Darryl Crapstock: One of Lucas Davenport's investigators.
Ginger Childs: Layton Burns, Jr.'s girlfriend who went parking with him and observed a terrible smell. A policeman was asked to check it out and found it was from decaying bodies.
Virgil Flowers: Investigator who works for Lucas. He has his own series of books
Heather Jorgenson: A waitress at Auntie's Diner who is abducted but manages to escape from her captors. It seems that she is the only person to have escaped from the Black Hole killers.
Randy Lipsky: Police officer who is a friend of Layton Burns, Jr. and is asked to accompany Burns to a scene where there is a terrible smell. They discover that it is the odor of decaying bodies.
Mary Lynn Carpenter: One of the bodies discovered at the mass grave in Red Wing, Minnesota. She's the last of the murder victims and comes from Duran, a small town.
Henry Sands: Director of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Lucas's boss. Running the investigation.
Beatrice Sawyer: Criminal investigator who is at the crime scene. She is the head of the crime scene group.
Layton Burns Jr.: A high school boy who was parking with his girlfriend when they smelled a terrible odor. Layton asks a policeman friend to check it out and they find the odor was from dead bodies that were hidden in a cistern.
Bob Shaffer: Davenport is told that Bob Shaffer will be running the investigation, the investigation is called the Black Hole Case.
Sandy Rodriguez: A police officer under Bob Shaffer who is running the investigation
John Sanchez: A police investigator who works under Bob Shaffer.
Mr. Bryan: A man who had a Ponzi scheme and was under investigation. Then his car was found with blood on the driver's seat. Davenport's investigators are working on this case.
Don Buford: A BCA investigator. (Bureau of Criminal Apprehension). He works under Lucas Davenport
Larry Hopping Crow: A Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator who is at the crime scene.
Janice Williams: A college student who disappeared eight years ago. She is the second victim identified at the crime scene. A student at Dakota Technical College.
James Boll "Jimmy": From Wisconsin, Wisconsin's Division of Criminal Investigation. He's investigating the Carpenter murder.
Sally James: She has the nearest farm to the crime scene. Police question her about the former owner of the land where the cistern is located. She had inherited the farm from her father.
Jenkins: A police investigator under Lucas Davenport's unit of Bureau of Criminal Investigation. He was investigating the death or disappearance of Bryan.
Catrin Mattsson: A deputy who is very territorial and tells the BCA agents that she wants copies of all reports since the crime occurred in her district. She's the lead investigator in the area where the crime scene is found.
Ralph Bellman: A police officer in the Anaconda, P.D. He investigated a number of break-ins at grave sites and Davenport wants to question him to see if there could be any connection to the murders.
Carrie Lee Pitt: Bryan's girlfriend. His last known lover, a blond with a Missouri accent.
Shrake: One of the investigators in Lucas Davenport's division of Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, currently investigating the disappearance and possible death of Bryan.
Case: A senior who is selling weapons with his wife. Lucas team is tracking the Case's and their partners, the Waters.
Emmanuel Kent: The brother of Doyle Kent, a bank robber. Doyle robbed a Wells Fargo Branch and was killed by Woodbury cops. The week later, Emmanuel started bragging that he was going to kill Lucas and Jenkins. As a schizophrenic, no arrest was made but more psychiatric tests were made.
Doyle Kent: Emmanuel Kent, a bank robber who was shot and killed by Woodbury Cops.
Inga Blume Bryan: Former wife of Bryan, the Ponzi guy, shot him in the groin when he entered her home without telling her and she shot him as an intruder.
Roger Axel: Kidnapper, murderer. He's Horn's partner in crime.
Jack L. Horn: Kidnapper, murderer, Roger Axel's partner in crime.
June Shaffer: Wife of Bob Shaffer who worked under Lucas Davenport and was a lead investigator in the murder investigation which Davenport's unit calls the Black Hole Case.
Leon Murphy: He and his brother Joe operate a funeral home and help investigators in looking at grave robbers who might be connected with the murder.
Joe Murphy: Owns a funeral home with his brother and help investigators in the Black Hole Case when they were seeing if there had been graves that were robbed and if they might connect with the investigation
Letty: Lucas's adopted daughter. She is experienced in investigations and Lucas thinks she might be heading toward a career as a state trooper.
Weather: Lucas Davenport's wife. She is a surgeon.
Robert Gibbons: Funeral home operator in Holbein where one of the investigators had questioned him just prior to the investigator's murder.
Neil Parsons: The last owner of the funeral home in Holbein where one of the investigators spoke to the current owner about crimes in the Holbein cemetery. Parsons couldn't help since he is deceased.
Cathy Irwin: A woman in Holbein who called investigators when she learned one of the officers was murdered the day before. She told the investigators that she had spoken to the murdered investigator the prior day and he asked for directions for a place in Holbein.
Kaylee Scott: A young girl who tells investigators that when her family was driving down a country road, she may have seen the man who is a suspect in the murder of a police officer.
Mark Sprick: Mail carrier who was seen in the area where a police investigator was murdered.
Andi Sprick: Ex-wife of the mail carrier Mark Strick. She is interviewed by the police about her husband.
Tom Greenhouse: A police investigator who is working with Sheriff Mattsson and working on the case of the murdered police investigator.
Cindy Tucker: A young woman who was working for Mary Lynn Carpenter at a candy store. Later, she bought the store from Mary Lynn's parents.
Chief Carr: Chief of police in Duran, the town Mary Lynn Carpenter was from.
Clark Carpenter: Mary Lynn Carpenter's father.
Sandra Carpenter: Mary Lynn Carpenter's mother.
Janet Frost: A newspaper reporter who writes a critical article about Lucas Davenport and a criminal who was killed in a bank robbery. She also writes another story about Lucas but her newspaper "The Star Tribune" received many complaints and there were no followups.
Luther Jorgenson: A relationship to Heather Jorgensen and talked about her case to other town acquaintences.
Toby: A man who deals in illegal snake farms, the skins went to Europe. He also sold illegal gall bladder from animals, these gall bladder would be sold to a Chinese businessman where the gall bladder would sell for thousands of dollars.
Carol Scott: Kaylee Scott's mother.
Reggie Scott: Kaylee Scott's father.
Jane Windrew: A young girl who is a friend of Kaylee Scott and confirms the identity of a man who Kaylee thinks is the suspect the police are looking for.
Blair Tucker: A man one of Lucas's confidential informants thinks might be someone who associated with Horn.
Marge Windrew: Jane Windrew's mother.
Duane Cornwall: A friend of a man named Toby who is an informant of Lucas. Cornwall was arrested in Canada for killing a bear and being found with drugs.
Dan Weil: A man who one of Lucas's confidential informants says could be someone associated with Horn. Matteson says he's an over the top gun nut.
Andy O'Neill: A man who ran the local carpet store came in to R.A.'s hardware store. He stares at R.A. and tells him he looks like the picture of a suspect in the Black Hole Killings.
