Thanks to everyone who made these great suggestions this month. This topic is now closed, but you can cast your vote in our polls here: https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/1...
Author herself mentions that assuming heavy symbolism, you could say "the 500" is simply the power to contemplate, and the "lock on a door" is the power to think for oneself. I can get behind that. Are women further ahead now than in 1928? Well, JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter while sitting in a coffee shop. No income and no room of her own. Maybe not.
I'll be chiming in on this one too. I expect the prose to be beautiful, as Virginia Woolf is known for her eloquence. She said that "books are the mirrors of the soul". Quite right.
Andi wrote: "I nominate The Shining by Stephen King, 1977, 659 pages."Andi, The Shining was read by this group in 2017, so would be best nominated in the Catch-up topic. Is there another modern book you would like to suggest?
I nominate The Time Traveller's Wife, 518 pages.I also second Wolf Hall, The Husband's Secret and The Shipping News.
This is the Pre-Read thread for the August 2022 Modern selection. This month we will be reading Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.
Who's planning to join in on this read? Why did you choose this particular book? Any expectations?
