If you don't have a 'Want to read' shelf, you can read any book that exceeds 600 pages.

July
Option 1 - July 4th is American Independence Day.
Read a book with a cover containing all the colors red, white, and blue according to Tineye. Any percentage is okay as long as all three colors are present.
If you'd rather celebrate Bastille day, July 14th, then you can find a cover with blue, white and red ;)
Required Post the cover.
Option 2 - July starts the dog days of summer. Celebrate by reading a book with a domestic dog on the cover!
Required Post the cover.

August
Option 1 - August is back-to-school time!
Read a book whose main character is either a teacher or a student.
Required:If it isn't evident from the Goodreads main page, provide a reference.
Option 2 - August has a lot of food holidays! I'm going to choose three of my favorites: International Beer Day, National S'mores Day, and National Waffle Day.
Read a book by an author whose initials (first and last) are in one of the following words: BEER or SMORES or WAFFLE.
Letters can be used only as many times as they appear. Books written by multiple authors can be used as long as ALL authors fit the task individually.

For example, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society would NOT work, because although author Mary Ann Shaffer has initials MS in SMORES, the second author Annie Barrows' initials AB are not found in any of the three words. However, The Bletchley Riddle would work because both authors Ruta Sepetys (RS) and Steve Sheinkin (SS) have initials in SMORES, and so individually meet the requirements, and Pour l’intersectionnalité would work because author Sarah Mazouz has initials SM in SMORES, and Eléonore Lépinard has initials EL in WAFFLE.

21757 VERIFYING MINIMUM PAGE COUNTS FOR BOOKS

1. Each book must have at least 100 pages.

2. Some tasks may require a higher page count at the creator's discretion.

3. Page counts will be determined by the book link used in the Completed Task post.

--A) You may choose to link any English language edition that fulfills the page count requirements for the task. You do not necessarily have to link the edition you read.

--B) If you read a book in another language, you may opt to use that book link for your task.

--C) If you have any questions about which edition should be used to establish page count please ask for a ruling by a moderator in the season's General Questions Help Thread

Exceptions:

--A) You cannot use the book link for a Large Print edition.

--B) Ebooks without a page count or audiobooks without a print or digital edition MUST get the book pre-approved by a moderator in the topic "eBook verification-no print edition" in General Help

----1. These books may not be used for tasks with a minimum page count requirement other than the general 100 page SRC requirement.

21757 There are just a few days left in the Spring 2025 Challenge, so there are some things you need to do NOW!

1. Post any tasks that you have already completed NOW. If your tasks are not posted completely and correctly by midnight Eastern time on May 31st, you don’t get credit for them, no matter why they didn’t get posted.

If you post tasks at the last minute, problems may not be identified in time for you to deal with them and get credit for the task. Sometimes the problem is that you forgot to include required information, but if you don’t post until the last day, there may not be time for me to identify the problem and for you to correct it before midnight.

To get credit for a task, it must be posted with all necessary requirements in the post and the books must fit the task. If you have any doubts about a book that you’re planning to read at the last minute, you should get it approved in the help thread (and include that information in your post) to avoid any last minute disappointments.

If you're claiming a children's book, I suggest including the AR Bookfinder information, even if you don't notice the genre childrens on the main page. That may avoid problems.

2. From here on out, you should post tasks as you finish them, rather than holding them to post a bunch at a time. And, please, before you post, read the task requirements. If something says REQUIRED, you must include it. Read through the task requirements one last time before you post, to make sure that your book actually works for the task and that you’ve included everything. And, for a list task, check again to make sure the book is actually on the page of the list that you're saying - if you found it on the list 2 months ago, it may well have moved.

Just do your posting as you read, and avoid any unnecessary problems.
Many posts at the end of the challenge make your moderators cranky. If you don't want to get walloped with a Stephen King hardback, don't make the moderators cranky.

2. If you’re planning on reading any books that only exist in ebook form, make sure that they’ve been approved for length. Check the spreadsheet linked in post 1 of the ebook verification thread first, and if your book hasn’t already been approved, post in the approval thread NOW, so that there will be time to do the research and give you approval.

Remember that the spreadsheet line or post # MUST be listed in your completed task post for any book that only exists in ebook form, and ebook only formats may not be used for tasks that require a specific number of pages or page limit.

