You might want to click through to look at the books. Sometimes for reprintings books will have a different cover.

Kris, I think Allie was looking for the abridged/adapted version: Elsie's Endless Wait (sorry, I was on my phone before and couldn't add it)

You're welcome! It took me about 20 minutes to remember the name "Elsie Dinsmore" but I had a hunch that was what you were looking for. I haven't read them myself, but I've heard of them.
Maybe the Elsie Dinsmore series by Martha Finley? I believe they were abridged and reprinted in the early 2000s, which could be why they seemed new.

This is possibly a book called Tough-Luck Karen by Johanna Hurwitz. The "A-plot" of the story is about a girl who gets grounded from cooking after getting bad grades. One of the "B-plots" is her little brother choosing to do a history project on "John Dark" who turns out to be Jeanne d'Arc (the sister helps him with it).
