2072 My housemate pointed out the TV series to me yesterday, hoping to catch it on the iPlayer. I may have to check out the book, too.

cheers!
2072 This lass is fast becoming an secularist icon, and the christians aren't coming out looking very good at all.

2072 This is the big message his pop-eye-ness is pushing recently, gelling the the US religious right's claims of 'anti-religious bigotry'. I hope enough people can just see it for the defensive bleating it is, especially in the case of Uncle Joe "hide the evidence" Ratzinger.

2072 I believe so, Madge. She's one of these people whose sense of entitlement and righteousness is so overwhelming that she'll either end up ruling the world or, more likely, come a serious cropper.

2072 Nadine Dorries is such a hateful creature. Amazingly, she's never been shy about her fundie leanings, and yet she still somehow got elected and seems to have quite a bit of clout!

No thanks, I'd rather not. I don't mind men in a dress, but I draw the line at the pope. ;-)"

He did go a bit weird in later life, but early on he worked as a debunker.

If any schools try to flout the law, I wait to see the furore when they are reported and it comes to court.

After all, the his popness is infallible. Is that the word I'm looking for?

Oh no, it's stupid.

(just noticed the link address is ...us-pope-gay-id... which sounds like a MUCH more interesting story!)

2072 The man who killed Pakistani MP Salman Taseer for his 'blasphemy' is considered by many a hero.

I've actually seen a few studies that suggest the school has little or nothing to do with academic achievement, and the home and general social environment are far more important.

2072 I like that joke - but my reaction was "ouch!" rather than laughter. I enjoyed that it substituted one silly tradition for another.

Paul, I had exactly the same issue with my dad when I refused to get my son, Michael, baptised. My dad kept bringing it up, and I'd say that if Michael chose to do that when he was old enough that was his choice. Eventually, my dad tried his trump card: if, god forbid, something terrible happened I wouldn't want to risk sending Michael to hell on the off-chance?

I don't think I've ever been more angry in my life. Cold, hard anger. I told my father that if his god would condemn an innocent to eternal torment because he hadn't had water sprinkled on him, his god could get fucked. And if he thought such a being was worth worshipping he was an idiot.

It was never mentioned again.

edit:
Michael is now 20, and a pretty well adjusted atheist.
