The themes are picked for the year by the staff. Then members throw out suggestions each month starting on the 15th and we vote on what the selection of the month will be.

193869 New year. new list of comics I read last week.

War on Terror Godkillers by Mark Sable War on Terror: Godkillers ★★★
A cool idea about ISIS using mythological creatures in warfare that ultimately reaches too close to the sun for a 5 issue series.

Bad Reception by Juan Doe Bad Reception ★★
The queen of social media and her fiancee get married on a remote island where they decide to take everyone's phone away. Of course, now that everyone is stuck on the island, a killer starts murdering everyone in the reverse order of their social media presence.

Kill a Man by Steve Orlando Kill a Man ★★★
Creed if Michael B. Jordan was gay.

Belle - Oath of Thorns #1 by Dave Franchini Belle: Oath of Thorns ★★★
Beauty and the Beast reimagined as superheroes.

Rai (2019) Book 2 by Dan Abnett Rai (2019) Book 2 ★★★★
The best comic Valiant is currently publishing.

The Ballad of Yaya Book 7 The Trap by Jean-Marie Omont The Ballad of Yaya Book 7: The Trap ★★★★
Part Manga, Part Tintin. Yaya gets amnesia and goes off with her kidnapper to Hong Kong.

Le retour (La balade de Yaya, #8) by Jean-Marie Omont The Ballad of Yaya Book 8: The Return ★★★★
This Manga influenced French comic is strangely enthralling.

The Ballad of Yaya Book 9 Sonata by Jean-Marie Omont The Ballad of Yaya Book 9: Sonata ★★★
Yaya's story comes to a close even though there's not much closure.

CULLEN BUNN OMNIBUS ALL MY LITTLE DEMONS An AfterShock Library of Tales by Cullen Bunn CULLEN BUNN OMNIBUS ALL MY LITTLE DEMONS: An AfterShock Library of Tales ★★★
A massive tome of most of Cullen Bunn's work at Aftershock.

The Cimmerian Vol. 1 by Jean-David Morvan The Cimmerian Vol. 1 ★★★
Two adaptations of Conan stories. One fantastic, one awful.

The Adoption by Zidrou The Adoption ★★★★
A story both heartwarming and gutwrenching.

Brothers Dracul Vol. 1 Blood of the Dragon by Cullen Bunn Brothers Dracul Vol. 1: Blood of the Dragon ★★★
An origin story for Vlad the Impaler.

Knights Temporal, Vol. 1 by Cullen Bunn Knights Temporal, Vol. 1 ★★
This is a great concept with poor execution. A knight is scattered across multiple times because "reasons". Nothing is explained.

Witch Hammer (Her Infernal Descent) by Cullen Bunn Witch Hammer ★★★★
A tale of revenge as a goat headed person tracks down and murders every member of a demonic cult. Short and pretty damn sweet.

Aliens Omnibus, Vol. 2 by John Arcudi Aliens Omnibus, Vol. 2 ★★★
A collection of three different series set in the Aliens universe.

The Absolute Sandman, Volume Three by Neil Gaiman The Absolute Sandman, Volume Three ★★★★★
Collects the back half of Fables & Reflections, Brief Lives and Worlds' End. These oversized Absolute volumes are fantastic.

The Green Lantern Season Two, Vol. 1 by Grant Morrison The Green Lantern: Season Two, Vol. 1 ★★
I'm not a fan of Morrison's Green Lantern at all. He needs to release annotated editions just to explain what the hell is going on.

Star Wars The Rise of Kylo Ren by Charles Soule Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren ★★★★
Finally, Disney has released something that actually fills in a bit of the huge gap between the trilogies.

Spider-Man & Venom Double Trouble by Mariko Tamaki Spider-Man & Venom: Double Trouble ★★
A cartoonish comic whre Spider-Man and Venom are roommates. Ugh.

DC's Very Merry Multiverse #1 by Tom King DC's Very Merry Multiverse #1 ★★★
The holidays throughout the Multiverse.

