189072 To answer the question on "buddy reads", we've done it once as a group in December when we added a short story (we read The Gift of the Magi) because of its holiday theme.
We've also considered adding longer books over a 2-3 month period on the side for those interested, outside of the monthly books. Hasn't happened yet.

Long story short (pun somewhat intended), currently there is no formal process for adding "buddy reads" or third books in a given month. Depending on how polls shake out, and if we extend the polls and there still isn't a clear winner, maybe we can vote to decide to add a 3rd book for the month. Given the amount of new members, sounds like it would be of interest to a lot of people!

Originally, when the group only had about 200 members, chose 5% (aka 10 members) as the appropriate "interest level" to add a third book. Can do this again? Let me know what you think.

189072 I was torn on this. Parts really dragged for me, and I skimmed the entire discussion with the other French castaway.

Agree with Lorilee that this was a mediocre book for me until the end. The ending felt like a weird dichotomy... I immediately deflated upon learning that the entire thing probably wasn't true, just an illusion or coping mechanism or what have you. But then, maybe it was, or even more... it doesn't really matter, does it?

I saw the movie years ago when it came out and can't believe I didn't fully remember the ending. In some ways, I'm glad I saw the movie first as there were some beautiful scenes of sunsets, water life, the island, etc. that I felt the descriptions in the book fell short of as compared to the visual effects of the movie.

189072 I think that reading it for an assignment would take away some of the impact for sure, especially the ending. I still feel residual emotion thinking about (view spoiler) If I had to dissect every little thing about Randle and the Nurse's behaviors etc. leading up to it, I feel like it would have lost it's power.

189072 I LOVED the Hunger Games series. I read all 3 in two days I think.

189072 Thanks, Brady! applying for an MBA... but did it round 3 so pretty difficult. When I very likely don't get in, will be expanding to doctorate programs in engineering as well likely.

And Athletic Administration sounds great! Kind of wish I went into sports medicine after working with trainers so much in college, or anything sports related really.

Ben - good luck in Germany! Sounds like it will be an adventure you'll have to keep us all updated.

189072 Welcome, Deci and Innastholiel!

Eric - we do not meet in person, we discuss all books through threads online (see the Discussion Folder for all of the book club discussion threads).
As for the month's books, they are listed on the homepage. Your discretion as to how you access them - library, buy online (Goodreads is linked to Amazon and you can buy there), borrow from a friend, etc. Sometimes the older books are free through electronic book formats such as Kindle or EPUB and other members may post links in the group.

189072 Alexandra I was the SAME WAY avoided reading for pretty much 5ish years because of high school english class assignments. No better way to ruin a book than having to write a book report.
