201765 Amy said: Having to look up the odd word here and there is OK, but having a book incessantly point out my lack of vocabulary is annoying.

I agree and I don't think mine are in that category. Hope not anyway! I just try for the word with the right shade of meaning which I hope conveys the subtleties of feeling that we all go through.

Thanks Ashleigh. I remember now! Mine usually comes out with a writing grade of between 8-10. I've been using Autocrit.

201765 Surely that's not from a real book? Is the blogger just having fun with overdoing it?

It's all very well saying we should choose the simplest word but I like to use the word that exactly expresses what I mean. It came from spending my life saying things I didn't quite mean and then having to put up with not really showing the real me, that is the me that is inside and not the me that escapes through lack of being able to think of the right word.

Do you think that could qualify as being pale purple prose!

201765 Nice one! I like the last bit.

201765 So long as the bait is true, I think it is a great idea - is it not what we do for our own books in our blurbs and our own marketing where we are asked to give a description of our books in 50 words or less?

There's usually enough in books to pick out interesting themes even if it isn't the author's intended main theme.

Go for it!

But it must be true. I'd be outraged if it wasn't.

As for why we're not reading so much, for myself I can answer that it is because I am so busy learning, writing and marketing. I managed 15 minutes reading last night before my eyes closed - at one stage I closed the tired eye and read with the duff eye with the Kindle font huge.
201765 Ah...

A review site gave my book a review and I only found out when Googling my name (as it's wise to do sometimes) and I've put that review in the editorial part.
201765 Good luck, Marie. I'll look out for your ad.

This Xpresso thing - um, does Amazon allow the reviews?

201765 I've been wondering if I should stop using so many commas as lots of people say they are unnecessary and stop the flow. I've changed my mind!
201765 Yes! It does! But I am in the same boat as you in that, amazingly, I have used this site before and forgotten all about it. I wonder why we both forgot? Perhaps no sales?

Anyway, let's try and get them some action.

If you're a UK writer, please take a look, advertise (free) and sign up and please, please, please, everyone put this site on Facebook or whatever and get readers to sign up for it.

Go, go, go!

They only take free books, Marie, sob, sob. I prefer to do the 'reduced to 0.99' option. I found I got poor reviews in the US with the first freebie I tried. I'm too scared to go for another freebie. Maybe I'll petition Book Angel to take discounted books! Alex? Join me in this?
201765 I wish I could find other UK sites, Alex. Everywhere I go I ask if anyone knows of any. If I do find any, I'll let you know. Nag me now and again, just in case I forget who I'm supposed to tell, but I've been looking for years!

I keep thinking that the UK must be a business opportunity for someone - but it isn't me.
201765 I have a Kindle Countdown Deal on at the moment and I find it very difficult to find advertising sites for the UK market. The only one I know of is www.bookhippo.uk and it has produced 12 sales in the UK today as at 8 p.m. and it is free. It sends out an excellent daily newsletter.

201765 Hello Mandy, and welcome from another newcomer.

201765 Thanks Alex. I've taken a quick peep. Looks good and a big thank you to those of you who have set this all up.

201765 Ooh hello! Nice to see you too. I've noticed a few names I recognize.

I'll probably be a bit slow getting involved, I'm catching up after being out of things for a couple of months.

201765 Penni/Elina - this is a useful service!
