This book deals with the trial. There were two points that really struck me. In a modern criminal investigation, the time of death of the victim is a crucial piece of evidence. Here, I couldn't find a single place where Fyodor's time of death was established. The other was the absence of resorting to fingerprints. As to the former, I don't know whether it was considered as an important piece of evidence at that time in Russia, or in the world for that matter. As to the latter, I found that at the time this novel was written, no such procedure was adopted in the world. I could not help feeling that a lot of miscarriages of justice must have happened and that many innocents may have been convicted as was the case here.
