I would second Animal Farm by George Orwell. Orwell is a fascinating writer, forces you to think. Interesting observations of human behavior. One of my favorite books.I you want something more light-hearted fun but with a powerful message, would suggest A Christmas Carol by Dickens but that's more seasonal...
I have a hard time getting started, too, mostly because I have to get used to the language most classics are written in. Once I get into it, though, I feel like I get momentum and whip through to the end.