Goodnight Paradise by Joshua Dysart Goodnight Paradise ★★★
A social justice commentary about Venice Beach disguised as a murder mystery. Joshua Dysart REALLY hates Snapchat.
Dec 30, 2020 05:29AM

193869 I had my problems with Prince of Cats as well. Once you bring that Shakespearian dialogue out, my brain goes numb.
Dec 29, 2020 07:45PM

193869 Ed wrote: "'ve recently read the complete series Harrow County and Fatale. I very much enjoyed both even though horror isn't among my favorite genres."

Sixth Gun and Bone Parish are too other very good Cullen Bunn books.

193869 Erin wrote: "I can't get over how prolific you are! Very impressive. I also really like the way you structure your posts, I want to try it too! :)."

Thanks Erin!

Erin wrote: "Babyteeth, Vol. 1: Born - can't wait to sink my teeth (pun half-intended) into more of this creepy Anti-Christ comic!"

Ooh! Babyteeth! One of my favorite comics of the last few years and IMO Donny Cates's best work.

Erin wrote: "Goldie Vance Vol. 1 - not an earth-shaking work of great importance or anything, but I totally loved this fast-paced cutesy detective story.!"

I really like these cutesy LGBTQ+ mysteries. The whole series is fun.
Dec 28, 2020 11:57AM

193869 Last week's light reading.

Theatre of the Wind (Nanami #1) by Éric Corbeyran Nanami ★★
The Neverending Story for bored teenagers.

Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things (Courtney Crumrin, #1) by Ted Naifeh Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things ★★★★
Comics for Goth preteens in the vein of Tim Burton or Jhonen Vasquez.

Spell on Wheels, Vol. 2 Just to Get to You by Kate Leth Spell on Wheels, Vol. 2: Just to Get to You ★★★
Thelma & Louise with witches.

Alter Nation by Tim Seeley Alter Nation ★★
A crappy, toy tie-in comic.

Alien The Original Screenplay #1 by Cristiano Seixas Alien: The Original Screenplay ★★★
A new comic based on the original screenplay of the film.

The Butcher of Paris #1 by Stephanie Phillips The Butcher of Paris ★★★
A true crime comic about a serial killer operating in Paris at the end of World War II.

Critical Role Vox Machina Origins Library Edition Series I & II Collection by Matthew Mercer Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins Library Edition ★★★★★
This was great. A fantasy adventure with lots of hijinks and humor.

The Neil Gaiman Library Volume 2 by Neil Gaiman The Neil Gaiman Library Volume 2 ★★★★
A bunch of Neil Gaiman's short stories brought to life by some wonderful artists.

Crone by Dennis Culver Crone ★★★
A story about Red Sonja if she got old.

Paying the Land by Joe Sacco Paying the Land ★★★★
A documentary style graphic novel about the indigenous people of Canada.

The Sacrifice of Darkness by Roxane Gay The Sacrifice of Darkness ★★
A romance set in a coal mining town with the occasional spaceship available for snuffing out the sun. It's almost comical how bad the world building and science is in this book.

Urban Legendz by Paul Downs Urban Legendz ★★★
Tries to be The Goonies set in Brooklyn.

HBO MAX Digital Comic (2020) #1 by Ivan Cohen HBO MAX Digital Comic ★★
In each of these 10 page teasers, a dog gives someone superpowers. I have no idea what that has to do with HBO Max but there are some decent artists involved.

HBO Max/Raised by Wolves (2020-) #1 by Aaron Guzikowski HBO Max/Raised by Wolves (2020-) #1
This was incomprehensible as a teaser for the new HBO show.

Black Dahlia by Rick Geary Black Dahlia ★★★
Rick Geary presents a very well researched look into the death of Elizabeth Short in another of his true crime tales.

The Sign of Darkness (The Black Moon Chronicles, #1) by François Froideval The Sign of Darkness (The Black Moon Chronicles #1) ★★
I read in other reviews that this originally started as a Greyhawk campaign and it shows. Those early adventures were over the top, gory and simple fantasy.

