This is the folder for discussions about books from the different genres in the challenge. Topics are in a different folder to make it easier to find everything. There will be a discussion thread for each category, so please post your books there rather than starting a new discussion.
Thanks!
This is the folder for the categories having to do with people and the things they do. Fiction and non-fiction books are welcome in any category. There will be a discussion thread for each category, so please post your books there rather than starting a new discussion.
Thanks!
This is the folder for discussions about books that fall into the different time periods. They can be either published during that time, or about that time period - it's up to you! There will be a discussion thread for each category, so please post your books there rather than starting a new discussion.
Thanks!
Update:Goodreads only allows 100 folders, so I am deleting folders from the 2015 challenge.
The discussion topics are not deleted, but are put into the "general" folder. I'll move them into a new folder that houses all of the 2015 challenge discussions, but that won't happen until after the 2017 challenge is completely set up.
In the meantime, you can click on the little arrow to collapse the "General" folder.
Kathy wrote: "I'm just going to read the books from my extensive reading list. Hope that's okay! :)"Absolutely! I think a lot of us read what we want, then see where it fits in the list.
Martha wrote: "I googled 2017 Reading Challenge Goodreads and this is what I got. I just thought that they had changed it. One would think that you could sign up for the official reading challenge before midnight..."I was finally able to sign up for the official challenge a short time before midnight. I'm not sure why they make you wait so long.
Welcome to our challenge group!
Hello everyone! There seems to be some confusion - I'm seeing a lot of questions about the challenge that appear to refer to the official Goodreads challenge, where you state how many books you want to read and as the year goes on you can see if you're behind or ahead, etc.
Once your time zone hits midnight, you should be able to see the official 2017 challenge.
This is a group is a home-grown challenge that started two years ago as the Pop Sugar challenge, but has morphed a bit each year.
All are welcome to play along!
But we have nothing to do with the official challenge.
Laura wrote: "Has the challenge changed? I"m looking for the place to set my goal with the icon as in year's past. Please let me know"Are you talking about the Goodreads official challenge? I don't think you can do that until January 1st.
Linda wrote: "My goal is 20 books. I was looking for the challenge that we had in 2016 where we could put what books we want to read and completed. Will that template be coming out."Because the list is so long and people are approaching the challenge differently, I thought that each of us could create our own template here. It looks like several people have pulled the categories they want to read and started their list. Some of us might be doing it more hit or miss - I plan to add the categories as I go because I'm not sure which ones I'll end up reading!
I hope this helps.
Happy New Year!I'm glad that so many of you are happy with the list. It's great to hear how each of you are tailoring the challenge to meet your own needs. I'm already thinking of books I have here at home that I'll be reading in the first days of 2017, and how they'll fit into the list.
Cheers!

Fair enough. :-)
It's been a crappy year. Especially the last couple of weeks. Not that other people haven't had a crappy year either... I'm just short on everything at the moment.
I appreciate your opinion, and I also believe that anybody can take the categories and make of them what they will. An easy challenge or a difficult challenge. Everybody approaches it a bit differently.
Chris wrote: "Sorry but this seems a bit complicated and really not a challenge at all. It's almost like asking you to read any book you want. Where's the challenge in that?I appreciate you have put time and e..."
You're welcome to join a different challenge group. There are plenty out there and I'm sure there's another that would better suit your needs.
Part of the fun of this group is that it's low pressure. Over the last two years I noticed that there were particular frustrations about certain categories and people's inability to finish the challenge, which led to different levels and different approaches.
When I asked for volunteers to take over in August, only one person stepped up. It so happened that both she and I were very busy with personal things and unable to put in the hours of time it takes to organize the challenge.
Keep track of your reading progress here!Start a comment for yourself, and edit the comment to add each book and category as you finish. Similar to the 2016 template, but there is not master template because everyone will be reading a different combination of categories.
Example:
- A classic
- A graphic noveletc. etc.
DON'T GIVE UP!I just posted the challenge for 2017. Thanks so much for your patience. This year has been, well... 2016.

Don't give up on us yet! The last few weeks have been a bit sucky, but I appreciate that everybody really wants the challenge to go on. With that in mind, here is the plan for 2017:Challenge levels - 25, 50 and 50+ books, you choose which one is for you along with the categories you want from a list of over 100 categories. No wild cards.
I was thinking to limit the list to 100 categories, but there are have been so many great suggestions (and I'm sorry if I've missed yours, I will probably add a few more in the early days as I go back over the suggestions). I believe that that goal in these reading challenges is to read "outside the box" and that's different for all of us. For some of us, we're trying to read books about topics or in genres we wouldn't normally read. Others of us may be going for the number of books read, but still want to vary what we read. The following list should meet the needs of everyone, and still allow us to ignore the categories we really hate! Haha. My hope is that you all continue to have fun and find your personal success with the challenge.
Here then is a rather long list of categories. I can't promise that there aren't duplicates that I've missed, or that some categories might seem exactly like others. Let me know if you catch something egregious (or just pretend you didn't notice). There should be a bit of something for everyone here!
