185 This may be a long shot, but could it be the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell? The first book is called "Postmortem."

185 The killer Wore Leather by Laura Antoniou is great.
185 None that seemed familiar. Thank you for the list, though.
185 I checked this out from the library. I think the cover was white with abstract colors on it? Or with purple on it? This may have been a paperback.

The girl's name might be Randy, or someone in the book has that name. Her mom's love interest had a name who started with R, I think. They lived in a trailer. The mom sewed a lot of prom and wedding dresses, and they lived in a trailer. "Future with a fitting!" was a sign on their house for business. The mom respected her daughter and looked out for her. A woman went to get her future read, but the mom reminded her it was "with a fitting." and she had to try on a dress first. The woman put on the dress for two seconds, yanked it off, crumpled it to the floor, and rushed over to the teenager for a psychic reading. The daughter responded to the disrespect with a fake and nasty reading, and the woman cried. I smiled.

The psychic teen learned to give fake psychic readings, but still had psychic visions. She was glad to be helping her mom out, but hadn't realized how exhausting it could be. Her mom was in a love triangle, and one of the men was named Kevin? The teen tried to have a vision about who the mom would wind up with, and blurted out "Chocolate pie" while coming out of the trance. Her mom had baked a chocolate pie while waiting for her daughter's vision, and they ate the pie happily afterward.

The ending was...calm. Everything had calmed down. It didn't exactly feel like a HEA but kind of was. Maybe it had mystery and romantic elements? I think the psychic teen had a boyfriend or a crush on a guy at school. Most of all, I remember how close mother and daughter were, and how they looked out for one another.

I'll comment if I remember anything else.

185 Bargle, thank you for posting the threads that are offered on those sites! I was worrying about that last night, as I'm working on setting up a LibraryThing for myself in the coming week. This topic is so helpful and I'm glad it was put up. Thank you to everyone.
185 This might be a long shot, but could it be "Z? the Director's Cut of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac" by Jhonen Vasquez?
185 I think he was solo, no partner on the force. I could be wrong. The sister wasn't connected to the crime. The parents were long dead, and the detective felt like he had to take care of his sister. She was the older sibling, but they were super close in age.

185 This might be a long shot, but "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" by Jenny Trout.
185 "A Time For Dancing" by Davida Wills Hurwin. Edited to correct typo.
185 Yes! Thank you.
185 SPOILERS. tw: death of family pet; vehicular homicide; poisoning

The main character's best friend was Jan. They both drank out of the same bottle of Evian every day. They came across a substance that revived the dead and made them invincible. I can't remember how they got the substance. Science class maybe? I think it was a liquid, and was definitely liquid soluble. The main character's pet dog, Fletcher? Flanders? was dying and he drank some of the substance. He died, but came back to life and tried to attack his family. His rage killed him forever. He was frothing and growling and had never done that before.

Jan and her friend had an enemy at school, Cindi. She drank some of the substance. They went on a school trip and tried to kill her out of fear. Specifically, they ran her over with a car. "Floor it, Jan!" the MC yelled. Cindi appeared to die and they were relieved. They got on the bus back to school, but Mrs. someone said, "I can't leave until everyone is here. Cindi is missing." Cindi walked onto the bus, back to life, and grinned and sat down next to the girls. They later caused her to fly into a rage, which killed her. As she was dying, she screamed that she hated them, and then stopped because she was so tired.

They found a note from her saying she knew they slipped the substance to her, so "I put the rest into the safest place I could find: into your bottle of Evian." The girls drank the water before reading the note. The note ended with something cheery like, "See you soon!" indicating Cindi knew they would be invincible until they flew into rages that killed them.

EDIT: It was a paperback with a royal blue or lilac cover. I checked it out from a public library.
I'll comment if I remember anything else.

185 "The puppetmaster's apprentice" by Lisa DeSelm was good!