3. Check your Readerboard totals for points, Golden Oldies, It's A Fact, and Big Books NOW. If they don’t agree with your records, first make sure that you check the post through which the Readerboards have been updated. Then check your maths, check to see if you have messages in the ?/problem thread, check to make sure that you’ve actually posted the tasks that you think you have – GR has been known to eat messages! If checking all of those things doesn’t resolve the discrepancy, post in the ?/problem thread right away, giving as much info as possible so that I can try to resolve it.

If a problem was noted with one of your posts, be sure that you reposted the task in the regular posting thread - an edit to the old post, or a note in the ?/problems thread amending the post is not sufficient.

Let's try to have a smooth and problem-free end to the Spring Challenge.

21757 30. 9 Nick KY’s Task: Uluru – National Parks of Australia.

This is S’s suggestion for a task from the task suggestion thread:
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Australia

One of the natural wonders of the world, Uluru is a massive dome of red sandstone that seems to rise directly from the desert landscape. Uluru is a deeply spiritual site for the Anangu people. The caves here are filled with remarkable rock art in vivid shades of red, yellow, and brown that date back at least 10,000 years.

This is a two book task. Choose two different options and read one book for each option.
REQUIRED:State the Options.

Opt. 1. Read a book with at least 3 U's in the title/subtitle.

Opt. 2. Read a book with a word of at least four letters in the title/subtitle/author’s name from the phrase ULURU KATA TJUTA NICK KY. Letters may be used only as often as they appear in the target phrase.
Required: State the word

Opt. 3. Uluru is an outcrop – a geological term meaning the part of a rock that juts out of the surface of the earth. Read a book from the following Geology listopia: Best Geology Books
Required: State the page

Opt. 4. Read a book that takes place at least 50% in Australia or is by an author born in or currently living in Australia.
Required: If the setting or the author birth place is not evident from Goodreads, provide a reference.

21757 30.10 Amy FL’s task: Return of a Favorite

I’m a mystery reader who loves a good series. This summer I’m looking forward to reading the newest entry in one of my absolute favorites. Let’s pay tribute to that series.

This is a two book task. Choose two different options and read one book for each option.
Required: State the option

I was hooked on The Prey series by John Sandford from the very first book, Rules of Prey. The main character, Lucas Davenport, is a police officer who is tough, brilliant and surrounded by some memorable characters.

Option 1: The Titles
The newest entry is #35 in the main series. There are two spinoff series, but for this task we will focus on the Lucas Davenport books which all have “Prey” in the title. Read a book with one of these words from the series in the title (subtitle excluded). Words must be exact. No variations.
Rules, Shadow, Eyes, Silent, Winter, Night, Mind, Sudden, Secret, Certain, Easy, Chosen, Mortal, Naked, Hidden, Broken, Invisible, Phantom, Wicked, Storm, Buried, Stolen, Silken, Field, Gathering, Extreme, Golden, Twisted, Neon, Masked, Ocean, Righteous, Judgment, Toxic, Lethal

Option 2: The Setting
This series takes place in Minnesota so for this task, read a book set at least 75% in Minnesota.
Required: If the setting is not obvious from the Goodreads Main Page, provide a reference.

Option 3: The Author
John Sandford is a pseudonym for the author who was born John Roswell Camp. Read a book written using a pseudonym. The pseudonym must be a single author, so no writing teams. J. D. Robb (pseudonym for Nora Roberts) works; Nicci French (pseudonym for Nicci Gerrard and Sean French) does not.

Rule Changes (83 new)

21757 We are looking into changing a few things in in the default rules regarding page numbers.

After watching the discussion in regards to page number accuracy and having the correct editions, this is what the mods have come with up.

1) Removing the requirement for verification of length on e-books that do not have a physical copy. If the page number is listed on the Goodreads main page for the e-book and it satisfies the minimum page count for books.

If the e-book has no physical copy and does not list the page number, it will still need to be verified for length.

We would like to implement this change due the fact that page numbers for e-books seem to becoming more accurate.

2) For Page number tasks. We want to implement using a standard for the page count instead of the version we read. Since it is often difficult to know the version you getting or the page count is listed wrong, we will now use:

The paperback with the highest rating. We thing using the paperback in this situation is better since more books have paperback than MMPB. If there is no paperback, then we will use the hardcover.

E-books with no physical copy will still be excluded from page number tasks.

Before we make the changes permanent, we wanted to get the general consensus and to give a heads up.
