2072 The CoE's knickers are always in a twist; i think it's their version of the spiky garter that the Opus Dei weirdos wear...

2072 Well, how would entirely failing to recognise the existence of women in its media relegate them to a lower status...
2072 i assume Alex is simply referring to the idea that many vehemently anti-gay people are themselves repressing the very same feelings.
2072 It's this kind of idiot that actually gets me most angry, someone who couches their hatred in (what they seem to believe is) such reasonable, rational terms. Homosexuality is the result of being abused as a child? Does he actually believe that? He knows how hard it must be to be gay. What a sanctimonious fuckwit.

2072 i don't, i was trying to find it again and failed, so am also eager if anyone can unearth the source.

i've also extended it for my Facebook status:

One head engaged in thought is better than a million bent in prayer

Two hands at work are more effective than a million clasped in prayer

Three tongues in conversation are more useful than a million uttering prayers

The US have frequently given military and financial aid to some pretty horrific despots, as long as they deemed them to be of the right political leaning. They've often been quite open about the situation, although usually denied the dictatorial nature of their buddies. While this was especially the case during the cold war, it continues to the present day. There was a recent piece in the Wall Street Journal which defended this by claiming that US supported dictators were "less evil" than leftist dictators.

2072 I confess i don't especially like the AV system, but will be voting for it A) because it will annoy the tories if it gets through (something i go out of my way to do whenever possible) and B) because a low yes vote will likely mean no change for the foreseeable future, while a win or or a close vote will hopefully leave the door open for future changes.

2072 While I think that's a valid point, Andreea, I don't think it's the main issue. All this is faffing around rearranging the deckchairs, caused by worries over the falling rates of turn out at elections (still no where near as low as in the US, I hasten to add). Not that most governments actually care how many people vote for them as long as they get elected, but the worry is that increasingly a large number of the electorate don't recognise the right of the government to govern, which obviously makes it harder to do so.

Personally, i think most of the problems could be fixed with the sort of localised democratic structures they have in Germany (actual local power and accountability!) and the compulsory voting in effect in Australia and New Zealand (with obviously a 'non of the above' option to actively abstain - although the thought of this terrifies most British politicians; they imagine complete chaos would ensure if a majority of people voted for 'non of the above'!)
