I agree with you Groovy. I watched an interview with a romance author where she said at the height of self-publishing back in 2011, making money was way easier, then KU came along a little later and she did it for a couple months then dropped it because she wasn't making money like she used to. When she did that some of her fans were like "I'm used to getting your books free, im not paying 4.99 for a book!" (Although they had no issues with it before.) Her response was, "thats fine, then you wont read my books". Ha! I think these programs are good for a short period of time but it seems readers gets used to being handed things knowing the importance of reviews and kind of hold authors hostage if they dare to ask for fair pay for their hard work. It's a slippery slope i tell ya.