Promethea, Vol. 5 by Alan Moore Promethea, Vol. 5 ★★
Promethea brings about the Apocalypse. This series has been one big acid trip. That by no means ends here. The epilogue is Moore at his most Alan Moorian with his head completely up his own ass. It's nonstop esoteric mumbo-jumbo bullshit.

Batman/Huntress Cry for Blood by Greg Rucka Batman/Huntress: Cry for Blood ★★★★
Greg Rucka takes a Godfather approach to Huntress.

The 7 Deadly Sins by Tze Chun The 7 Deadly Sins ★★
This is your standard Western trope of criminals trying to redeem themselves, even though it's iffy if they are actually helping anyone. The story isn't very good and the art is worse.

Sara by Garth Ennis Sara ★★★★★
This is my graphic novel of the year. Sara is about a squad of female snipers working in the Russian theater of WWII. Garth Ennis and Steve Epting knocked it out of the park.

The Precinct A Steampunk Adventure by Frank J. Barbiere The Precinct: A Steampunk Adventure ★★
A by the numbers murder mystery set in a steampunk world.

Justice League Vengeance is Thine by Robert Venditti Justice League: Vengeance is Thine ★★★
Venditti's short time on the Justice League is fine if nothing special.

Wellington by Aaron Mahnke Wellington ★★★
The Duke of Wellington gets involved is a supernatural murder-mystery.

193869 All Quiet on the Western Front by Wayne Vansant All Quiet on the Western Front ★★★
A dour and depressing adaptation of the classic dour and depressing novel.

Wildfire Volume 1 by Matt Hawkins Wildfire: Volume 1 ★★
n extremely heavy-handed story about the evils of genetically modified crops destroying L.A.

Lois Lane Enemy of the People by Greg Rucka Lois Lane: Enemy of the People ★★★
Good characterization can't save an unfocused story.

American Terrorist by Tyler Chin-Tanner American Terrorist ★★★
The book makes some solid points and I agree with quite a bit of it but it all feels very contrived and one-sided.

Norse Mythology, Volume 1 by Neil Gaiman Norse Mythology, Volume 1 ★★★★
Long time Neil Gaiman collaborator, P. Craig Russell, has brought in a murder's row of fantastic artists to breathe life into Gaiman's retelling of Norse mythology.

The Wizard's Tale by Kurt Busiek The Wizard's Tale ★★★★★
This is the story of an evil wizard from a line of evil wizards who really doesn't want to be evil.

Whispers by Joshua Luna Whispers ★★
This was...strange. It's about a germaphobe who begins to astral project.

Vampirella/Army of Darkness by Mark Rahner Vampirella/Army of Darkness ★★
Rahner got Ash spot on. But that story, yikes! It's not good.

The Shield, Vol. 1 Daughter of the Revolution by Adam Christopher The Shield, Vol. 1: Daughter of the Revolution ★★
An outline of a cool story of an immortal Captain America clone and some kind of demon she's fighting.

The Victories Volume 1 Touched by Michael Avon Oeming The Victories Volume 1: Touched ★★★★
This could almost be seen as a spinoff of Powers where it focuses on a team of heroes instead of Walker and Pilgrim investigating powers related murders.

Aliens Omnibus, Vol. 1 by Mark Verheiden Aliens Omnibus, Vol. 1 ★★★★
The first 3 Aliens miniseries from Dark Horse. They were written before Aliens 3 came out so Newt and Hicks are still alive.

Zana (Carthago Adventures #5) by Christophe Bec Carthago Adventures Vol. 1: Zana ★★★★
Carthago Adventures tell untold stories of the rich old man from Carthago. He's a cryptozoic hunter. In this, he's searching for Neanderthals in Russia.

Carthago Adventures Vol. 2 Bluff Creek by Christophe Bec Carthago Adventures Vol. 2: Bluff Creek ★★★
Mr. Feiersinger and London Donovan hunt for sasquatch in Northern California in the 80's.

Carthago Adventures Vol. 3 Chipekwe by Christophe Bec Carthago Adventures Vol. 3: Chipekwe ★★★★
London Donavan and his effectric billionaire boss look into the legend of the Loch Ness Monster before heading to Africa in search of a dinosaur.

