Things like this always remind me just how wrong GK Chesterton was when he said "When people stop believing in god they will believe in anything." No, belief in one set of irrational crap seems to make people more prone to accepting any irrational crap.

Hey there
hope all is right with you. I'd be happy to share responsibilities, if you'd have me.

Easily done, no worries :D

OK, I admit it - I got drawn in to the 'discussion', but have now absented myself and will not be foolish enough to engage further with the troll.

Well, Catholics have got to turn somewhere since children are now so suspicious around them.
ZING!

Shanna wrote: "There is a saying though that there are none so blind as they that will not see. "Which, ironically enough, is often credited (wrongly) as biblical.
Superb vid, btw. Ta :D

Words almost fail me. This kind of willful stupidity and sick mindedness leaves me flabbergasted.

I think argument may be wasted, Shanna. If the poster considers coral reefs a product of intelligence rather than a blind process. Is the growth of a crystal like those in the Mexico or the Carlsbad Caverns produced by intelligence? I suspect he would say it is, while there is evidence that they are in fact caused by 'nothing more' than a chemical process.
I'd personally refuse to argue with such a rude individual. He demands you supply evidence but offers none himself. I think my temper would get the better of me!
And of course, if god made it all, does he have an answer to "but what intelligence made god?" Oh wait, god is eternal, yada yada yada

I confess I tried reading it but the legalese began to put me to sleep. Somewhere I did read that the bill also gives explicit permission for US forces to seize anyone of any nationality anywhere in the world, if they are deemed to be a threat. It does piss me off that the US keeps doing this (I believe elsewhere US law states that if a crime in any foreign territory involves a US citizen it falls under US jurisdiction) despite the fact THIS IS BLATANTLY AGAINST INTERNATIONAL LAW.

That was me - although Hazel and I are often confused.
Not with each other, we're just often confused...

It's like that bit in
American Gods (if you haven't read it, please do!) where Odin is talking to the goddess Eostre, who has a huge amount of power because so many people worship her every spring, even though they don't realise it.

ooh, you cynic... ;D

Good news on this, for the moment - it looks like the pressure has made them postpone the measures

Welcome to your first atheist cristmas, Cody!
Religion never really featured in my christmas, although my dad is supposedly catholic. There was a bit of it at school, but it was fairly half-hearted. I've been an atheist since i was nine or ten, but christmas has always been about family and friends. When I had a family of my own crimble morning was one of my most treasured times.
The knowledge that a midwinter festival is all but universal (whether on a specific date or as a movable feast) is quite comforting, and there is definitely something joyful in knowing that millions of other people are 'celebrating' around the same time. I avoided using the word christmas for a long time (i still prefer crimble!) and there is certainly a problem with the cultural imperialism of assuming everybody celebrates it (the common childhood issue of asking your first friend from a jewish or muslim family what they're getting for christmas), but i do think that the holiday has been largely denatured and the religious are right in fearing that most people have lost the(ir) meaning of christmas.
