185 And Ingo, do not give up hope yet. It has taken up to seven (7!) years to have a book solved. Just bump it up whenever you want to, and more people will see it, and eventually someone HAS to know it!

Another moderator got it shelved and moved to the appropriate folder. Thanks!
185 Fool's Puzzle: female lay crime solver, boyfriend at beginning of series is chief of police; i don't recall her hair color.
Catering to Nobody: female lay crime solver, boyfriend is police officer; hair color is, I think, blonde, but may be red head
Thyme of Death: female lay crime solver; boyfriend is/was a police officer; I don't think China has red hair, but her best friend does.
Bootlegger's Daughter: female crime solver; may have redhair, boyfriend is police officer; she is a judge.

I hope these help.
185 I really enjoyed this series as a youngster. There were only two books then. I do agree that either The Diamond or The Swing is your book.
Be sure to let us know for sure which one it is! We crave closure!
185 Kate, let us know when you know for sure, or are closer to 100%. We don't shelve the book and mark it as Solved until we get that verification. Thanks! I hope you found your book!

185 Could it possibly be some picture book made based on the movie Watership Down, which is also, of course, derived from the book Watership Down? There are evil rabbits in the book. I'm visualizing a Disney version of the movie with the scary parts moderated for young readers.
185 Jane, please let us know if A Boat to Nowhere is your book or if you are still looking. We like to know for sure (or as sure as the OP is) before we mark a book as Solved. Thanks.
185 Added detail to header.

We still would like to know when you read the book. It helps us narrow down possible solutions, and may trigger someone's memory.
185 Ivy, will you let us know if Heir of Fire is the correct book, and we'll mark this as solved and shelve the book. Thanks!
185 Are you going to try to get a copy of one of the Anita Brookner books to verify? We'd love to know if you definitely identify a title so we can shelve the book and mark this thread as Solved. Thanks!
185 Jennifer, should we mark this book as Solved, or do you want to check it out first? Please let us know!
185 This sounds great, speaking as a former teacher. Was it hard-cover or paperback? I'll have to think on this...
185 I understand that feeling of having a book on the tip of my cerebral cortex...it just doesn't make it to the speech center.
You've given some good details.
Does the male protagonist have magic capabilities?
185 Katrine, please come back and tell us if you found your book or if you are still looking. We like verification before we mark a thread as Solved. We crave closure!
185 Carlene, can you add some more details. When did you read this? Or hear this? Where is it set? Can you give some details about the characters?
Thanks.
185 Melissa, I added the beginning of your details about the book as a way of letting people know a little about your book. If you want to change them, look at the group pointers/rules at the top of the group page, as Lobstergirl suggested. Good luck!
185 Laura, I added some specifics to your header. Edit them as you wish.
185 Maria, is Rosa's suggestion (message 2) your book. Please let us know one way or the other. We'll keep looking if it isn't, and if it is, we'll mark this as Solved. Thanks!
185 Angela, please let us know what the title is that you found. We need confirmation from you, the OP, before we mark this as Solved.
185 Rebecca, you don't have many details to go on here. Anything you can remember will help. I did add to your header to narrow it down a bit. Good luck!