Carthago Adventures Vol. 4 Aipaloovik by Christophe Bec Carthago Adventures Vol. 4: Aipaloovik ★★★★
Cryptozoic hunter London Donovan returns to his home in Alaska and fights a Leviathan.

The True Death of Billy the Kid by Rick Geary True Death of Billy the Kid ★★★
This feels like a fleshed out version of a story that would have appeared in one of those Big Book of series that Paradox Press published in the 90's.

Earthlight manga volume 1 by Stuart Moore Earthlight Vol. 1 ★★
This reminded me of The 100. It's teenage brats being teenagers in space, doing really dangerous and stupid things.

Spellbound - Season 1 Book I (Sortilèges - Cycle 1) by Jean Dufaux Spellbound - Season 1: Book I ★★★
An overly complicated fantasy story, some of which is frustratingly not explained (like why the Queen hates her daughter).

The Tea Dragon Society (Tea Dragon, #1) by Katie O'Neill The Tea Dragon Society ★★★★
This was all about the cutesy art carrying this graphic novel for middle schoolers.

193869 Last week's adventures in comics.

Alien vs. Predator Thicker Than Blood by Jeremy Barlow Alien vs. Predator: Thicker Than Blood ★★★★
A brother and sister are trapped on a spaceship with 2 Predators and an Alien.

Criminal Macabre The Big Bleed Out by Steve Niles Criminal Macabre: The Big Bleed Out ★★★
Cal McDonald, Monster PI falls in love with a vampire while his zombie partner encounters a sewer ape.

Predator Hunters III by Chris Warner Predator: Hunters III ★★★
A bunch of survivors from previous Predator comics hunt Predators.

Bang! by Matt Kindt Bang! ★★★
A meta take on various hero archetypes from pulp novels.

Interpol - Volume 1 Mexico - La Muerte by Philippe Thirault Interpol - Volume 1: Mexico - La Muerte ★★
A private eye and an Interpol agent hunt for a serial killer decapitating women in Mexico City.

The First Assassin (Cassio #1) by Stephen Desberg The First Assassin (Cassio #1) ★★
Way too much raping for me in this tale set in Roman times.

Batman in the Eighties by Robert Greenberger Batman in the Eighties ★★★★
Some solid Batman stories from some of the best writers and artists of the eighties.

The X-Files Origins by Jody Houser The X-Files: Origins ★★
The Hardy Boys / Nancy Drew version of the X-Files. Fox and Dana investigate two different incidents 3 years apart when they were children.

X-Files Origins, Vol. 2 Dog Days of Summer by Jody Houser X-Files: Origins, Vol. 2: Dog Days of Summer ★★
Tries to be a Stranger Things version of the X-Files with Mulder and Scully as children, but the story goes nowhere.

Outcast, Vol. 7 The Darkness Grows by Robert Kirkman Outcast, Vol. 7: The Darkness Grows ★★★
Kirkman is really milking the series at this point.

Count Crowley Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter by David Dastmalchian Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter ★★★★
An ode to the midnight creature features of the past. Add in lots of poor choices and the fact those monsters from the movies are real and you have Count Crowley.

Promethea, Vol. 4 by Alan Moore Promethea, Vol. 4 ★★★★
Alan Moore (along with Sophie and Barbara) ends his acid trip through the Immateria.

Monet Itinerant of Light by Salva Rubio Monet: Itinerant of Light ★★★
The life of Oscar Monet told in art resembling his work of the time period.

Plastic Man Rubber Banded - The Deluxe Edition by Kyle Baker Plastic Man: Rubber Banded - The Deluxe Edition ★★★★
Kyle Baker channels the energy and zaniness of the Plastic Man Adventure Hours cartoon.

Mass Effect, Volume 1 Redemption by Mac Walters Mass Effect, Volume 1: Redemption ★★★
A decent little story about Liara going after Commander Shepard's body. Provides as a nice lead in to Mass Effect 2.

