Meet Up - China (11 new)
Jun 19, 2016 05:33PM

179584 It's highly likely that I'll be back in Beijing by the end of the summer! If there's anybody there by then. well...just saying. :)
100,000 Members! (144 new)

Serious questions."

If it helps, yours truly hadn't even watched all films starred by Emma when I came here and wasn't even very aware of the He for She initiative when I first landed on the boards. The celeb status obviously helped, but more from a popping-in-my-Facebook-feed sort of way. ;) I had been reading a bit on feminism during last year, something was already prompting me to take it further and also, that particular day when I registered here I remember I was bored as hell and tangled in a big, dark web of sadz and feelings, haha.

I'm sure loads of people came here because of Emma...but to me that is a-ok. :) After all, it's like with books. Some people read just like they breath, some people got addicted to it because of that beach book or that bestseller. The result is the same, irregardless of the followed path.

Oh, and...134,498 members right now. This is huge, people. Can you imagine? Close your eyes and think of hitting 200k someday... :D
Introduction (1818 new)
Jun 19, 2016 05:23PM

179584 Every once in a while, I like to pop by here to take a look at our new members...

Fun fact! As of right now, we're 134,498 lovely, feminist souls here. Hear us roarrrrrr!!!!!!

More than yesterday, less than tomorrow, as we like to say around my neck of the woods. Like Katelyn said, welcome everybody!! Hope you have a grand time with us in the following months. To be honest, this works like a huge community where everybody has a voice and helps each other, but still, we the mods are here for any particular question that you may have. :) See you around!
Email Circle (26 new)
Jun 19, 2016 05:17PM

179584 I came here to check whether someone was giving their details publicly, but I'm happy to see we all know better. :D

By all means do create these circles...but don't leave us, alright? You heard me? ;)

Also, overwhelming because of how many people we are already? Or is there anything else making you feel like that? Don't get me wrong, I do not want to spoil the fun in this thread, it's more like a reminder that we mods (even those of us who have been a little more absent lately, boo) are here to make sure that the boards go smoothly. :) So, feel free to contact me (us!) if you feel there's any reason that is really disencouraging you to stay around here.

I'd say Kressel's thoughts were not strictly going in that direction, but it's still true that we do need to give each other the benefit of the doubt and that past actions can only be changed with our current and future ones. :)

Oh, and Kressel, I hadn't heard of that one, but if you shared it with us here, it most likely belongs to this thread. :) After all, as you said, it's not only and strictly about feminism. Female voices in and of themselves are already worth to hear.
Petitions (9 new)
Jun 19, 2016 05:07PM

179584 Hello, Sascha! Hmmm, I wonder if we did indeed have a thread for petitions? I seem to remember it used to be more like people creating random threads for separate causes, back in the beginning. Anyway, I've done a quick search and it didn't came up with any duplicate, so good thing you've created this thread.

Oh, and I added my name to the petition. I had some fun trying to make my way through the German website, haha, but donezo!! :)

I'm not really sure of what you mean here, Cem (could easily be because it's late here and I'm tired, haha). Care to explain again? :D

179584 Achyutta wrote: "Can we still make suggestions for the months following August/July? A Doll's House and Hedda Gabler were my first literary exposures to feminism and are certainly engaging to dissect!"

If I remember correctly, yes you can! The poll will be open until the last day of this month, I believe. :)

Oh, and just a quick reminder, although some of you are actually helping us detect duplicates (thank you, folks!)...before adding your suggestions to the poll, please make sure that they have not been added already! Not only for the sake of management, but also as a way to make sure that your suggestion gets all votes together. ;)
179584 Canada is really jumping on the equality bandwagon, right? Not only with small but meaningful gestures such as this one, but also with bigger things.
Jun 16, 2016 12:14PM

179584 Emma, that was such an interesting point. I think in this case it doesn't hurt their goals because at the end of the day they are indeed targeted towards women, but yeah, perhaps if we go back to the (endless!) feminism discussion it would be necessary to include men.
179584 Well now envy is making its way into my heart. That sign must be the funniest ever. :'D Is it a DIY or store-bought?
Jun 16, 2016 11:42AM

179584 Hi, Angelica! Well, it's easy to introduce me to new stuff in this field, but I certainly did not know about SI! According to their history, they even have consulting status 1 with the ECOSOC, IIRC? Lots of branches worldwide, too. Thanks for bringing them up here at OSS.

Hmmm. I think they are definitely feminists because of their scope, their target audience and activities. :) They may choose to identify themselves as such or perhaps like another word better, but I don't think it's that important. Actions matter more than words...at least here. :)

179584 The Victorian era, art and feminism? Well, I knew this thread would promptly pay off... :)
Why ness? (24 new)
Jun 15, 2016 04:56PM

179584 Well, and there's also the fact that the -ness suffix is also used for creating nouns, right? So that would also be sort of troublesome, I guess. At least it does sound kind of ambiguous / messy to me with some of the examples brought up here.

I often feel conflicted when it comes to the use of language and its change towards a more inclusive, non-sexist model. I am obviously interested in this topic, both as a woman and as a linguist myself...in fact, you don't even need to be a woman, just a reasonably aware, curious human bean. :) Then again, precisely because I am a linguist (translation!) I will readily admit that some of the latest non-sexist language suggestions have had me clutching my pearls because they sound terrible to my ears. I think it is way less used in English because you people have it easier to get away with this sort of changes but in Spanish, for example, we have the word 'todos' for 'all', changeable to 'todas' in the event that you are referring an all-females group. Well, some people like to use 'todxs' now, the 'x' being there for both men and women (well, and all other genders out there)...and I just cannot bring myself to even stop to dislike it. Just, ugly and weird. I do admit, however, that language is still soundly sexist and non-inclusive - I just wish we could find other ways to address this.

179584 I just want you to know that I'm laughing here, alone in my room, over the Home of Dude thing. LOL. I'm imagining it as a trademark and everything. Home of Dude, Inc. Or TM. :'D

Oh, but all of them interesting accouts are welcome! :) Besides, I am totally not celeb-savvy, so Amandla was a novelty for me. Get me further than Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga and I'll be a very confused girl, haha. Oh, dear.

Gotta watch the cornrows video! It was only recently that I read for the first time about hair and the huge cultural and identity significance linked to it and ever since I've wondered how is it that so many pretty obvious issues are just not noticed by the average person when it's clear that they're there, they've got a meaning, they exist.

Not at all irrelevant to talk here about the utterly shitty week in Orlando. What the hell? I sadly knew nothing of Christina Grimmie until her murder, but it's just crazy to think about it. She hurt nobody, she was there trying to make music happen for her, and then this sorry excuse of a human being came and took her life. Then again, their family, friends and fans had barely had time to mourn here before the hate crime at Pulse shook everybody in the same city.

Sometimes it's hard to keep faith in mankind. All this hatred, tragedy and nonsense. All this heartbreak and blatant injustice. I don't even know how we've managed to survive all these years on earth.

Aw, thanks! I did have a nice weekend before and after the crappy exam that had me travelling. It sure is hot in Madrid right now! But I lurrrrve it.

Oh, wow, I did not know about the BBC Women's Hour, why? Haha, adding them to my ever-growing list now. As for the Harry Potter themed one, needless to say, I'm gonna give it a go tomorrow. Yay. Diehard HP fan here.

I also remembered 'Call Your Girlfriend'. It's been a while since I last listened to it but I'd also add it to the list.
