I just remembered that I do in fact have at least one unread book on Tarawa, so there might be a change in my theme book.
Bloody Tarawa by Eric; Lane John E. Hammel
I think "One Square Mile of Hell: The Battle for Tarawa" has been one of the best books that I've read on the battle. Highly recommended. Another excellent account is "Utmost Savagery: The Three Days of Tarawa" by Joseph H. Alexander.

My theme book for this month will be this book covering one of the Australian campaigns; "D-Day New Guinea: The extraordinary story of the battle for Lae and the greatest combined airborne and amphibious operation of the Pacific War" by Phillip Bradley.

Hi folks, The October theme read page is open and ready for discussion. I have broadened the theme to cover any Pacific War battle that occurred during 1943:

The October 2023 theme read is any book or books, which can include a novel, that covers the Battle of Tarawa or any other Pacific War battle (land, air or sea) that took place during 1943.
"Battle of the Bulge: Then and Now" by Jean-Paul Pallud is a classic and quite a substantial book (HB), at $1.99 its a steal!
I hope your move goes smoothly Perato. Good to hear you are enjoying Tooze's "Wages of Destruction", it does sound like a pretty interesting book.
An October release that may interest a few group members. After reading his "The Blood Telegram: Nixon, Kissinger, and a Forgotten Genocide" I will be on the lookout for a copy of this new book:
Judgment at Tokyo: World War II on Trial and the Making of Modern Asia by Gary J. Bass

That's a hell of a lot of work for such a small number of men and resources!

Check out this book on the subject:
Dog Company: The Boys of Pointe du Hoc--the Rangers Who Accomplished D-Day's Toughest Mission and Led the Way across Europe by Patrick K. O'Donnell
Manray9 wrote: "Tonight I’ve started Captain Edward Ellsberg’s No Banners, No Bugles. It is the second in the trilogy of memoirs of his involvement in naval salvage operations in WW II"That sounds like a pretty interesting book, MR9, and on a little written about subject. I hope you enjoy it.