The City of Shifting Waters (Valérian and Laureline, #1) by Pierre Christin The City of Shifting Waters (Valérian and Laureline, #1) ★★★
Valerian and Laureline travel back to a 1986 that has been ravaged by ecological disasters to recover a fugitive from their time period.

Bizenghast, Volume 1 (Bizenghast, #1) by M. Alice LeGrow Bizenghast, Volume 1 ★★★
If you like Gothic manga with big eyes, you'll probably enjoy this.

Hedy Lamarr An Incredible Life by William Roy Hedy Lamarr: An Incredible Life ★★★★
In addition to being an actress, Hedy was an inventor. Her patent on frequency hopping became the basis for wireless technology.

Locke & Key/Sandman Hell & Gone #0 by Joe Hill Locke & Key/Sandman: Hell & Gone #0 ★★★
The 2 stories are worth 5 stars but this is just a reprint of Locke & Key: Open the Moon and Sandman #1.

The Question The Deaths of Vic Sage by Jeff Lemire The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage ★★★★
Always good to see a new Question comic.

Bigby Bear Vol.1 by Philippe Coudray Bigby Bear Vol.1 ★★
Droll comic strip about an artistic bear and a rabbit.

The Kill Lock #1 by Livio Ramondelli The Kill Lock ★★★★
Four banished robots have received the Kill Lock, if one of them die, they all die. It was really good.

193869 Last week's adventures in comics.

Tomorrow by Peter Milligan Tomorrow ★★
Peter Milligan's attempt at writing The Stand but dumb.

Hidden Society by Rafael Scavone Hidden Society ★★★
A new entry in the hidden magic society category.

Liberty and Justice for All A Marvel Xavier's Institute Novel by Carrie Harris Liberty and Justice for All: A Marvel: Xavier's Institute Novel ★★★
A prose novel about two of the newest X-Men (Triage and Tempus) teaming up with Sabertooth.

Baboon! by Pau Baboon ★★★★
A wordless graphic novel about a baboon raised by a leopard. Pau packs a ton of emotion into his art.

The Lost Adventures and Team Avatar Tales (Avatar The Last Airbender) by Gene Luen Yang The Lost Adventures and Team Avatar Tales (Avatar: The Last Airbender) ★★★
Some just OK short stories taking place during the show.

Remina by Junji Ito Remina ★★
Ego the Living Planet comes to Earth and the whole world loses its collective mind.

Promethea, Vol. 3 by Alan Moore Promethea, Vol. 3 ★★★★
Sophie and the previous Promethia, Barbara, take a trippy road trip into the higher consciousness of the Immateria while Stacia becomes the new Promethea and protects Earth.

Something is Killing the Children, Vol. 2 by James Tynion IV Something is Killing the Children, Vol. 2 ★★★★★
Each issue amps up the tension as things get worse and worse. Now there's 5 little monsters running around hungry to kill more children.

Wolverine by Benjamin Percy, Vol. 1 by Benjamin Percy Wolverine by Benjamin Percy, Vol. 1 ★★★★
Wolverine takes on the Flower Cartel and Vampire Nation.

Underworld Unleashed The 25th Anniversary Edition by Mark Waid Underworld Unleashed: The 25th Anniversary Edition ★★★
Underworld Unleashed was a great idea. You have all these villains (and a few heroes) making faustian bargains with the devil.

The Flash, Vol. 13 Rogues Reign by Joshua Williamson The Flash, Vol. 13: Rogues Reign ★★★
In this Year of the Villain tie in, Apex Lex amps up the Rogues and they are running Central City.

Jennifer Blood First Blood by Michael Carroll Jennifer Blood: First Blood ★★
Dynamite is milking the series at this point. It didn't really add much of anything to the Jennifer Blood story and frankly most of it was boring.

James Bond Case Files by Kieron Gillen James Bond: Case Files ★★★★
Four stand alone tales set in the James Bond universe, two with James Bond, one with Moneypenny, and one with M.

Hellblazer, Volume 7 Tainted Love by Garth Ennis Hellblazer, Volume 7: Tainted Love ★★★★★
With Steve Dillon in tow, this book really kicks it into high gear.

Tales from the Dark Multiverse: War of the Gods
Nov 30, 2020 10:32AM

193869 Last 2 week's of comic book reading.

The Head of Mimir ★★★★
Part Norse mythology / part Marvel's Asgard. A prose tale of young Heimdall and Sif.

The Times I Knew I Was Gay ★★
An illustrated memoir about a young woman coming to grips with her sexuality.

Starship Down ★★
An ancient spaceship is found frozen in the Siberian ice.

Undone by Blood ★★★
Two Westerns told alternating back and forth. One traditional, the other of a young woman looking for revenge for her murdered family in 1970's Arizona.

Dark Ark: After the Flood Vol. 1 ★★
The premise of a 2nd ark full of monsters in addition to Noah's is a good one but the creative team is milking it now.

Reckless ★★★★★
Brubaker and Phillips's ode to the pulp novels of the 60's.

Savor ★★★
Iron Chef crossed with kung fu movies.

Gunland Volume 2: Tribe ★★★★★
A crazy weird Western in the best way with outlaws riding dinosaurs.

Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection Vol. 25: Maximum Carnage ★★★
Carnage starts his own Manson family and runs around Manhattan murdering hundreds of people while Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends argue about if they should kill Carnage or not while he repeatedly gets away.

Uncanny: Season Two ★★★★
Andy Diggle's version of Heroes mixed in with Thief of Thieves

Witchblade/Red Sonja ★★★★
Red Sonja and Sara are both characterized correctly and I think fans of either character will enjoy this.

Hellblazer, Volume 6: Bloodlines ★★★★★
I'm so glad Garth Ennis's Hellblazer run is still as amazing to me now as it was back when I originally read it in the 90's.

Bunker - Volume 1 - Forbidden Borders ★★★
This is the story of soldiers sitting on a DMZ at the top of a mountain range. Somehow there are also cave men and monsters involved but it's not clear how they fit in.

What If? Mirror Mirror ★★★
Some decent What If's mixed in with more Elseworlds type stories that didn't really work. When the stories were a riff on the actual characters instead of just plopping them in a different time period they worked well.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Volume 1: Change is Constant ★★★★
Eastman returns to plot the Turtles in a reboot of the series. The origin has been redone.

Supergirl Vol. 3: Infectious ★★
DC's events really damage this last volume. You need to read Event Leviathan and Batman/Superman Volume 1: Who are the Secret Six? to even have a clue to what's going on.

Bitter Root, Vol. 1: Family Business ★★★★
Taking place during the Harlem Renaissance, Bitter Root is the story of the Sangerye Clan. The family has rooted out and cured Jinroo for generations. Jinroo are racists so filled with hate that they actually become monsters.

Hard Time: The Complete Series ★★★
The story of a teenager sent to prison for 50 years after being involved in a Columbine-style shooting. While in prison, he discovers he has powers to astral project.

Girl
Simone is a British teenager living a shitty life with a shitty family in the shitty projects with a vivid imagination. So vivid, in fact, that as the reader you have no idea what's real and what's imagined.

Daredevil by Chip Zdarsky, Vol. 3: Through Hell ★★★★★
Zdarsky continues to build Matt Murdock back up now that he tore him down in the previous two volumes.

Daredevil by Chip Zdarsky, Vol. 4: End of Hell ★★★★★
I wasn't aware of how much of a expert juggler Zdarsky was until this Daredevil run. He masterfully balances multiple plot threads, weaving characters in and out, creating this masterpiece run on a character known for its masterful runs.

Rust Vol. 4: Soul in the Machine ★★★★
I love the sepia toned art and retro futuristic stylings of this book.

X-Force by Benjamin Percy, Vol. 2 ★★★
While I'm still enjoying this, it's not much of a team book. It mainly alternates focusing on Domino, Colossus, and Wolverine from issue to issue with Beast in the background acting shady.

New Mutants by Ed Brisson, Vol. 1 ★★★
Ed Brisson turns his version of the New Mutants into a team that goes out into the world and helps mutants who haven't come to Krakoa.

Hellions by Zeb Wells, Vol. 1 ★★★★★
This is my favorite of the 2nd wave of the Dawn of X books. Suicide Squad for the X-Men.

Cable by Gerry Duggan, Vol. 1 ★★★
Having Cable date all five Cuckoos at once, kidnapped mutant babies, and mutant worshipping cults seem like enough to juggle without the Spaceknights on top of it all.

Mirka Andolfo's Un/Sacred Vol 1
A horny devil and a doe-eyed, big boobed, naive angel dating. He wants to have sex and she wants to wait until they get married. Most of the book is one page strips where the joke is the same every time.

Alienated ★★★★
Three outcast teenagers come across an alien in the woods that gives them powers. If this sounds like Chronicle, that's because it is.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Vol. 4 ★★
After a great start, this series has tanked very quickly. David Lopez's art was fugly but at least you could tell who the characters were.

Static Shock has been out of print for years. Icon or Hardware would be easier for people to find. Both are on Hoopla and Comixology even though they are out of physical print as well.
Nov 16, 2020 02:18PM

193869 Last week's comic book adventures.

Domino: Strays ★★
A prose novel set in the Marvel universe.

Blade of the Immortal Deluxe Volume 1 ★★★
A famous Manga that didn't live up to its hype.

The World of Black Hammer: Library Edition, Volume 1 ★★★★★
Two of the best expansions of Jeff Lemire's Black Hammer universe.

Super Sons: Escape to Landis (Super Sons #3)
I get the impression that Ridley Pearson had already written this story before DC contacted him about writing a book for them and just shoe horned in Damian (I refuse to call him Ian) Wayne and Jon Kent.

Absolute Carnage: Immortal Hulk and Other Tales ★★★★
Some really great one-shots tangentially involved around a great event.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 11 Library Edition ★★★★
After a magical disaster, supernatural creatures are put in internment camps. It spoke a lot to the Trump era it was written in.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 12 Library Edition ★★★
This isn't really Buffy Season 12. Well, not just Buffy Season 12. Season 12 was only 4 issues. Also, included is Giles: Girl Blue and that book is trash.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel: Hellmouth ★★
Buffy and Angel walk through the Hellmouth for 4 issues before the Scooby gang shows up to save the day.

Angel Vol. 2 ★★★★
What the rest of the Angel characters are up to while Angel is stuck in the Hellmouth.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Vol. 3: From Beneath You ★★
This series headed downhill quickly. When did David Lopez start drawing everyone to look like Momo?

X-Men by Jonathan Hickman, Vol. 2 ★★★★
Hickman continues to make the X-Men interesting once more.

Excalibur by Tini Howard, Vol. 2 ★★
This story (if you can even call it a story) is all over the place. Now that Fallen Angels is no more this book wins for shittiest X-book.

Marauders by Gerry Duggan, Vol. 2 ★★★★★
At times, this is even better than Hickman's X-Men.

Captain Marvel, Vol. 3: The Last Avenger ★★★★
Captain Marvel is picking off the Avengers one by one. But why?

Empyre: X-Men ★★★
It's (alien) plants vs. (mutant) zombies with the X-Men stuck in the middle when the Cotati invade Genosha.

Crossover #1 ★★★★
What happens when a mega comic book event crossover manifests in our universe?

Icon, Vol. 1: A Hero's Welcome/a> ★★★★
What is Superman was black and grew up in a slave plantation, surviving until modern times? It's amazing how this book is just as relevant today as it was in 1993 when it was first released.

The Harrowing of Hell ★★★
Jesus's descent into Hell after his crucifixion. The art is striking.

Legends of Red Sonja ★★★★
Gail Simone has gathered some of the top female fantasy and comic book authors in the business to write a Red Sonja story.

Noir: The Mohawk Templar ★★★
The title's a bit of a misnomer as this is more a old time movie serial than noir.

House of Whispers Vol. 3: Watching the Watchers
The real question here is how this snoozefest of a series made it 22 issues.
Nov 11, 2020 12:36PM
